Good morning!
Leviticus Ch.1
Instructions concerning burnt offerings.
Notice the offering is to be without blemish. This is symbolic of the ultimate sacrifice.
I wonder what are considered blemishes. I remember Jacob (Israel) selecting animals with spots from Laban.
vs. 9 The washing of the inward parts and the legs probably means purification and cleanliness.
Nice note, thanks!
Ch.2
More instructions concerning offerings.
Frankincense is mentioned. A note about frankincense: It is "from the resin sap of the Boswellia tree native to the southern coastal Arabian regions, this white, bitter smelling compound turns into a perfumed richness only befit for a King which is a reason why the biblical Israelites kept it pure and sacred" in the tabernacle.
Something I read about why frankincense was used. "The best explanation appears to be that frankincense was used in grain offerings because of its aroma; this seems most likely in view of the associations with frankincense and its scent elsewhere in the Bible. This explanation coheres with the idea that aroma plays a central role in the
world of sacrifice. This is already explicit in God’s reaction to Noah’s animal sacrifice after the flood: “The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: ‘Never again will I curse the ground because of humankind’”
Great notes, thanks😀
vs.10 What is leftover of the meat offering shall belong to Aaron and his sons.
Ch. 3
Instructions concerning peace offerings.
The end of the chapter says: It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.

Ch. 4
Instructions concerning sin offerings. There is instructions for how priests are to do sin offerings and instructions for rulers and instructions for the common people.
It shall burn upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the Lord; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

Ch. 5
Instructions for trespass offerings.
Trespasses that are mentioned: If someone sees or knows something and they do not tell what the saw/know, this is wrong. If someone touches the carcass unclean animal. If someone touches the uncleanness of man (we'll get more into what makes a person unclean as we go along). If someone makes an oath, whether it be good or evil, if it be hidden from him when he comes to know it he shall be guilty. A person guilty in any of these things shall confess and bring a trespass offering to the priest.

Ch. 6
More about trespass offerings.
When someone commits a trespass against the Lord, and lies to/deceives his neighbor. When someone finds a lost item and lies about having it. The person who has done these things must pay back what they took, return the lost item(s) they found, make right what they've done wrong. The wrong doer is instructed to pay the full amount of the item and add an additional 1/5th. Then he shall bring a trespass offering, the priest shall make atonement, and he shall be forgiven.
vs.9 The Lord says that the burnt offering is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it. In the following verses we are told more about the burnt offering, as well as what must be done with the ashes.
As the chapter proceeds, we continue to get instructions about offerings and details about the priests part in the offerings

Ch.7
We continued to be told about the priests part in the offerings, as well as more instructions about the offerings.
vs.8 we are told the priest can have the hide of the animal
In vs.23 we are told that the people are not to eat any manner of fat of ox, sheep, or goat. And in vs.27 we are told that blood should not be eaten. If someone consumes blood, he shall be cut of from his people.

Ch.8
We are told of the consecration of Aaron and his sons. They are cleansed and dressed.
Then Moses anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and sanctified them. Then he anointed the alter and all its vessels, sanctifying them. Then Moses anointed Aaron, to sanctify him. After this, a bullock was slew for a sin offering and the blood was used to purify the alter. Then a ram was brought in for a burnt offering, and it's blood was sprinkled round about the alter. Next was a ram of consecration, blood of this was put on Aaron and his sons right ear lobe, thumb of right hand, and big toe of right foot. The rest of the blood was sprinkled round about the alter.
We continue to be given details of the consecration.
Moses tells Aaron and his sons that they are not to leave the tabernacle for 7 days, until the days of their consecration ends. Aaron and his sons obey.

Ch.9
After Aaron and his sons were consecrated, they are told to offer a sin offering and a burnt offering to the Lord. Then the people are told what offerings they should bring. The priests dealt with these offerings according to the instructions that had been given to them.
Moses and Aaron came out of the tabernacle, blessed the people, the glory of the Lord appears, fire came from the Lord and consumed the offering on the alter, and the people shouted and fell on their faces.

