DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 4 NOTES

v1 Moses tell the TCOI God’s statutes and judgements that they may live to enter the promise land

v2 No one should add or take away from God’s Word

v12 TCOI only heard God’s voice

v25-28 It appears Moses is prophesizing what will happen to TCOI once they enter the promise land

v29 “But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and will all thy soul.” Amen!

v30-31 “When thou are in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God; ) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.” - God is merciful. “latter days” was mentioned, I wonder what this means

v32 Mentions God created man upon the earth

v39 Interesting hell hasn’t been mentioned yet when they talk about heaven and earth

v40 Following God’s statutes and commands prolongs your life forever

v43 The three cites of refuge that a slayer who killed unawares could flee to

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 6 NOTES

v1-25 Continued review of TCOI

v2 “That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statues and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.” - should always fear God

v5 “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” - The Bible keeps reminding us

v6 “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: “ - must believe v2 and v5

v7-9 We should teach our children v2/5 and hang the commandments in our homes as reminders

v16 Need to review what happened in Massah

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 7 NOTES

v1-26 Review of TCOI

v9 “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, the faithful God, which keepth covenant and mercy with them that love him his commandments to a thousand generations;” -God takes care of those who love him and keep His commandments

v10 God will “And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.” - strong words

v13 You are blessed and loved by God when you follow His Word

v14 For a man, woman, or cattle not to be barren is a blessing

v15 God will keep sickness from you

v18 Should not be fearful when you’re with God

v21 The Bible states that God is mighty and terrible.
Terrible meaning 1. extremely or distressingly bad or serious 2. causing or likely to cause terror; sinister. I believe God is extremely serious and can cause terror to those who hate him

v26 “Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.” -
I was thinking what happens if you stay at a friend’s/family member's house, hotel, Airbnb, etc. and there are images there such as a buddha statue - you can’t remove it because it is not your property, detesting it knowing it is wrong would suffice I would think since it is not your home that you own, it is a place being visited

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 8 NOTES

v1-20 Continued review of TCOI

v2 TCOI living in the wilderness was God’s way of humbling them and to know their heart; to know if TCOI would keep His command or not - God tests us to know our heart

v3 Man does not live by bread alone, but by God - Powerful!

v4 Appears to be a sign

v5 “Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.” - That is touching, you discipline a child you love

v6 The Bible is repeating over and over to keep His commandments. They will keep you on the righteous path and to fear God always

v14 When you are doing well in life do not forget God

v18 “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy father, as it is this day.” - We have seen repeatedly through the Bible thus far that people of God do obtain wealth. For some reason some people think all wealthy people must be corrupt which is not so. When you have wealth, you have to remember not to forget God or his commandments

v19 The Bibe stresses the doom of worshiping other gods

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 9 NOTES

v1-29 Continued review of TCOI

v3 God said he would destroy the Anakims (giants) v2

v5 Interesting what God says. God drove out the Anakims for their wickedness and to keep His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

v6 “Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.” - God is very direct, serious

v7 God reminds TCOI of their rebellion against Him

v9 Has God been speaking or Moses “When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you, the I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: “ - This appears as if Moses, have not been paying close attention, for some reason I thought God was speaking at times.
You can stay alive not eating or drinking for 40 days

v14 “Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and lot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.” - “blot their name from under heaven” not clear the meaning

v18 Moses did not eat for 40 days and night because of all the sin of TCOI

v20 It states God was angry with Aaron. It didn’t mention Moses

v21 Moses states he took the sin of TCOI
(reminds me of what Jesus Christ did for us)

v22 TCOI provoked God at Massah

v24 “Ye have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.” - Yikes!

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 10 NOTES

v1-22 Continued review of TCOI

v9 God is the Levites inheritance, isn’t that the best inheritance?

v10 Moses went to the mount again 40 days and night like the first time

v14 Heaven and earth is mentioned again, not hell

v15 “Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.”

v17 “For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: “ - You can not bribe God

NUMBER CHAPTER 26 NOTES
v9 Dathan and Abiram were the most famous of the congregation and were sons of Eliab. They are Reubenites . Interesting that they were not killed during the Korah incident and refusing to come when Moses called on them
Dathan and Abiram were killed during the Korah incident. Sources: Numbers 16:27-33 and Numbers 26:10

NUMBERS CHAPTER 27

v17 I wonder why Moses requested this if Moses was their leader. Was it to have someone who takes over after he passes?

v21 Not clear if it is saying that the priests and TCOI should follow Joshua’s every command - that’s how I’m seeing it
I'm also understanding it as yes to both of these questions.

NUMBERS CHAPTER 30
v9 “But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.” - not clear the meaning “shall stand against her”
Her commitments are binding.

