Okay, I will see if it works well for me to intersperse my comments with yours. I begin at the beginning, and I will put my comments regarding what you said in brackets [ ]:

GN 1:1-3.God created the heavens and the earth” by saying “Let there be…”, so the supernatural world manifests the Word of God in an impersonal way. As Paul teaches in RM 1:20, “Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” And John says in JN 1:14, “The Word became flesh [human] and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Gen 1:7-8 - There is water in Heaven (did not see where it states that there is dry land in Heaven which would make sense for what is described in Revelation) [I wonder if "light" in v.3 represents energy, and "water" in v.7 represents matter.]

Gen 1:26-27 - For those who have heard of "world mission society church of god" - they use these verses as evidence that there is a "god the mother." Verse 27- "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" -KJV. A semi colon was used in the sentence which separates independent clauses. It states that God created him (male) in his own image and God created male and female (them).

GN 1:27. God created man in his own image, male and female. Here we have the equality of the sexes expressed 3,000 years ago, because the word “image” obviously refers to God’s personality rather than to sexuality. Essential equality is confirmed in GN 2:22 by Eve’s creation from Adam’s rib or side to be his partner rather than from his foot to be his slave.

Although all of Jesus’ twelve apostles were male, many of his disciples were female, and Paul writes (in GL 3:38), “There is neither… male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” In EPH 5:21, Paul added “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Current scientific theory based on genetic research is that humanity descended from one couple in Africa about 50,000 years ago, which is compatible with the biblical story of Adam and Eve, which has two accounts, neither of which is meant to be scientific or historical (explaining how and when), but rather theological and moral (God is Creator and people are sinners).

Gen 1:29-30 - Green herbs and fruit of a tree yielding a seed was given as good to eat. With vegan and carnivore being mainstream this was interesting to note since many claim one is superior to the other. Later on eating of animals is permitted. [While I can see that it would be better not to need meat in our diet, I am glad the Lord permits it for this earth, and I hope animals are raised nicely and killed as painlessly as possible.]

Gen 2:9 - God grew the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. I have not heard much or read yet about the tree of life. [It will be encountered again at the end of our reading project in RV 2:7, 22:2,14&19, so it must represent Christ (JN 14:6)]

Gen 2:11-14 - Have not found a map that shows all four rivers Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel, and Euphrates. From an internet search it is unknown where the garden of Eden was. [That is correct. If it was a physical garden, it is reasonable to think it would be in Mesopotamia. The NIV has Tigris instead of Kiddekel.]

GN 2:24. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” indicates that marriage is a spiritual union of one man and one wife, not merely a ceremony or legal contract. Jesus quoted this verse and added “So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (MT 19:4-6)

The only relationship in which sexual intercourse is appropriate or moral is marriage; extramarital sex is the sin of fornication, which is akin to the sin of pornography (cf. GL 5:19, RM 1:27). Also, because divorce is wrong, the only moral option for a married couple is to work to be happy rather than be miserable and become spiritually divorced, and if happiness is not achieved, it would have been better not to marry (cf. MT 19:8-10).

GN 3:4. The serpent contradicted God and thereby tempted Adam and Eve to commit the first sin. In GN 2:17, God had told Adam and Eve they would die if they ate fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but the serpent introduced the option of ungodliness or functional atheism, which they chose.

The first or original sin was not eating physical fruit, but rather choosing not to doubt the Devil, not to cooperate with God, and not asking God why the serpent contradicted what He had told them (MT 7:7). (It is wise to question God.)

GN 3:7-13. Adam and Eve tried to cover up their crime, refusing to accept responsibility for their mistakes. They should have confessed immediately (1JN 1:9). Instead their ungodly attitude was manifested by a chain of sins, including their silly attempt to hide from God and to blame someone else and very likely “dysfunctional” parenting that probably contributed to the emotional disturbance (anger) in Cain that resulted in the murder of Abel and so on and so forth through the millenniums.

Gen 3:16 - Because of Eve's sin, God cursed woman in childbearing and for the husband to rule over her. It seems well known that women were cursed with pain during childbirth. Was not aware it was a curse for the husband to rule over women. [Yes, instead of being equal, women throughout history have been second class status.]

Gen 3:22-24 - Tree of life is mentioned again with mystery around it. [Yes, see above.]

Gen 4:8 - Cain and Abel were Adam and Eve's sons. Cain slew Abel. [Yes, hate and murder ensue from disrespecting God's Word. As Jesus says in JN 8:44a, "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning..."]