Ch.10
Nadab and Abihu disobeyed the Lord, so He consumed them with fire. Nadab and Abihu violated the holy law of the priesthood. Priests must be holy before the Lord.
I had another note saying " They offered strange fire before the Lord which he never commanded." - Which ultimately makes it unholy
Later, Moses becomes aggravated at Aaron's 2 other sons because they had not eaten the sacrifice. Moses questions Aaron as to why he didn't eat the offering. Aaron basically says, "Due to the tragedy that has happened to me, would it have been right in the eyes of the Lord if I had eaten the offering?" Moses was content with this.
I'm still not clear why that justifies him not eating the offering. Is it because he's grieving?

All this talk of lambs, I ended up purchasing lamb yesterday lol. I'm looking forward to having that soon.
😂 I have been wanting lamb too! Going to get some on the next visit to the store. You're blessed to be in the country, where prices are much cheaper!

I hope your day is blessed and as smashing as a lamb dinner!
😅 I hope your day was blessed, can't wait to get some lamb on the table🥩

Thanks! The Lord is my strength😀
It's funny you mentioned that I was probably sound asleep. Usually, I'm up most the night, but I actually slept last night!
Nice, glad you got some rest💤
I read your notes and jotted down a few areas I'll probably reply to later. I'll be heading out the door soon, so probably in the afternoon.
Thank you🙏
May all go well and safely for you today!
It did, I hope yours as well😀 Still managed only to get notes in by 930PM which is better than yesterday😅I'll get back to normal soon. I have to make sure I sleep, so it's showing to be a slow process back to the norm. Again, apologies for typos in advance😅

I may not be understanding your question, so pardon me if I don't answer correctly. Whereas Bezaleel and the craftsmen were given wisdom of how to build the tabernacle and were allowed to build it, Aaron and his decendents were the only ones who could serve in the tabernacle, perform sacrifices, and enter the Holy Place.
Yes, you are right. I think I must of been tired and didn't read that correctly. I see that God is instructing what they will be making
I feel the same way. This part always leaves me perplexed. After seeing all that God did in Egypt. After the incredible miracle of the parting of the sea...how did they forget the exhilarating feeling of walls of water on either side of them as they walk on dry land through the sea? This is not to mention that they have the pillar of cloud amongst them in the day and the pillar of fire at night.
I feel like these journeys of the children of Israel teach about the majority of people. The gate is narrow that leads to life, and few find it.
Exactly how I felt, perplexed. It shows everyone's heart does not serve God. Like you said that gate is narrow that leads to life
Wisely said! It's critical, in my viewpoint.
Glad you agree😀
Moses is acting as mediator. It is my belief that this is a symbolic action of Christ our mediator. We will learn more about that much later on.
I've been having a feeling that Moses is not a mere man based on what has been written. Excited to read what is ahead😀
Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies...
Something interesting I read: "Nakedness in the Bible also has to do with not having one's shield for battle. Every man who did not have his shield was considered naked.
In that one act of nakedness, Israel belittled their God in the eyes of the ungodly. They were no longer an example to the world.
That is exactly what we do when we strip off our robes of faith and let go of our confidence in God. Without childlike trust in God, a Christian stands naked before the world, exposed to all doubts, fears and unbelief!"
Interesting, thanks!
How many is not specified and the count of the Levites is typical not taken due to them being set apart. More on this as we go.

I take this to mean the Book of Life. More on this as we go...and particularly more on it as we get closer to the end of our journey.

This is another scripture pointing to the glory of God. In our current sinful state, we can't handle the glory of God. Moses had been with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights. As a result, the glory of the Lord shown on Moses' face, causing great fear among the people.
Very interesting, thank you😀
Something interesting I read: "What Moses more likely was wanting to conceal was the fact that the glory that was on Him was fading, an indication of his inability to retain what God had imparted to him. Moses didn’t want the people to notice that the glory apparent in his life couldn’t be sustained by him. Like everyone else, he was ordinary."
Paul talks about this very thing later on.
I don't think this is a spoiler, so I will include this part... "Paul tells us that because of Jesus the glory that we can experience is different than the glory Moses experienced. That because of Jesus, ordinary people like me and you who trust what Jesus has accomplished for us are being transformed by the Holy Spirit into His image, from glory to glory.”
Looking forward to seeing what Paul says, thank you😀
Mercy, I hope I got all this right. May the Lord be with me! I'm just a wee person here :giggle:
I appreciate all your input🙏 God looks at our hearts and knows who is with Him, Amen😀
May the Lord continue to be with us both!
Amen!😀

