I have to admit when the tariff's talk was going down one thing I did not get was why Trump was spinning up the Canucks by saying Canada was the 51st state. Every time he did the liberals would move up in the polls and as it is they won the election. However, as the saying goes you just don't know what you don't know.
What I did not know and either Trump directly knew or one of his advisors did. Is that Alberta has had enough. I had no clue of AB51 that pledges allegiance to the American flag each morn and actively seeks to win the hearts and minds of fellow Canucks in Alberta to shed themselves from Canada and truly become the 51st state as they say they have more in common with Montana and Texas than they do eastern Canada.
There are other groups in Alberta as well some that just want independence from Canada and to be their own country. Is more complex than I want to get into for brevity's sake. However, the various different groups that want to break from under Ottawa's control they have all said that when Trump made his comments they saw it as a green light. They had America's backing.
One groups leader said that if they don't win the referendum and get their independence by August of 2026 they will just keep trying. As he mentioned that going door to door and explaining the benefit's of leaving Ottawa behind. He has been able to convince upwards of 90% of the people he talks with to vote yes.
So what will truly happen only time will tell. What Trump is clearly doing and he often mentions energy. A independent Alberta either as their own country and us as a strong trading partner or a state. He is looking as part of making America great again to have a corner on the energy market. One where the US can be the biggest player of production.
The bombing of Iran, I would venture to say also plays into this as the Saudi's want a stable Mid East as much as we do. The price of oil has dropped to below $70 a barrel. With the sanctions in Iran and their current out of control inflation they need oil at $80 to just keep their heads above water. They should be motivated to make some deal that will lift sanctions get a control on their inflation and make a buck at current oil prices or even lower.
I believe the bigger picture in this is for greater American control of production cutting out volatility so that the dollar can be stable and strong. In a way returning us to a gold standard but one that is based on America's control of oil production.
So to his comments to stir up Canada and empower Alberta all I can say is well played Mr. President.