Gen 4:15 - The Lord set a mark on Cain for him to be killed for what he did to Abel [so that he would NOT be killed,]

Gen 4:25 - God had favor for Seth as he did Abel [Yes, through whose lineage Messiah would be provided to atone for the sins of humanity]

Gen 5:5 - Adam lived 930 years [due to an unpolluted environment?]

Gen 5:18 - Son Jared from Seth's lineage had a son named Enoch as did Cain son of Adam. Gen 5:24 - "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not: for God took him." - this was Enoch from Seth's lineage the son who God favored. [Yes, we can wonder if this foreshadows the Rapture.]

Gen 5:29 - Noah is from Seth's lineage [Yes, another righteous man in the heritage of Christ.]

Please continue going first unless someone else wants to join us and take the lead.

NOTE: My Reply was too long ("more than 1,000 words" ?), so I cut our your part between the Quotes since I have copied it in my Reply. We will see if it works this time.
I'm replying in order of your comments - hope it's easy to follow

Yes, the first few verses on creation is fascinating

In regard to Gen 1:27, I will have to respectfully disagree. The definition of "image" - visual representation of something. God made Adam in His own image. Visually Adam resembles God. There are clear visual distinctions between man and woman. Eve being created from Adam's rib does not state she is Adam's equal in the Bible. God created Eve as a help meet to Eve. God created the animals first because Adam was lonely. God never referred to Eve by her name only wife. Adam named Eve as they were to leave the Garden of Eden. I focused in detail on these things because of a religious group claiming there is a "god the mother"

Regarding Paul saying male and female are one in Christ, that is great news! I am making comments for where I am presently in the Bible. As mentioned before, the importance of the distinction between man and woman in Gen 1:27 is important because of a religious group claiming there is a "god the mother"

Wow you really keep up with the science! Do you use mainly one source for science news or do you look at a lot of different sources?

Very interested in learning more about the tree of life. Surprised I haven't heard more about it.

Yes, I saw the maps that it would be around that area

Gen 2:24 I agree

I really can't comment on divorce since I haven't read the whole Bible. Divorce hasn't come up yet.

Gen 3:7-13 - I didn't see it as them "covering up" their crime, maybe refuse to take responsibility. They both spoke the truth. Eve gave Adam the fruit. The snake did deceive Eve. Adam was punished. Eve was punished more harshly because she gave Adam the fruit. The snake was punished most harshly for deceiving Eve. We won't know exactly what led Cain to do what he did to Abel since it wasn't stated in the Bible. Once sin was in the world it led man to do horrible acts without the spirit of God. There is no telling what the cause of a man's act is when there is sin in him. We didn't have a chance at salvation until Jesus Christ died for our sins.

Gen 4:15 - Are you saying he put a mark on Cain to be killed, so that he would not be killed? If yes, can you please explain your reasoning?

Wow, excited to learn where we see the connection to Seth

Gen 5:5 - Unpolluted environment is what I assumed before reading Gen 6:3 "And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years."

Gen 5:29 - Excited to learn how they all connect

I'll post the next 5 chapters before Tuesday. Thanks for all your input, really has us thinking critically!

I do not agree with the ideology of "god the mother" that is why I mentioned those verses were interpreted incorrectly. They say that since "us" and "male and female" were mentioned, that implies there is a god the father and god the mother. I said that it was not the case because he only made "him" (male) in his image. When male and female was mentioned, it was stated separately after a semi colon which made it independent from what was said before it. The creator of that organization was originally an SDA which is why they have similar practices. I recently came in contact with one of their members and did research on them because I did not agree with what they were trying to teach. They are popular right now and targeting college students, shopping centers, and gated communities. They are instructed to not teach to the disabled or the homeless.
Oh! Well, that's a relief. I thought for a minute there that I was going to have to bail from this thread
I do beg your pardon!

Btw, am I the only one who notices how a lot of cults branch from the SDA movement? I know of an active cult out in SoCal right now that is a branch of the SDA movement, and their beliefs are absolutely bonkers! They have videos on Youtube, most of which are in Spanish.
Of course, I know not all cults come from the SDA belief, it's just interesting to me how many cults there are that do have some sort of tie to it.