Thank you! Always with the help of God🙏
I'm elated to hear that. Was praying for you.
Thank you for your prayers, much appreciated🙏
Oh please lol. Don't worry about it. I'd rather be in the presence of a few typos than a Grammar Nazi. I often make errors, then realize it after the window of editing is closed lol.
😂You'd be surprised at the amount of Grammar Nazi out there. Yes, the 5-minute window should be removed😅

I'm having one of those up-all-night type of nights, or that's how it feels so far. So, I think I'll go look at your notes and then I might get started on Wednesday's scriptures. Looks like there are some long chapters ahead.
You're doing amazing keeping up with scripture, thanks for keeping up with the pace! I'll be back on track soon😀
May your Wednesday be blessed 🙏
Thank you! Hope yours was blessed as well😀

Oh dear, I may be ejected, but I must be candid and warn you that you are in the virtual presence of a person who uses leavening agents often.
😅
Yeast, baking soda, and baking powder are all leavening agents. Unleavened bread can not be made with any leavening agent.
Pardon me for some lighthearted humor (except I am serious about my biscuits!). You are a better person than me! I can't nix my occasional biscuit & gravy breakfast. Well, it depends on who makes it. If I make it, it's fire. But, I was at a place in Atlanta that may not have used leavening, 'cause I could have used their biscuits to play street hockey. Or maybe in a slingshot as a projectile. I often joke that the actual sign that we are in the end times is that no one knows how to make a good biscuit anymore.
Also, I use yeast to make homemade stromboli. I can't part with these delicacies. I consider it a blessing from the Lord that I have a knack for this sort of thing. You can just leave all the leavening to me :cool:
You keep the biscuits and I'll keep the lamb😊
Yes, as far as the blood goes, we are getting to that in today's verses (Lev. 17:11).
Also, it just makes for better eating.

And as far as fat goes, it's certain fat that they were told to not eat.
I read something interesting about this:
It does “plainly” say that all the fat is the Lord’s. But look at how it prefaces it; it describes the fat that covers the inwards, which includes a deposit known as “perirenal fat” in modern biology, and “the fat above the kidneys” in classical biology. And the fatty mass surrounding the liver (the caul). In other words, the “visceral fat” (chest-cavity fat) as it is now called is all specifically mentioned; but not mentioned is the “subcutaneous” (under-skin) and intra-muscular fat. All of the fat you will find in ground chuck will be intra-muscular fat. So is the fatty layer that often accompanies shanks and certain steaks.
God is very serious about us not eating the fat...it [is] clear that He is speaking of visceral fat.
God only mentions the fat of oxen, sheep, and goat; it does not mention chicken fat or fish fat.
Fat is considered by many cultures, particularly those in the middle east, to be a delicacy. And as we saw, only the visceral fat is prohibited.
God promises that they will eat the fat of the land (Gen. 45:18).
There is also a dual meaning because here the fat (the same Hebrew word is used as elsewhere in Leviticus) is pictured as a blessing of plenty of food and good land. (credit: thesimpleanswers)
Wow, thank you for this! Visceral fat is dangerous in humans and contributes to many disease. This make a lot of sense, thanks again😀
If I may add a few things to your study of the horns of the alter...
The horns of the altar were a place of protection for the guilty.
Alter means a place for making sacrifices, or the killing place.
The altar points to sacrifice and death, but it also speaks of a place of safety; a refuge until a matter can be settled fairly and appropriately.
And coming up we see that David refers to Yahweh as “the horn of his salvation” ...can he be foreseeing the sacrifice Jesus would make on the cross to pay with finality the sin debt he owed? So when you see the word “horn” used as a synonym for “strength”, think “killing place of safety”. Think “cross”. (credits: John Gage)

We get more into this as we go along in the Torah.

