Question #5: Is there a connection between the Bible and Halloween?

Your answer?...
lol.
Yes, it's called All Saint's Day.
https://orthodoxwiki.org/Halloween

But this is the wrong question. :D
The right question is: Why do some Christians have problems with certain actions?
Well, it's because we all have strengths and weaknesses (myself included).
So, for some, a Halloween party may be very bad for them for many reasons i can't think of.
Some have problems with music.
Some have problems with movies.
Some have problems with alcohol.
Some have problems with porn.
Some have problems with money and gambling.
I mean the list is endless because there are a variety of things we can become a slave of in this fallen world (myself included).

So, when you know your weakness, then avoid your weakness. That's your first defense.
Then if you're caught in the middle of the weakness or habit, pray and ask others to help you too, if you have people to help.
Learn from your mistakes and don't repeat it again.
That's all we can do and keep trying because we're not perfect.

As far as Halloween is concerned for me it seems like a stupid holiday because i wasn't even born in US, but i did take my kids out when they were little for candy with their friends, because i wanted them to have a normal childhood and have fun with their friends.
Now that they're teenagers, they can't stand Halloween either like their old man.

The Bible speaks of "wisdom from above" as a standard of reason for the sons of God. So, I will employ what I have gained from my connection with God to answer your questions. I won't have room to unpack everything but I invite further discussion. ("And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. And when there had been much debate...")

Is God free?

Since God is all-powerful, power cannot be used to understand His nature. His will will always be done. However, He limits Himself in this manner: God is love and truth. Since He has decided to be known by love and truth then love and truth constrains His will. He decided this as it is His prerogative to do so.

If God is constrained in any way it is because He decided to be so. And, because of His eternal nature, He is not free to vacillate between positions that change His character. He is. And He has not changed. Now, His positions might change on a number of things but no position will change His character. He cannot be "good" and then "evil" from an eternal p.o.v.

In short, no, God is not free. He is constrained by love and truth. As a son of God grows in wisdom and maturity he becomes less free, as well.

Can God be evil?

Only from man's point of view.

Is the Father able to change His will?

Yes, as long as He remains in love and truth. He limited Himself in this way.

Is God the Son free to sin?

If you mean Jesus, yes. Like Adam he was free to sin. But, unlike Adam He did not sin. If He had then He would not have become The Christ with all authority in heaven and on earth. There is no sin in Him and there never will be.

Could the Holy Spirit become demonic?

A fallen angel and the Holy Spirit are two different beings. Only fallen angels are demonic. And, because the Holy Spirit shares the same nature as God (love and truth) He cannot be evil or take part in evil.
I agree that God limited Himself to being love and truth, so although He could choose not to limit Himself in this way, He promises that He never will (ML 3:6), and we trust His Word. In this regard we must seek to understand RM 9:18f. juxtaposed with 1TM 2:3-4.
The passage begins by saying, "God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden." And the second passage starts off with "God our Savior wants all men to be saved...". The harmonization seems to be that although God determines what is right and could decide to harden and condemn whom He pleases, He decided to save everyone who exercises their free will by choosing to seek and please Him.

Yes, Jesus being incarnate Immanuel was free to sin but did not, which qualified him to atone for the sins of humanity per HB 2:14-18 as the unblemished Lamb, thereby fulfilling and ending the Mosaic sacrificial law.

I agree that the Holy Spirit is not described as a separate being such as an angel, but rather as God Himself, so what is true of the Father applies to His Holy Spirit.

Yes, some denominations relate Halloween to All Saints Day, but that is not the zeitgeist.
And yes, Halloween becomes problematic/sinful when it moves beyond innocent children playing trick or treat for candy and becomes an excuse for adolescents and adults doing or portraying evil, such as witchcraft.

Your (Scripture-referenced hopefully) answer?...
All we have to do is use a concordance to come up with the answer to this question.

My NIV lists these verses in the OT: 1SM 2:9, PS 16:3, 30:4, etc., DN 7:18.

Relevant NT verses include: RM 8:27, 1CR 6:2, EPH 1:15&18 (cf. 6:18), PHM v. 7, and RV 5:8 & 19:8.

What do these teach is GRFS?

You're okay. But I doubt I can teach you much about this. No worries. Carry on brother.
I have been carrying on on other threads, but I'm baaack and want to revisit what you said, sibling:

1. "The Bible is not a moral book. It is spiritual and to be understood spiritually.": The Bible contains BOTH moral instructions AND spiritual truth, nicht wahr?

2. "That means without the Spirit of God in a man, that man cannot understand what God is saying through the scriptures." Because man is made in God's image we are able to understand much truth beginning with His command not to eat forbidden fruit and including our need for salvation via right reasoning and God's requirement for salvation via learning Scripture. Then, after accepting Christ and receiving God's loving Holy Spirit we are able/have power to cooperate with His will/manifest the fruit of the Spirit, especially by loving everyone including enemies.

