Perhaps it signifies the church era/dispensation per 2Pet. 3:9 and Rom. 11:25-32.
He had to build his house, to ready it for the bride-- and it's taking a long time. Probably a materials shortage or labor problem.
The father (Father God in this instance) of a Jewish bride always readied a room for the Groom & Bride, therefore only he could send the son back for the bride. In my Fathers house are many mansions...
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Jesus clearly is telling his Bride that God is creating a Wedding Chamber so he the Groom can receive the Bride unto himself. Jewish brides & grooms stayed in a room 7 days to consummate the marriage, then cam the "Marriage Feast" 7 days later. Jesus receives us into the heavenly marriage chambers God the Father provided, then Go sends Jesus to gather his bride, we spend 7 years in Heaven, then we return to earth where Armageddon is our Wedding Feast. We get revenge, just as those un der the 5th Seal altar asked for, on our enemies who mocked, murdered and killed us.
The virgins' sleep is symbolic of death and their being awakened signifies the resurrection, when half of them will be saying, 'give us some of your oil,' but the demand for it will trigger a humungous inflation of its price...if the tariffs on it aren't already too exorbitant.
yes, it is because of the father. in jewish culture the groom is not allowed to see his bride or recieve her until the father decides and he decides on what day the groom can go to retrieve his bride. until then the groom and the bride wait and cannot see each other

How did the story help us understand his coming??
because the parable of the ten virgins was told in reference to how the wedding and the bridegroom works Jesus was referencing his coming to the wedding of the lamb and how the jewish culture works with weddings. Hesus was saying that the ten virgins were waiting for when the bridegroom could come and retrieve them

It's commonly supposed that the five unwise girls were faulted for not
bringing along enough oil for their light sources. That may be true, but I
rather suspect that their mistake was scarcely related to the oil and mostly
related to abandoning their posts.
Had they stuck to their guns (so to speak) they could've joined the
procession along with everyone else. They may have endured a measure of
chagrin for letting their lamps go out, but at least they wouldn't miss the
party.
In other words; they let something relatively minor distract their attention
from something far more important; sort of like Nero concerning himself
with trifles while Rome was on fire all 'round the city.
● Matt 25:10-12 . . While they were on their way to buy the oil, the
bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the
wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. Sir!
Sir! --they said-- Open the door for us! But he replied: I tell you the truth, I
don't know you.
The thing is: while the entrance was open, the general public was welcome
to come on in and join the celebration, but once the door was shut and
festivities commenced, late arrivals were permitted inside only if they were
the bridegroom's friends; which emphasizes that the invitation, though
generous, offered a limited window of opportunity which if missed, was lost
forever.
NOTE: It's commonly proposed the oil in the parable of the Ten Virgins
relates to the Holy Spirit, but had the five girls returned with the Holy Spirit,
the groom would've readily allowed them entrance because the Spirit is
depicted in the Bible as a credential validating one's inclusion in Christ's
family circle. (Rom 8:9, 2Cor 1:21-22, Eph 1:13-14, Eph 4:30)

Unless the oil is indicative of something far more important, such as having the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of
God. Showing up to the wedding supper without the proper accoutrements gets one tossed into outer darkness.
oil usually represents annointing this would be the first situation where it would represent the holy spirit which one could interpret as an annointing but usually an annointing is very profound not normal out of the usual kind of thing.
but in context of the wedding and the ten virgins that is the clue as to what the oil represents, what was Jesus referencing in this scenario who was he speaking to why use this type of parable? it is all for a specific reason
To be anointed with oil was a Biblical practice that symbolized God's power, presence, and consecration.
Being born again and indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God is not something I would call a normal or usual
thing/experience. Many who are born again have profound experiences of encountering God in some way
as He draws us with loving kindness, even though we have people claiming they are Christians who wish
to deny this, and try to tell everyone else here that the Holy Spirit is not required in coming to believe,
even though Scripture says the opposite. To be ready for Christ’s return, and attend the wedding supper, a
person must be indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God, born again, have faith in Christ. What is your understanding?