"In the normal grain offering, part of the grain went to the priests and they made bread from it for the priest and his family. But the grain offering associated with the anointing ceremony for the priests was not to be eaten, it was to be wholly burned before the LORD."
In vs.20 it says "when he is anointed," so I take it to mean that the bread is wholly burned in this instance.

Aaron and his sons were consecrated after the golden calf incident.

Smashing notes, as usual!
Thank you for you smashing answers😀

Leviticus Ch. 11
The people are told what beasts they can and can't eat.
Animals that have split hoofs and chews the cud, they were allowed to eat.
Definition of cud is:
partly digested food returned from the first stomach of ruminants to the mouth for further chewing. Ruminants is a 4 chambered stomach.
But, they couldn't eat an animal that chewed the cud, but didn't have split hoofs. This includes the camel, coney (aka hyrax), and rabbit.
Animals that didn't chew the cud, but had split hoofs were also not to be eaten. They were not allowed to eat pigs.
They were not to be eaten and their carcass was not to be touched.
Fish that have scales and fins were allowed.
They were not allowed to eat fish without fins and scales.
vs. 13-19 We are given a list of all the winged creatures they they were not allowed to eat
vs. 20-23 We are told what insects they could and couldn't eat.
vs 24-28 They are given instructions on what to do if they touch the carcass of an unclean animal.
vs. 29-30 More critters listed that they weren't allowed to eat.
vs. 31-47 More detailed instructions given on what to do about unclean animals and the cleansing process. Plus, more instructions about unclean animals.

Ch. 12
If a woman gives birth to a boy, she shall be unclean for 7 days. The 8th day the child is to be circumcised. The woman goes through 33 days of purifying. During that time, she may not touch any hallowed thing or come into the sanctuary.
If she gives birth to a girl, she shall be unclean 14 days, and the days of her purifying will be 66 days.
After her days of purification, she shall make offerings and she shall be cleansed.
I watched an interesting sermon on this a few years ago. The preacher said that this is done for the woman's benefit. It takes more out of the woman to have a girl than it does a boy, thus the Lord gives her more time to recover. He gives her twice as much time to recover. These laws weren't against the woman, they were to help the woman.
Interesting, I have not heard this before
Ch.13
Instruction for diagnosing and dealing with leprosy. Those who have leprosy must dwell outside the camp. Instructions are also given on how to properly deal with garments that are unclean with leprosy.

Ch.14
Instructions are given on what the priests must do after someone is cleansed of leprosy. Instructions are given concerning the offerings that are to be made, including instructions for the offerings if the person is poor.
Detailed instructions are given for the cleansing of a leprous house.

Ch.15
Instructions are given regarding discharges from the body :censored:
Whatever he touches is unclean.
Instructions are also given for women.

Ch.16
"God explains the proper way to come before Him. Aaron (or any other high priest) could not come into the Holy Place any time he pleased, but only at God’s invitation and at the appointed time and place. This was so important that God added the warning, lest he die."
Instructions are given about the offering the high priest is supposed to bring and instructions concerning the incense.
Atonement shall be made for the holy place. Instructions are given.
Instructions for annual atonement is given. This takes place on the 10th day of the 7th month. Atonement is to be made for the holy sanctuary, the tabernacle of the congregation, the alter, the priests, and for the people of the congregation.

Ch. 17
"In the pagan world at that time, it was customary to offer sacrifice wherever one pleased. Altars were often built on high hills, in forested areas, or at other special places.
With the building of the tabernacle, Israel had a centralized place of worship. Therefore, they were not allowed to offer sacrifice in any place or in any way they pleased. If they disobeyed, they would be cut off from among the people."
vs.7 The idea was that Israel was the covenant “wife” of God. When Israel worshipped, honored, and sacrificed to idols it was like committing adultery or even prostitution with those gods/demons they represented.