3. "To treat it as a moral book would be to make it another Law of Sinai where the people, because they did not know God, would follow the text thinking they, through it, obtain a superior position in the earth. Such reasoning keeps men in darkness." True, but that involves MIStreating God's Word/law, even though they may have known God to the extent He revealed Himself pre-NT, which I view as the 5 talents in the parable of Jesus.

This random question was raised on another thread, and I thought it might properly be discussed here if anyone finds it as interesting as I do: What does the absence of clear and concise pronouncements by Scripture on various issues such as abortion, war and whether the Sabbath law is part of the New Covenant indicate?

Scriptural silence on some issues indicates one of three things:

1. The practice was so uncommon that it was not mentioned, so we have to apply Scripture about other issues in order to arrive at the best opinion. For example, with regard to abortion we need to consider whether it is murder.

2. The practice was common but not mentioned, so we might assume it might be acceptable in some way that does not contradict the law of love. For example, war was common but nowhere does the Bible condemn being a soldier, so we must assume it might be acceptable as a means of resisting evil or enforcing peace.

3. The practice was common but not clearly defined, so we have freedom to observe it or amend it in accordance with NT teaching. For example, the Sabbath law was the fourth of the Ten Commandments, but unlike the moral commandments it was neither reaffirmed nor cancelled in the NT, although CL 2:16-17 indicates the "reality in Christ" is that we should serve the Lord every day, just as we should be continually prayerful, joyful and thankful (1THS 5:17, PHP 4:4-6).

The next topic in this alphabetical order is gambling.

The Bible does not teach about gambling or any recreational use of money directly, even though it was a common activity, so #1 above would not apply but which of the other two does?

Moving on from the question about gambling that prompted no comments, my next random question is this:

For what historical event do you wish we could have a mulligan?

Here is an example regarding the Korean War.

Mistake #1 – Withdrawing our troops from South Korea in 1948, which allowed the communist attack in June of 1950.

Mulligan #1 – Maintain sufficient troop levels, especially along the border, to deter an invasion and insure secure elections (as we did in Germany after winning WWII).

Mistake #2 – Allowing the Chinese to invade Korea in November of 1949 almost to Pusan.

Mulligan #2 – Command General MacArthur to defend Korea by surging overwhelming support along the northern border (which he had reached by November of 1950) and then to bomb invading Chinese troops as soon as they crossed, if they dared to do so (which they did in November of 1951).

Okay, so the mulligans are not specifically Bible-based but based on what I hope is right reasoning!

Your turn...

Question #1: Are there other earths with human life on them?

My answer: I doubt it, although I have seen people say there must be, because there are so many billions of suns in the universe, but I do not understand how one could arrive at an estimate of probability from a known case of only one--US!

Your answer?...
Heb 11:13 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

God is a Creator. Our world is probably the only fallen world, the rest of the worlds I am assuming passed the test unlike how our first parents failed in the garden.

Some people think this parable is referring to our world

Luke 15:4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

Hopefully we will find out soon enough.

The Sabbath is part of the NC for God's people So is abortion- thou shalt not murder. God wrote His law- which according to God His law includes all Ten Commandments Exo 34:28 Deut 4:13written personally by God- He called them collectively as "My commandments" Exo 20:6 You cannot separate one of these commandments from the other. Will there ever be a time we can worship other gods? If you answer no to this question, than the other 9 apply. The commandments came in a unit written on God's Authority which there is no greater

Which is why we see the Sabbath all throughout the NC as it didn't go anywhere for His faithful

Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Mark 2:27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. The Sabbath started at Creation where God made everything perfect. Exo 20:11 Man was made in the image, likeness of God to be followers of Him. God rested on the seventh day after He made man first because man will always need God's blessing Isa 56:1-6 and sanctification Eze 20:12 as man cannot sanctify ourselves, we need God for everything

Breaking one of the Ten Commandments we break them all as James said only quoting and contrasting from the Ten Commandments.
James 2:10 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Hebrew 4:4 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
Heb 4: 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”
Heb 4:9 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; The Greek word in this verse literally translates into Sabbath keeping, which remains for God's people, because God's people keep God's commandments- His version, not what was changed by man He warned us about Dan 7:25 that sadly most have followed. He warned us the whole world would be deceived. Meaning the majority

Jesus quoted OT so it applies in NT. God had a lot to say about the Sabbath, too many thus saith the Lords on His Sabbath that sadly people just gloss over.

Mat 4:4 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. God identified the Sabbath as His and called it My holy day, the holy day of the Lord. Never did He take that back

The Sabbath is meant to be a delight by having communion with God our Creator Isa 58:13-14 on the day He set aside from Creation Exo 20:11, made for man Mark 2:27 to bless and join ourselves with Christ Isa 56:1-6 and to sanctify us Eze 20:12 as we can’t sanctify ourselves, we need God for everything.

Happy Sabbath.

Dear S,

I know we have discussed this on another thread, but I am happy to do so again in order to see if we can come to an agreement better than not to agree.

GW - All of the laws you cited are affirmed in the NC specifically except for the Sabbath, although it was not cancelled either, but only amended to conform with the primary law of love that says we should serve God by doing good every day.

