Why you think Jesus asked the women this question if he already knew?

Just to pass the time!

John 4: 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.

18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him."

The Samaritan woman at the well was the first person Jesus openly revealed Himself to as the long awaited Messiah.

It was a test and a proof. He tested her honesty and he proved to her he was Omniscient God having met her just then at the well and having information only she knew and had lived.

I understand that Magenta but I guess what I'm getting at is looking at a situation or interaction from the perspective of knowing all things before they happen, and knowing everything about a person without having to wait until they tell you.

It's mind blowing how having such an ability to know everything about a person would impact how you would approach having any conversation with people you meet.

Asking them questions you already know what their answers will be turns into a steering exercise to get them to act in ways you would already know that they will eventually come to act.

In essence the whole interaction becomes a steering exercise being played out to achieve the objective you already know will be achieved.

It has to be a special type of person to be able to cope with living that type of ground hog day existence every single day.

A normal person im sure would become mentally unwell in a short period of time.

I really can appreciate and understand that answer MF, and until recently would have given the same answer.

I however don't now think it's a simple matter of this woman being requested to ' go call her husband' is just for test purposes.

If we believe that Jesus knows all and everything, then wouldn't he already know the woman's marital status from the beginning, and already know that she would give him a truthful answer?

Yes. That's why he chose her to be the herald of his coming to the people in her village.

Nothing Jesus said or did was without purpose.

I think He was just steering the conversation.
Kind of like a parent asking a child, "What did you just do?" The parent already knows, but wants the child to consider what he just did.

Or a bit like winding up a toy car for it to go in a certain direction?

Teachers ask questions all the time knowing the answers, and having a specific goal in mind, and being aware of various possible outcomes. I know it is different from what you are saying Jesus was doing or did, but it bears a strong resemblance minus the absolute Deistic foreknowledge, in that teachers attempt to "steer" as you say. Are teachers mentally unwell? They do the same thing year after year...It has been said the woman was an outcast in her social situation due to how may "husbands" she'd had, and that is one reason she was at the well at that time of day, when nobody else was there in the heat of the day's sixth hour (noon). Mind you I am not saying the Bible says this. Anyways, she may have been looked upon somewhat more favourably after being the one to introduce Jesus to the rest of the people living there. The healing of lepers would have likewise had an extremely profound effect on their ability to be accepted within society, once cleansed.

Also...
This is the beginning of the Samaritan campaign.
Samaritans and Jews, especially Rabbi do not mix. There had been an ongoing civil war with the Samaritans.

therefore seek Father in Father'sSpirit and Truth for you too, and be born new from Father through Son's done work for us all to enter too, free of charge, thank you Father for this gift
Eph 1,2 not that I got it or have attained it, I see to stand in the present over the past and future, seeing the "Present" is the gift given by God to us all to be Able to remain content in whether it be going good or bad presently
Time to thank God for everything, good or bad happening, I see this is trust without a doubt, hopefully others will see this too and be freed from this mess here on earth while on this earth still for a short while, compared to eternity it is acceptable to me to go through adversities first

This alone is amazing, fro her to hear and see, and drink, hoping she did. The amazing part I see is:
We are able too worship God personally between God and us personally from within us each. Wow woe is me Isaiah 6:1-7

Jesus wasn't just a holy man, he was also God's right-hand man, so to
speak. (Heb 1:1-2)

So then; I think it reasonable to posit that Jesus' dialogue with that woman
was micro-managed by a higher power. In other words: his meeting with
that woman wasn't happenstance, viz: Jesus was directed to her.

John 4:34 . . My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me

John 6:38 . . I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but
the will of Him who sent me

John 8:28 . . I do nothing on my own initiative

John 8:29 . . He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me
alone; for I do always those things that please Him.

John 14:31 . . That the world may know that I love the Father, and as the
Father gave me commandment, even so I do.
