The Midianites were a nomadic people associated with the people of Moab in Numbers 25. God commanded that they be attacked in retribution for their part in the seduction of Israel into sexual immorality and idolatry.
"Moses was angry because the children of Israel failed to see the great danger of sexual immorality and idolatry posed by these women who before had led the men of Israel into these exact sins.
God’s people may be deceived by things that were a threat, but do not seem to be a present danger. The Israelite officers of the army thought these women were safe, but they were more dangerous to Israel than an army of mighty warriors. Israel could overcome mighty warriors if they were spiritually strong; but if they were seduced into immorality and idolatry, they would certainly fall.

Only the young girls would be allowed to live so that they may be taken as wives or slaves by the Israelite men, Deuteronomy 21:10-14.

I read it as referring to persons. Just before this it numbers the beasts and persons, then it talks about the portion of beasts and person that are to be given to the Levites.
Balaam’s name, amid the recital of the names of the Midianite kings, suggests that he was their advisor, their spiritual guru.
Later in the NT in Jude vs.11 we read: Woe unto them! for they ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
He “loved the wages of unrighteousness,” and gave himself up to do Satan’s bidding in “casting a stumbling-block before the children of Israel,” and miserably perished amongst the enemies of God and of His people. ~Bishop Wordsworth
To show plainly the abhorrence of murder, and to provide the more effectually for the punishment of the murderer, the nearest relation of the deceased, under the title of avenger of blood, (or the redeemer of blood,) in notorious cases, might pursue, and execute vengeance. ~ Matthew Henry's Commentary
vs 20& 21 But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he; Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
Another way this could be read is: If a person kills someone out of hatred so that he dies, that person is a murderer and the murder shall be executed by the revenger.
This re-enforces the law of Deuteronomy 17:6. In Deuteronomy 19:15 three, or at least two, witnesses are required to substantiate any charge

There isn't much known about it.
Britannica says that it is a "lost document referred to and quoted in the Old Testament (Num. 21:14ff.). The book is probably a collection of early Israelite war songs including hymns of victory, curses, mocking songs, and other literary genres recounting the victories of Yahweh, the God of Israel, over his enemies; it indicates that biblical books rely on both written and oral tradition. Similar to the Book of Jasher, the Book of the Wars of Yahweh is not identical with it, according to most scholars."
Sorry I don't have an answer...'cause no else one really has much of an answer about it either, unfortunately.
The Ethiopian speculation came up due to Moses having an Ethiopian wife. Since we aren't really told much about it, assumptions are made. One assumption (but not the only assumption) is that Jethro, Zipporah’s father, was actually from Ethiopia but had moved to Midian, making Zipporah an Ethiopian by birth but one who had lived in Midian.
Another assumption is that Zipporah died, and this was a second wife Moses took after Zipporah’s death. This is the one I've usually leaned toward over the years.

You're doing amazing job! With work, projects, illness, holidays, etc., it can be difficult to do a Bible study. I'm thankful we are reading scriptures! So many people neglect doing that. I'm happy when people just read a scripture or two a day, let alone several chapters, because so many aren't reading any at all. We take for granted that we have the amazing blessing of His Word and so many don't pay it any mind at all, sadly.
I caught up on Numbers and your notes that I hadn't got to. I stopped at Deuteronomy and will try to pick back up with it tomorrow...er, today. Whatever day I'm on lol.

v8 Should not eat pigs. Second time pigs have been singled out not to eat them
v21 Reminder not to eat animals that have died, they must be killed while alive in order to eat it. Wonder what are the laws for selling meat in US grocery stores concerning selling the meat of animals that have died. Can sell the meat of dead animals to strangers and aliens. Alien meaning is belonging to foreign country or nation. Not clear the meaning “…Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.” - my initial impression is do not kill an animal that is still nursing from their mother’s milk

v28-29 “At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up with thy gates: And the Levite, (because he hath no part no inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God ma bless thee in al the work of tine hand which thou doest.” - God is always telling us of to take care of strangers and the less fortunate