Where did Matthew Henry get this concept from?
I'm not sure that I can say that God ever intended women to be equal to men.
Animals were created before Eve because He saw that Adam was lonely.
He then created Eve as a help meet to Adam.
While I was studying, I noticed that God always refers to Eve as the wife of Adam. She is always referred to as the wife until Adam names her Eve when they are to leave the Garden of Eden.
According to Gen 3:16 "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" According to this verse it appears men and women are not equal. God cursed women after Eve's sin and tempting Adam to commit sin. When they discuss the lineages, it is spoken of the sons not daughters. If anything seems amiss, please shed light on it! I'm making observations from where I am presently at in the Bible. I know things will change on the way to and when Revelation is concluded. The curses will be broken!
It is my personal beliefs that men and women are equal (Galatians 3:28). However, it is also my belief that we are not the same. In short: we are equal, but not the same. The Lord is always putting variety in his creation. That always amazes me. We are all unique. So, of course He made men and women different. Men have their unique strength and superior capabilities and women have their own unique strengths and superior capabilities. This way we harmonize with each other. Speaking as a woman, I don't want to be the same as a man! I want men to be men with their exceptional qualities that God gave them, just as I want to have my wonderful qualities that He gave me. Besides, being the same would be boring!

"....by affirming the goodness of the inherent differences between the sexes, the biblical worldview is more pro-woman, whereas the feminist view actually devalues women by devaluing or ignoring innate differences between women and men. To the feminists, women and men are interchangeable (except that men are bad!); to the Christian, they are both indispensible.

Christians have always affirmed that it is possible for individuals to submit to others without implying an ontological inferiority. Jesus, God the Son, submitted to the Father (Luke 22:42); and no orthodox Christian would claim that Jesus was less God than the Father because of it (Phil. 2:6, John 10:30). Indeed, Christ submitted to His mother and stepfather (Luke 2:51), although He was infinitely superior. In the same way, the command for wives to submit to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22 ff.) does not dehumanize women, especially as the husbands are then commanded to love their wives as sacrificially as Christ loved the Church."

Okay, here's the rest of my thoughts. Also, I probably should note that I have different beliefs than most people as far as creation goes. As a Biblical Creationist, I do not believe in the big bang theory. I believe in a 6 literal day creation week occurring approximately 6,000 years ago. I state this to let it be known that there are other beliefs than those already stated in this thread and people tend to vary as far as origins beliefs go.
Anyway, back to it...

Genesis 3
"The serpent contradicted God’s warning, saying that Eve wouldn’t die—instead, something [presumably] wonderful would happen—she would become just like God! So she disobeyed God and ate the fruit. She offered some to Adam, and he ate." ~CMI
This of course is a sad situation. But, what makes my heart swell is what comes next. She is promised a son that will claim victory over the serpent. The only one who could do this is man and God, aka Christ! Adam and Eve were the first to receive the Gospel! This fills my heart with joy.

Genesis 4

Cain murders Abel. This is the first murder. Cain is married. I believe that Cain married his sister. Genesis says that Adam had sons and daughters. Also, the law against marrying relatives didn't come about until Moses. In the beginning, we were created perfectly and there wouldn't have been problems with offspring coming from a brother and sister. But, due to being in a fallen world, later this wouldn't be the case due to mutations. "Harmful mutations would take many generations to accumulate to levels where close intermarriage would be dangerous for the offspring." ~CMI

Genesis 5

Genealogy of people who lived a very long time. This went downhill after Noah. There are a few theories as to why this is the case. A good possibility is due to Noah having had his sons when he was 500 years old, causing genetic reason for the decline in lifespan after the Great Flood.

Enoch on the other hand, is taken by God. He is one of two people in the Bible who this happens to, the other being Elijah.
God is the only one who knows how he created the earth and the Heavens. You all might be partially right in your theories. Knowing how small the earth is compared to the Sun, a spec of sand in the solar system, etc; it would be too much for me to try and learn when I haven't read His Word once from cover to cover. Serving God and keeping our faith is key.

"She is promised a son that will claim victory over the serpent." - What verse(s) did you read this? I read Chapter 3 again and did not see this.

What does CMI stand for?

Gen 5 - The decrease in lifespan is possibly from what God states in Gen 6:3

Enoch is one blessed man! So is Elijah!

The scientific “big bang” theory regarding the origin of the universe is quite compatible with the biblical story, theorizing that just before the beginning all matter in the universe was compressed to a “singularity” the size of a marble! However, the point of GN is not how the world was created or how long it took, but who created it and why. It is concerned with metaphysics rather than mere physics. There is no reason to believe that the “days” in GN 1 must refer to 24 hour periods, because 2PT 2:8 says “With the Lord a day is like a thousand [or a billion] years”, so it is permissible to believe God created the world using whatever methods taking however long scientific data seem to support.