------
Here's an interesting article on vows...
https://inspiredscripture.com/bible-studies/numbers-30#gsc.tab=0

NUMBERS CHAPTER 31 NOTES
v7 They slew all the males. Was this vengeance for the Midianitish woman that was attempting to lie with a man of Israel? Have to review why God was angry with Midian

v10 TCOI burned down the cities. Is this why we don’t know for sure where Midian is? Still have to research this

The Midianites were a nomadic people associated with the people of Moab in Numbers 25. God commanded that they be attacked in retribution for their part in the seduction of Israel into sexual immorality and idolatry.

v15 Moses was angry with men of Israel that went to war for keeping the captives alive - not for certain, this is how I’m seeing it
"Moses was angry because the children of Israel failed to see the great danger of sexual immorality and idolatry posed by these women who before had led the men of Israel into these exact sins.
God’s people may be deceived by things that were a threat, but do not seem to be a present danger. The Israelite officers of the army thought these women were safe, but they were more dangerous to Israel than an army of mighty warriors. Israel could overcome mighty warriors if they were spiritually strong; but if they were seduced into immorality and idolatry, they would certainly fall.
We often think of many things as dangerous to us as the people of God – hostile government, secular humanism, academic attack, and so forth. But when God’s people accept things among them that open the door to immorality and idolatry, this can be a much greater danger than any of those other things." (source: enduringword)

v17 Wow! - I guess this answers question for v9 partly. Moses was willing to keep virgin women - are they a part of TCOI?

Only the young girls would be allowed to live so that they may be taken as wives or slaves by the Israelite men, Deuteronomy 21:10-14.

v46 It was pertaining to half v43, does that mean there were 32,000 persons in total?

I'm only counting 16,000 here.
16,000 (women), out of which one in fifty were given to the Levites.

v47 “…Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast…” - is “man” referring to the species of man or to “male”?
I read it as referring to persons. Just before this it numbers the beasts and persons, then it talks about the portion of beasts and person that are to be given to the Levites.

v8 Why was Balaam slain when he was a man of God? -
Balaam’s name, amid the recital of the names of the Midianite kings, suggests that he was their advisor, their spiritual guru.
Later in the NT in Jude vs.11 we read: Woe unto them! for they ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

He “loved the wages of unrighteousness,” and gave himself up to do Satan’s bidding in “casting a stumbling-block before the children of Israel,” and miserably perished amongst the enemies of God and of His people. ~Bishop Wordsworth

NUMBERS CHAPTER 35 NOTES
v19 “The revenger of blood” -
I wonder who the revenger of blood is? If someone was killed, would their siblings, parents, close friends - who out of their loved ones would be designated the avenger or would it be any of these people?
To show plainly the abhorrence of murder, and to provide the more effectually for the punishment of the murderer, the nearest relation of the deceased, under the title of avenger of blood, (or the redeemer of blood,) in notorious cases, might pursue, and execute vengeance. ~ Matthew Henry's Commentary

NUMBERS CHAPTER 35 NOTES

v20 Is it saying that you can kill someone without hatred? Because to kill with hatred is sinful in v21

v21 Enmity meaning is the state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something. Not clear who is the person who killed with enmity vs the revenger of blood

vs 20& 21 But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he; Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.

Another way this could be read is: If a person kills someone out of hatred so that he dies, that person is a murderer and the murder shall be executed by the revenger.

v30 “…but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.” - Not clear what it is saying, since before it stated witness would cause a murder to die
This re-enforces the law of Deuteronomy 17:6. In Deuteronomy 19:15 three, or at least two, witnesses are required to substantiate any charge