Ch.18
They were told not to approach a close relative and uncover their nakedness.
The nakedness of a woman is not to be uncovered, as well as her close relative.
The nakedness of woman on her monthly and the nakedness of the neighbor's wife are not to be uncovered.
They were not to offer their children as a sacrifice unto Molech (a Canaanite god).
Same sex sexual relations is an abomination.
Bestiality is an abomination.
Any who commit these abominations shall be cut off from his people.
Thank you, now I know who Molech is😀I wonder why they mention him before discussing who he is
Ch. 19
Keep the Sabbath and stay away from idols.
Meat of the peace offering may be eaten the same day and the next day, but it must be burned the 3rd day.
Do not gather the gleanings of your harvest, leave that for the poor and the stranger.
Various more laws are given...
Do not steal, deal falsely, or lie to one another.
Do not swear by the Lord's name falsely.
Do not cheat or rob your neighbor.
Do not curse the blind or be a stumbling block to them.
Judge righteously.
Do not be a talebearer (a gossip).
Do not hate your brother in your heart.
Do not take vengeance.
Love thy neighbor as thyself.
Do not sow your field with mixed seed.
The fabric of a garment shall not be of mixed linen.
Do not lie carnally with a concubine who is betrothed.
Do not eat of the fruit trees that are planted in the promised land for 3 years. In the 4th, the fruit belongs to the Lord. In the 5th year, they may eat it.
Do not eat anything with blood.
Do not shave around the sides of your head or disfigure your beard (that's what the pagans do).
Interesting
Do not make cuts on your body for the dead, or tattoos (more things the pagans do).
Have you noticed more people having tattoos?
Do not prostitute your daughter (a lot of this stuff is what the pagans do).
Keep the Sabbath.
Do not regard those with familiar spirits. Do not seek out wizards.
Wasn't clean on what "familiar spirits" meant
Honor elderly people.
Do not mistreat the stranger that sojourns in your land. Love the stranger as yourself.
Practice righteous judgement in measurement of length, weight, and volume.
Ch. 20
The people are again told not to sacrifice their children to Molech.
Those who go after wizards and those who have familiar spirits shall be cut off from the people.
Those that curse the father or mother shall be put to death.
The adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death.
Those having same sex sexual relations shall be put to death.
If a man marries a woman and her mother, it is wicked and they shall be burned.
Those committing bestiality shall be put to death.
If a man takes his sister and sees her nakedness, they shall be cut off from the people.
vs.18 probably means that a man and woman should not be doing the wild monkey dance during her monthly cycle.
😅
Man shall not lay with his aunt or his sister-in-law, in so doing they shall die childless.
The Lord says they shall inherit the land and they shall keep His statutes and judgements.
A man or woman who has a familiar spirit or is a wizard shall be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones.
Hoping for all the best in your day ahead!
Thank you🙏 May you have a restful night and a bright day tomorrow😀

Take your time! I'll be working on notes soon😀
Some news on this site has caused me to have very heavy heart.
Sorry to hear that you're heavy hearted. I do not read other threads on this site anymore, I'm not sure what caused your heavy heart. When I first joined, "the sabbath" thread is the only one I can remember reviewing. It was long and only read a number of pages, there was a lot of back and forth between members. Trust in God and let your heart be merry. I will be praying for you! Praying that your spirit is lifted up expediently😀
Do have a safe and blessed day, and I'll catch up later today.
Thank you and you as well🙏

Thank you for your comforting words and prayers. They are greatly appreciated!

I had to take several hours away, as I felt a heavy blow had been dealt. I feel that this site has banned a voice of wisdom. A presence that I held in the highest regard during my time here. A presence that will be greatly missed.

I might very well have ceased my activity on this site, if not for you. I will continue in this thread, day after day, for the duration of our study. God bless you for arriving on this site.