I went back to look to see why you might have thought that. I see I wasn't as clear as I could have been. Glad you didn't bail!

I really don't have knowledge about cults except from some mainstream ones that have documentaries like Waco, TX and the one where everyone unfortunately took a drink that made the entire community pass. I recently had this experience and researched this group that has become popular in Canada, Europe, US, and other countries that stems from Korea. I never really knew the beliefs of SDA prior. Still don't really know it in depth apart from what I quickly researched to denounce the people who were trying to teach me "god the mother" The guy who started this group was a former SDA member who was kicked out of SDA and started his own church. After he passed, they claimed he was Christ, when he never claimed he was Christ while he was alive. He also never agreed to the ideology of "god the mother". It is beyond wild!

They got me to listen by inviting me to Bible Study. What is sad is that people who are earnestly searching for God get misguided by this group. They have a clever way of enticing you with scripture for those who don't have discernment. Thankfully I believe only in Jesus Christ and my spirit was disturbed about what they were saying and went to research them.

You have studied a lot of scripture, looking forward to catching up with you in His Word.

I would have been just as surprised as you hearing a pastor saying that Christ could have came as a woman. I would have not returned either😂

I agree with you, that God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is male. God is referred to as He throughout the Bible. Jesus Christ is male. God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are one, Alpha and Omega.

From what the Bible shows we were vegans until Noah's time. I mentioned this because there are vegans who believe that is the only way we should eat and there are carnivores that believe we should only eat animal products. That was interesting for me to read regarding our diet.

Glad we're in your favorite book! I'm developing more of an appreciation for Genesis now that I'm more engaged in learning His Word from beginning to end.

I noticed that too. Light was made before the sun and the moon. Pretty fascinating.

Interesting, never knew that about ribs, have to look into that

I just want to interject that "light made before the stars" jibes with the Big Bang theory.

Hopefully everyone in this thread is safely entitled to their beliefs? I guess you could say I'm here to be the Biblical Creationist presence in this thread. I hope to not step on anyone's toes, while at the same time I pray the Lord will help me to be a respectful presence.

"She is promised a son that will claim victory over the serpent." - What verse(s) did you read this? I read Chapter 3 again and did not see this.
I'm sorry if I made that sound like a verse, it was actually a quote. It is talking about the verse that alludes to (or even prophecies, if you will) to the coming of Christ.

Genesis 3:15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[e] and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.

Also in Genesis Eve mistakenly says/thinks she has actually given birth to Christ (she is mistaken, because obviously it was too soon for Christ to come into the world)...
"Some translations take ʾet as the preposition “with” (ESV; NASB), which some believe to be either a positive expression (Eve acknowledging God’s help) or as an expression of arrogance (God created the first man, so I [Eve] have created the second man). However, ʾet is most naturally taken as the direct object marker, making the text naturally read: “I have gotten a man, namely, the Lord (YHWH).” In other words, Eve thought the child was the promised seed of Genesis 3:15 (although she was mistaken).
The direct object marker ʾet (אֶת) occurs five times in Genesis 4:1-2 but is only translated once (in verse 1 as “with”, ESV). It would seem the reason ʾet is translated as “with” (or even “from” see NKJV) is that otherwise it looks like Eve was expecting a divine Messiah.

I went back to look to see why you might have thought that. I see I wasn't as clear as I could have been. Glad you didn't bail!
Thanks! Me too!

Yes, that is wild! I started having a fascination with cults in my teens. I don't mean fascination in that I want to join them or condone them. I just have a fascination for the behaviors of people, I guess. Anyway, I have studied cults off and on just to see what they believe and why it contradicts with true scripture, as well as why their brainwashing is dangerous. I agree with you, they are clever with their enticement and it's sad! Fortunately, there are some groups out there that help people coming out of cults to de-program.
I'm thankful you searched the truth and were guided away from them!!

You have studied a lot of scripture, looking forward to catching up with you in His Word.
I concur, and respectfully feel the same. Blessings!

Oh, btw Verite, may I ask what translation of the Bible you are using for this study? Since we are just starting out, I might switch to the translation you are using. Thanks!

You asked if everyone is safely entitled to their beliefs. You have been nothing but kind and respectful, not sure why you were feeling this way! The thread is focused on reading Genesis to Revelation. There were theories mentioned on creation, I don't have knowledge of these theories to make comment. I would definitely say this is a safe space for people's belief in Jesus Christ. It is my belief to not add or to take away from His Word. If there is scripture as evidence on any topics, please share!