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I'm terribly behind, but at least I got caught up on Numbers' notes. I'll see what all I can get caught up with next!
Blessings!
Joshua and Caleb try to convince the people that the land is good and that they need not fear the people there, for the Lord is with the people. But, the people wouldn't hear it. The Lord became angry. Moses intercedes for the people. God pardons them (vs.20). But, God is also just, thus He says that the people will not see the promised land. Only Joshua and Caleb will see it. Gods tells they people they will have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. Only their little ones and Joshua and Caleb will make itto see the promised land. As for the spies that delivered the evil report about the land, God killed them with a plague.
The people set out to take on the people of the land. Moses warns them that God is not with them and that they will fall by the sword. They don't listen and go anyway. And sure enough, the people that were in the land smote them.
I have to go back and review. Don't remember Moses telling them not to go. I thought God was saying it was destined to happen.
vs.41-43 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper. Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
Korah and his followers rebel against Moses and Aaron.
"When Moses heard of the dangerous unbelief of Israel, he and Aaron fell on their faces before God. At the dangerous rebellion of Korah, Moses once again fell on his face in a humble posture of prayer."
"Dathan and Abiram are co-conspirators with Korah. They would not meet with Moses, nor answer his challenge. Instead, they accused Moses of wanting to kill the people of God.
I completely missed this part. You mind sharing what verse?
"When Moses heard of the dangerous unbelief of Israel, he and Aaron fell on their faces before God. At the dangerous rebellion of Korah, Moses once again fell on his face in a humble posture of prayer."
vs. 20-22
Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they (Moses and Aaron) fell upon their faces [and they prayed].
vs. 12-14 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:
Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us? Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.
God warns that the people need to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
The ground opened under them and swallowed them up. They went alive down into the realm of the dead.
Was there a verse that mentioned "realm of the dead"?
vs. 33 ...went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them...
If the earth closed in upon them, they must have died. Thus, they must be in the realm of the dead.
I didn't get this part because Moses had done this sign before. Why would we have doubted God? I did not see a verse stating Moses doubted God. I need to go back and review.
vs. 12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
doubt definition: to be uncertain about (something) : to believe that (something) may not be true or is unlikely
Unfortunately, it is a book that is lost to us in the current time.
How did you come to this conclusion?
There isn't much known about it.
Britannica says that it is a "lost document referred to and quoted in the Old Testament (Num. 21:14ff.). The book is probably a collection of early Israelite war songs including hymns of victory, curses, mocking songs, and other literary genres recounting the victories of Yahweh, the God of Israel, over his enemies; it indicates that biblical books rely on both written and oral tradition. Similar to the Book of Jasher, the Book of the Wars of Yahweh is not identical with it, according to most scholars."
Sorry I don't have an answer...'cause no else one really has much of an answer about it either, unfortunately.
Some suggest that Jethro, Zipporah’s father, was actually from Ethiopia but had moved to Midian, making Zipporah an Ethiopian by birth but one who had lived in Midian. We aren't entirely sure of this though. Sometimes, assumptions have to be made.
Thanks for clarifying! Where did the speculation come from that Jethro was Ethiopian? I just realized that Jethro is Reuel, have to review his origin of lineage. Wasn't he of Isreal? I could be way off here, I need to go back and review
The Ethiopian speculation came up due to Moses having an Ethiopian wife. Since we aren't really told much about it, assumptions are made. One assumption (but not the only assumption) is that Jethro, Zipporah’s father, was actually from Ethiopia but had moved to Midian, making Zipporah an Ethiopian by birth but one who had lived in Midian.
Another assumption is that Zipporah died, and this was a second wife Moses took after Zipporah’s death. This is the one I've usually leaned toward over the years.
You're doing amazing job! With work, projects, illness, holidays, etc., it can be difficult to do a Bible study. I'm thankful we are reading scriptures! So many people neglect doing that. I'm happy when people just read a scripture or two a day, let alone several chapters, because so many aren't reading any at all. We take for granted that we have the amazing blessing of His Word and so many don't pay it any mind at all, sadly.
I caught up on Numbers and your notes that I hadn't got to. I stopped at Deuteronomy and will try to pick back up with it tomorrow...er, today. Whatever day I'm on lol.
Take care and stay safe!
Blessings.
DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 14 NOTES
v1 We should not cut ourselves. Not clear the meaning of “…nor make any baldness between your eyes…”
v2 Those that follow God are a peculiar people unto Him and are above all nations on the earth.
Peculiar meaning 1. strange or odd; unusual 2. particular; special
v3 We should not eat anything abominable unto God
v4-6
Animals we can eat Ox, sheep, goat, hart, roebuck, fallow deer, wild goat, pygarg, wild ox, chamois, every beast that parteth the hoof + cleaveth the cleft into two claws + cheweth the cud
v7 Animals that are unclean
v8 Should not eat pigs. Second time pigs have been singled out not to eat them
v21 Reminder not to eat animals that have died, they must be killed while alive in order to eat it.
Wonder what are the laws for selling meat in US grocery stores concerning selling the meat of animals that have died. Can sell the meat of dead animals to strangers and aliens. Alien meaning is belonging to foreign country or nation. Not clear the meaning “…Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.” - my initial impression is do not kill an animal that is still nursing from their mother’s milk
v22 “Thou shalt truly tithe all that increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.”
v24 Not clear the meaning
v27 Should not forsake a Levite
v28-29 “At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up with thy gates: And the Levite, (because he hath no part no inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God ma bless thee in al the work of tine hand which thou doest.” -
God is always telling us of to take care of strangers and the less fortunate