Do you prefer posting as I complete the chapters (since I do separate threads for each chapter) or all at once like the past couple days? Not sure if one is better than the other for you to read the notes
Either way is perfectly fine! I don't think one way is better than the other, unless one way is better than the other for you!
I continue to be inspired that you've kept up with this study. That inspired feeling brings warmth.

~~~~~
I had been in the process of going over your notes. I think I will proceed with that and then after supper I'll do today's study.
I hope your day has gone well and the evening is peaceful and pleasant 🙏
v12-13 Not clear why this would be considered clean
Something that might be interesting...
“At first sight this seems a very extraordinary provision. When the leprosy was beginning to show itself, and whilst the marks were hardly distinguishable, the poor patient was treated as unclean; but, when it had fully developed, from the crown of the head to the sole of the foot, the priest pronounced the leper clean. As long as we palliate and excuse our sins, and dream that there is much in us which is noble and lovely, we are not fit subjects for God’s saving grace…. we must confess that from the crown of our head to the sole of our foot we are full of need and sin – then we are nearest Christ, and in a fit condition to be richly blest, and made the channel of blessing to others." ~Meyer
LEVITICUS CHAPTER 18 NOTES
v18 Not clear on the meaning
18 Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.
Probably means that if you are married to a woman, don't marry her sister. This will cause rivalry. This is back in the days of polygamy.
v21 What is the fire to Molech meaning?
Back then, human sacrifices were made to Molech (a Canaanite god). I watched a video about him in the past. The historian or presenter of the video said that the idol had fire within it. It held its arms out and when a baby was placed onto the arms of the idol, the idol would draw its arms back and the baby would go into it and thus into the fire. Of course, it was no doubt operated by someone (the arms and such). We will continue to read about human sacrifices as we go along. God is disgusted with such actions, of course. And we'll learn the result of such actions and God's disgust as we go along.
LEVITICUS CHAPTER 19 NOTES
v3 “Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.” - Is it saying have honor for your parents in regard to mother and father in this verse? God is reminding to keep His sabbath
Yes. Respect mother and father. That's how I understand it.
v26 Do not eat anything with blood. Do not use enchantments. Not sure what “observe times” mean
"Pagans often employed divination and sorcery to try to determine what events would soon transpire. Divination and sorcery were widespread in the ancient Near East, particularly in Mesopotamia and Egypt." ~ Rooker
v27 Not clear on the meaning. Mar meaning is impair the appearance of; disfigure
vs.27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
This imitated pagan customs. "This the Gentiles did, either for the worship of the devils or idols, to whom young men used to consecrate their hair, being cut off from their heads, as Homer, Plutarch, and many others write; or in funerals or immoderate mournings." ~Poole
LEVITICUS CHAPTER 20 NOTES
v21 Not clear if this is in the sense of adultery or after the brother has passed/divorced
I would say it's speaking of adultery. It seems to be saying that to sleep with the brother's wife is like sleeping with the brother (while the brother and his wife are married).
Splendid notes! They always help me expand my knowledge too.
LEVITICUS CHAPTER 21 NOTES
v1 God is speaking to Moses. Not clear on the meaning “…There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people:” God is telling Moses to say this to the priests the sons of Aaron.
Defile (archaic) meaning violate the chastity of (a woman) [Dinah’s case]. Defile meaning desecrate or profane (something sacred). Profane meaning is relating or devoted to that which is not sacred or biblical; secular rather than religious; (of a person or their behavior) not respectful of orthodox religious practice; irreverent. Since Moses is talking to men, I would say the second meaning of defile is intended
v2 Kin that are near to you in the eyes of God are your parents, siblings (sister being a virgin and no husband v3), and children.
v3 For kin that is near may he be defiled. Not clear on who “he” is in this verse (v4 says the opposite), the purpose of stating for near kin, and may defile in what manner for what reasons? Is it that near kin is the exception for the priest, still would wonder may defile in what manner for what reasons
v4 “But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.” -
I looked up that Catholic priests cannot marry. I do not believe that defile here is meaning copulating. It is relating to not being profane which lies within the definition of defile in this context. Profane meaning is relating or devoted to that which is not sacred or biblical; secular rather than religious; (of a person or their behavior) not respectful of orthodox religious practice; irreverent. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) all copulated. God also brings up near of kin father, brother, and sons may he be defiled, in this context, copulating is not valid; that would be an abomination unto God
