He talks about the existential risk to mankind. I believe that is the wrong question because it is very unlikely to develop along that path.
Instead what I see happening is that people lose their job, drivers, cashiers, paralegals, etc. At 20% unemployment you have a full on crisis and we could get there in the snap of the fingers. Already programmers, and many other white collar jobs are being lost, as are simple manufacturing jobs. Etc.
So when you have a great depression which is something we could have in 12 months then how do these people get jobs? At that point I suspect they will want people who have neuralink in the brain. All of a sudden those 20% who were unemployed could easily replace another 20% of the workforce with cyborgs.
The AI does not need to be "super intelligent" to replace 20% of the world's workers, it can do that already. When those people have no hope of a job unless they get neuralink then they will. With neuralink, even if it isn't super intelligence it will make a worker more efficient, faster and more capable. But at the same time what AI needs is data in order to train, and neuralink will offer tremendous increase in data to train AI to anticipate how people will think. That is critical to achieving super intelligence.
This, to me, is how they plan to get to superintelligence. They replace 20% of the workers (this has already started), followed by replacing the next 20% with cyborgs (probably begins in a year). After that AI reaches superintelligence in one to two years (so 2028 we may begin to talk of AI becoming superintelligent).
