Hi

I like to find out from parents here, how do you nurture your kids' spiritual growth at home? Do you have regular prayer time with them? Or bible discussion? Or any other activity to help them grow in the Lord?

And if you can, share your challenges and difficulties you face and how you deal with them. :)

Love to hear from you.

My greatest challenge was when my boys, 3 of them, now grown where going though things and I had to learn to trust god and put them in his hands, instead of trying to fix it myself.I have had situations where I would fast, pray, have others pray the whole nine yards, one time i said lord
I am throwing in the towell, he said Oh, so you are gonna let me have it now! As soon as i let go God immediatly started working, had to learn the
hard way, had to be still and know that he is God.
Encouraging them always in the Lord, now my grandchildren call me on the phone and read bible to me! I thank them for breaking bread with me.
God can do anything!

Hi i'm new and just joined day before yesterday.

Being a single mom is not easy especially if you're rasing a boy. He's a very hyper and active boy even wihout the chocolates and candies.
I try to share about God to him in every day stuff that we do. It can be simple stuff like when we're looking for parking he knows that I always ask God for it and now he does it and promptly thanks God everytime we get the lot. Praying before a meal or before going to school shows them that they can rely on God to take care of them at all times. I do this with my son every morning that i walk him to his kindi.

Children relate to simple and little things cause it's easier for them to understand.
Also, i feel that we should never get caught in telling them little lies cause then they'll automatically assume that we're lying about other stuff.
If they have the confidence that they can always come to you for the truth.

Just to share.
If you're wrong, it's best to admit it upfront.

um. . . .i'm not a child but i work withi kids so i'd like to try helping.

first kids think you know EVERYTHING. depending on what age they are. they follow your example even if they don't mean to. they can't help it (i'm 20 and still following my mom and dad's example) so let them see you praying. let them see you reading your bible. and read with them. Show them how God is active in your life and they won't have a reason to doubt

and if they're old enough to read the bible themselves make a bible trivia game. tell them they have to finish this many chapters within the week and make questions over those chapters. that way both you and your kids are learning the same things. they can come to you and ask you questions over what they don't understand. and whoever wins the trivia game gets a new water gun or a pack of gum (a prize thats worthy of their age) ^_^

We say our prayers before meals and before bed, sing songs about Jesus, and of course go to church.

But I found one of the best ways to teach my daughter is to ask questions. Things like, "Why do we go to church?" and "How come we pray to God."
Her answers help me determine if she's really "getting" it or not.

She's really too young to start thinking of questions on her own, but when she does start asking I will be sooooo glad. My approach is not to ever give her a black and white "this is what you should believe" answer, but to help her see why I believe the way I do and help her come to her own conclusions about what she believes. My daughter is a lot like me and I never took kindly to people telling me what I should think--I want her seek God because that's what she thinks is best, not because I told her she "should."

And if she has doubts along the way--GREAT! I want her to be comfortable talking to me about them so I can encourage her to work through them rather than her being afraid to say she disagrees with me or just believing something out of fear of what I will think. I want her to make her faith her own.
Thanks for your question.

I also asked my kids questions (Like Wounderland) and challenged them to apply the word to their every day lives.
I even learned a few things, because the heart of a child is open to a different perspective.

Good thread...thank you

Hi Annabel

Your son is blessed to have a committed loving Mum like you!

Hi all

Thanks for your contribution. :) I hope it's a thread that parents can visit to share & exchange ideas about spiritual nurturing at home. We never stop learning.

Let me share one fun thing which I am doing with my three girls.

In our world, we are surrounded by heroes - some genuine and some not quite genuine. And the Bible has many heroes of faith too - Abraham, Joseph, Deborah, Esther, Elijah, David.. the list is long. I share to inspire them to use their faith to be successful in this life. Besides emphasizing these men & women's glorious deeds in the Lord, I also share about the mistakes they make along the way and how they humbled themselves to get right with God.

I want them to understand that these heroes of faith are not some outdated or irrelevant people who lived hundreds of years ago. In fact, I want them to recognize that they are like us, living in this world with their own share of challenges, pains, sorrows and joy. And unlike us, they did not have our convenience of today's technologies and since they made it, so can we.

And their feedback is usually interesting and funny - All of them desire to talk to Elijah one day in Heaven. And in their child-like faith, they also want to approach Adam and ask why he sinned! And my eldest replied by saying, 'For Adam, you have to wait because it's going to be a super long queue!'