v5 How priests should groom themselves/appearance
v7 “They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for his is holy unto his God.” - God did not say a priest cannot have a wife. He stated what woman should not be his wife
v9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: shall be burnt with fire.” - It mentions a priest having a daughter, therefore, they are allowed to have a wife. Profanity is a serious offense
v10 High priests should not uncover their head or tear their clothes. High priest is referred to as male
v11 Not clear the meaning
v13 “And he shall take a wife in her virginity.” - God clearly states that priests can take a wife
v14 “A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.” - Instructions on who the high priest can take as a wife
v17-20 A man with blemish should not approach to offer the bread of his God - not clear on the meaning. A man with blemish is a man that is blind, lame, has a flat nose, any thing superfluous, brokenfooted, brokenhanded, crookbackt, dwarf, blemish in his eye, be scurvy, scabbed, or has his stones broken
v21 Is it saying men with blemishes cannot be priests?
v22 I think it is saying men with blemishes cannot be priest. They cannot offer the bread of his God, but they can eat the bread of his God
v17 God is speaking to Moses
v7 “In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.” - First day of Abib or feast of unleavened bread? (I think it’s the latter) Need to review what was discussed about this beforehand
v10-14 Instructions of the firstfruits
v16 “Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord.” - Instructions for meat offering. Is it saying 7th sabbath from first sabbath in Abib? Seven is significant again - 7th day, 7th sabbath, 7th month
v17 “Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the Lord.” -
First time I recall that God approves leaven being used (Biscuits approved😀). They were called wave-loaves, because they were presented to God by waving them toward heaven (not sure if this is accurate)
v21 “…throughout your generations…”
v22 God reminds to leave the gleaning for the poor and strangers
v34 The 15th of Tishrei (seventh month) shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord
v35 First day of the feast of tabernacles there shall be no servile work
v36 Seven days there shall be an offering made by fire to the Lord. On the eighth day there shall be no servile work (this is a sabbath day v39)
v37-38 Lists all the offerings
LEVITICUS CHAPTER 25 NOTES
v1 God is speaking to Moses
v2 When God gives the children of Israel land, the land should keep a sabbath unto the Lord
v3-4 Six years the children of Israel can sow the field, on the seventh year they can neither sow the field or prune the vineyard. Seven is important; sabbath of the land is on the seventh year
v8 “And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.” - interesting, seven is significant again
v9 In the 49th year, in the month of Tishrei (seventh month) on the 10th day shall be a day of atonement where the trumpet of the jubile will sound throughout the land of the children of Israel. Jubile is the spelling in the KJV
v10 The 50th year should be holy. The children of Israel should proclaim liberty. Jubile (Judaism) meaning is a year of emancipation and restoration, celebrated every fifty years. Other meanings are a special anniversary of an event, especially one celebrating twenty-five or fifty years of a reign or activity; a period of remission from the penal consequences of sin, granted by the Roman Catholic Church under certain conditions for a year, usually at intervals of twenty-five years
v11 Defines jubile as the 50th year. The children of Israel should not sow, reap, nor gather grapes
v12 Jubile is holy
v17 You should not oppress your neighbor, but fear God. Oppress meaning is keep (someone) in subservience and hardship, especially by the unjust exercise of authority
v18 You follow God’s commands you will be safe
v20-21 God will give blessings in the 6th year for you to be safe during the seventh year. Same as when the children of Israel were in the wilderness of sin, they received double portion of manna on the 6th day
v22 Like Joseph prepared Egypt for the drought, we should prepare wisely when there is abundance in the years of abundance
v23 The land is the Lord’s
v24-34 Instructions concerning property of land
v32 “Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may Levites redeem at any time.” - Levites appear to have the favor of God
v33 “…the house of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.”
v34 The field of the suburbs of the Levite cities may not be sold because it is their perpetual possession
v35 Not clear on the meaning
v37 Do not take advantage of or oppress the poor. Victual meaning is food or provisions
v39-40 Should not have slaves. All servants should be treated as a hired servant. Servants should serve until Jubile and then go back to their family
v43 “Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour: but shalt fear thy God.” - Rigour meaning is demanding, difficult, or extreme condition. We should remember this every day and when in leadership positions
v44 The children of Israel can not be bondmen for they are the Lords, but heathens can be bondmen
v44-55 More instructions on the handling of servants
