It’s basically a Jewish idiom that was given new meaning by Jesus.

Jews in the time of Jesus would sometimes shake the dust off their feet when leaving a Gentile (non-Jewish) town—symbolizing that they were leaving behind impurity. Jesus flips this and tells His disciples to do the same to Jewish towns that reject the Gospel—it’s a radical statement.

A question has been on my mind for a couple of months. On Twitter, some Christians frequently use this phrase to end arguments. It seems wrong to go right to a curse from brother and sisters in Christ that are to forgive 70x7 what are your thoughts? Have you ever used this verse. Thanks

I have on occasions thought of that verse when dealing with atheists with an attitude.. But i think it should never be quoted or used in relation to a internal christian discussion / debate over doctrine.. Yeah one may kick the dust of their feet if dealing with a false Christian refusing to acknowledge the truth of core Christian doctrines.. But it seems to be pointless to actually quote that verse to the other person..

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
