Doesn't matter what they were called, they were the "progressives" at that time. But I'm not interested in a historical debate which seems to be where this is heading. We'll just have to wait and see what plans for the Smithsonian the Donald has up his sleeve.

A lot of those Confederate monuments were put up during the Jim Crow era, like a giant middle finger to the civil Rights movement.
And everyone who says the civil war was about States rights. States rights to what exactly? The right to own people

We don't need Confederate monuments for the same reason Germany doesn't have any statues of Hitler

well, as a proud southerner, i know the monuments were for-

1. the soldiers who fought and died for southern independence.
2. all the people who wanted southern independence.
3. at the time the monuments were made, a hope for future southern independence.

and, only about 3 to 5% of southerners actually owned slaves,

a little real history for you..:cool:

That's the way it works, my family's lived in Texas since the 1500's and I get told by folks whose country became a nation in 1776 I should go home.

Then you’re way overdue lol. My family was sent to Louisiana by the English/Canadians. I guess intruders will always be trying to justify themselves by erasing the people already being the people of the land.

Getting rid of Confederate Statues is a way for Dems to get rid of their dirty history. Same way they are trying to quietly slide Margret Sanger out the door. Oh, Jim Crow, also Dems.

Yes, we got rid of you Frenchies, well not all of you. Joking, totally joking. But seriously I grew up very close to where this actually happened in Canada. I guess you could more blame the Brits than Canadians for that expulsion. Longfellow wrote a poem about it actually.

It was like when we were Stateside watching the Patriot. Mel Gibson was giving it to the Brits. I was all in on the movie till my sister elbowed me and said " We were loyalists!! Don't you remember seeing the graveyard we passed when we came into the country?!" :eek: Then we moved south and married Patriots, I mean regular people not the sports dudes.

He wants to scrub history that paints slavery in too negative of a light, but he wants to put back up statues to Confederate leaders. Nah, no racial motives there.
 
Here we have it. The whole things seems to be about "woke," whatever that is. He's willing to sacrifice the truth for his political agenda. The US isn't exceptional just because you say it is, Don; it's exceptional because of our ongoing struggle to do better. You can't tell the full American story if you redact everything you don't like. Some things in our past have been horrible, but the fact that we keep going and try to rise above is what makes us exceptional.

And, only slightly more than 5% of slaves sold by Muslim, or Pagan, African slave traders brought to the Western Hemisphere, actually arrived in the United States. The other almost 95% went to the Caribbean, Central, and South America.

Look, slavery is a satanic evil, perpetrated by every race of human beings for 6000 yrs., AND continues in parts of the world TODAY.

Name another Nation/Empire in history that sent it's own soldiers to fight and die in the Nation/Empire that legally had slavery to free slaves. I'll wait....
ONLY the United States of America did that to the sobering tune of over 620,000 men that died, virtually ALL of which didn't own a single slave.

Yet STILL, America receives the LION'S share of blame and castigation over it.

THAT, is the TRUE history I want taught at the Smithsonian.

South Carolina was the first state to secede after making it clear that they would go to war before they would give up their slaves. The rest of the southern states soon followed suit

The fact that only wealthy people owned slaves is kind of a non sequitur, as the Southern economy thrived on Free Labor of slaves and they had no intention of changing this.

Imagine if Elon musk were producing his test was via slave labor, the payoff for the rest of us would be a cheaper product because he doesn't have to pay for labor