Gen 3:15 - I wasn't sure how to interpret that verse. "he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel" - who is being referred to and how did they come to that conclusion?

Yes, me too! They are known for being extremely kind which makes it easy for people to fall into the trap. The person I was dealing with was very nice! Feel bad for them because it seems like they might not know the whole story of how the organization came to be. There are number of ex members helping get current members out of that organization by speaking out which is awesome.

I'm using the King James Version

I should post Genesis Chapter 9 and 10 notes tomorrow

Oh, don't mind me. Sometimes things come across online differently than they would have sounded in person. I don't often get positive reactions from people (even Christians) when they find out that I'm a Biblical Creationist. So, I guess that was my way of saying with a meek voice over here, "I'm a little different! But if that's okay, I'll stick around." :giggle:

Gen 3:15 - I wasn't sure how to interpret that verse. "he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel" - who is being referred to and how did they come to that conclusion?
It is my belief that this is speaking of the coming of Christ/The Messiah. I personally believe that the bruising of the heel is talking about the crucifixion of Christ.
And "he shall bruise your head" is talking about Christ overcoming the power of death when He resurrected and thus defeating Satan forever.

Have you ever heard the old R&B song Smiling Faces Sometimes by The Undisputed Truth? It's one of those songs that tells good advice.
I think you are right, they most likely aren't aware of all the facts, or they are too brainwashed or in denial. They could really believe what they've been told. It's very sad. I'm so glad former members are trying to help though!
One of the hardest things in life to overcome is the lies that the mind sometimes believes.

Thank you for answering! And thank you for your responses! I read scriptures every day after I wake up and I'm currently reading the NASB. I'm in the Gospels. I've read the Bible all the way through a number of times in different translations including the KJV. I've lost count as to how many times I've read the Bible.
In keeping with the translation you are using, I will switch to the KJV. I read Genesis 1-5 this afternoon. I will either do afternoon reading or evening reading. You just got here and you've already doubled my studying ;)

Thanks for sharing. I believe we should read His Word from beginning to end. Many people can read books from cover to cover, but somehow most do not do that with the Bible.

Will you be starting from Genesis again? Have you ever completed reading from Genesis to Revelations?
Yes, I have, more than once. With the intent to know and trust God alone over me myself in my actions and reactions, to see the deceptions that happen in us all, in wants over true needs
True need, Shelter, clothing, food not only physically, spiritually too.
To live, laugh and love righteously

V,

Surely you don't think GN 1:27 teaches that God is a physical Being (other than as manifest by material creation and the incarnate Christ), but just in case, please read JN 1:18 & 1JN 4:12 ASAP.

Eve being created from Adam's rib shows that serving does not mean being inferior, just as Jesus came to serve per MT 20:25-28.

Regarding science: I use various sources.

People who refuse to take responsibility for their crimes always try to cover it up.

I don't think GN means to teach that Eve was punished more harshly. We know that God punishes justly.

Gen 4:15 says the mark was put on Cain so that no one would kill him--perhaps because vengeance is the Lord's.

Yes, maybe Gen 6:3 explains 5:5.

Looking forward to your next post re GN6-10. Peace, out.

I'm not familiar with different belief systems/denominations within Christianity. I grew up learning there is one God and Jesus Christ died for our sins for us to have salvation. I focus on Jesus Christ. If you believe in Jesus Christ, lets walk together and study His Word!

I'm not familiar with that song. I listen to EDM😀 I agree, it's hard for many to come to terms that they have been believing a lie. If your heart wants to know and speak truth. Once you discover a lie you will handle it righteously and move on accordingly.

I'm glad I found this place. It's hard to find people who read the Bible daily and from beginning to end. How long does it usually take you to read the Bible from cover to cover?

Those people from that organization claiming "god the mother" have me studying the Bible with the most engagement I've had in my life😂

Hey! In regard to Gen 1:27. I did not mention that God was a "physical being". I stated that God created Adam in His own "image." Image is a "visual" representation. I only go into detail on this because of an organization claiming "god the mother" using this verse as evidence that there is a "god the mother"

Thanks for the verses. Objective is to read the Bible from cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation, in sequential order.

I believe God punishes justly. I mentioned Eve was punished more harshly than Adam. That was just.

Gen 4:15 - I read that verse completely wrong, thanks! Reading the part of "setting a mark" confused me at first. I went back and reread it and now I understand.

I posted notes from Genesis Chapter 6-10 to help with the 1000 word count maximum. Have a nice one!