Happy Sabbath and every other day!

I see your words here, not God's. For me, I prefer to live by His Word- what Jesus told us to.

Exo 34:28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

Psa 89:34
My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.

Isaiah 56:1
56 Thus says the Lord:

6,“Also the sons of the foreigner
Who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him,
And to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant

Mat 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Has this been fulfilled yet?

Rev 1:7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

God only named one day, the seventh day Sabbath and called it My holy day, the holy day of the Lord. Isa 58:13 The Sabbath didn't change in the NC according to scripture, it is still according to the commandment Luke 23:56

Do we know better than He? Who said we can edit His Word that He spoke and He wrote with his own finger. Who has more Authority than God?

And I see YOUR words contradicting Christ's teaching to do good every day including the Sabbath in accordance with his NC: JN 13:34, "A New Command I give you: Love one another."

And he also taught (in MT 22:37-40) that the entire Law and Prophets are summarized or fulfilled by obeying the OC commands, "Love the Lord..." (DT 6:5) and "Love your neighbor as yourself" (LV 19:18).

Where did I ever state we should do good only on the Sabbath? So the accusation seems unfounded.

The Sabbath is not just about “doing good”. The Sabbath is about keeping the seventh day Sabbath holy Exo 20:8-11 a holy convocation Lev 23:3 the day to set aside all secular work and focus on Christ for one full day Isa 58:13 He knows we have to work to survive and pay bills and clean house etc . And why He gives us 6 days to do those things Exo 20:9 and only asks for one day back and He was very specific Exo 20:10. We should worship God 365 24/7 but that still doesn’t mean we should not negate our moral obligation to obey God’s commandments. Jesus related our obedience to God’s commandments as true or false worship Mat 15:3-14

The argument with the Pharisees they were accusing Jesus because He did good on the Sabbath by helping animals and people in need it was a sin. This is what Jesus was correcting, its not a sin to eat on the Sabbath, not a sin to help people who are in need or an animal stuck in a ditch, but Jesus main focus was going to the synagogues on the Sabbath sharing the Word of God Luke 4:16-30. He died for our sins (we too must die of self) and lived to be our example if we abide in Him 1 John 2:5-6 to follow in His footsteps 1 Peter 2:21-22

Jesus was not giving a “new command” and no scripture says new commands delete old commands. He was repeating the Old Deut 6:6 Lev 19:18 Testament and saying it in a new way in hopes people would understand and hear Him.

The commandment to love thy neighbor does not go undefined

Rom 13:9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” [b]“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Which set of law is Paul only quoting from to summarize the greatest commandment to love thy neighbor?

The Ten Commandments

The summary does not delete the details. Love to our fellow man is summarized in the last 6 commandments, love to God is summarized in the first 4 commandments which makes the greatest commandments to love God and love they neighbor the Royal Law- so the Royal law is the Ten Commandments summarized.

Its obvious or should be if the greatest commandment to love our neighbor come directly from the Ten Commandments on how we deal with our neighbor, the greatest commandment to love God with all thy heart, soul and mind would also come from this same unit of Ten on the commandments that deal with how we are to love Him Exo 20:3-11.

Jesus said:
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

So the whole bible hangs on the principles of the Ten Commandments- love to God, love to our fellow man. Love never went undefined

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome

If one was keeping the Ten Commandments the way Jesus taught us to Mat 5:19-30 everything God asks of us would be kept through love. Take the first commandment Exo 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. If one were keeping this very commandment, we would be keeping everything God's asks of us.

What seals God's Ten Commandments is the Sabbath. Without a seal, the law would mean nothing, it would be a set of laws that no one would know where they came from and who authorized it.

Right in the Sabbath commandment reveals God's seal.

Exo 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

The 3 elements of a seal

1. Name: Lord thy God.
2. Territory : Heaven and earth
3: Title: Creator

It’s why the devil has attacked the Sabbath so much and has tried counterfeiting everything God has made. Sadly, people prefer to throw out or edit the Ten Commandments, but no one can because no one is above God and He said He would not alter not even and dot of an i or cross of a t. No wonder why so many people try to tear down the Ten Commandments to mean less than how God intended, and then try to pretend it came from God, when God clearly said He would not alter His Words Psa 89:34. Whoever we obey is who we serve Rom 6:16 God only numbered one set of laws, He only personally wrote one set of laws, only one set of laws is inside the ark of the covenant, only one set of laws we will be Judged by, the law of Liberty James 2:10-12 Rev 22:14-15 The Ten are principles of the entire scriptures- love to God, love to our fellow man and should be kept through love and faith to God, our Creator of everything

What I need to have in order to make progress in this discussion is your line item of what is required in order to observe the Sabbath law. Thanks.

Question #1: Are there other earths with human life on them?

My answer: I doubt it, although I have seen people say there must be, because there are so many billions of suns in the universe, but I do not understand how one could arrive at an estimate of probability from a known case of only one--US!

Your answer?...
Speculation and there is no bible answer.
