The “great and notable day of the LORD” is referring to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. While any expression in any given connection should yield but one meaning, there does seem to be a similarity in God’s judgments, as Jesus said, “As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man.”

From the New English Translation of the Septuagint, 2014
And it shall be after these things, I will pour out of my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out of my spirit. I will give portents in the sky and on earth: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and notable day of the LORD comes. And it shall be, everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved, because in Mount Sion and in Jerusalem there shall be one who escapes, as the LORD has said, and people who have good news announced to them, whom the LORD called. (Joel 2:28-32 LXX)

And behold I am sending to you Elias the Thesbite before the great and notable day of the LORD comes, who will restore the heart of the father to the son and the heart of a person to his neighbor so that I will not come and utterly strike the land. Remember the law of Moyses my slave, as I commanded him at Choreb with ordinances and statutes for all Israel. (Mal 4:5-6 LXX)

From the King James Version
But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:16-21)

Observations:
The phrase “before the great and notable day of the LORD” is found only twice in the OT
The phrase in Joel and in Malachi is identical, and the LXX is what is quoted in the KJV
In Malachi, the timing is when Elijah appeared, referring to John the Baptist
Joel refers to escapes from Jerusalem, which was in the lead up to 70 AD, Matt 24:16
The apocalyptic language used in Joel is similar to that used in Matthew 24:29, for 70 AD

A description in Joel 2 is quite similar to that found in Matthew 24:21
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been from of old, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations. (Joel 2:2b)

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Matt 24:21)

In years past, it was not uncommon to see all 3 occurrences of “the great and notable day of the LORD” as referring to the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70 AD. So, do ALL the acts or gifts of the Spirit seen before 70 AD continue through all of the New Covenant Dispensation up to today?

Isa 2:11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low.
Isa 2:19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Isa 13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
Zec 14:5 and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
Zec 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Joe 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
Joe 3:15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.
Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

The day of the LORD is when God punishes the world for their sins and iniquities against Him at the battle of Armageddon and ends sin on earth which the heathen do not continue anymore.

And the Lord rules over the earth in which He is acknowledged as authority and no false god and the heathen go up year after year to Jerusalem to worship the LORD.

So it could of not happened in the first century and does not refer to the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. which is when Israel was punished for not accepting Jesus and they were scattered in to the nations.

But the day of the LORD is when Israel is saved from the attack of the world because God turned them to the truth.

Rom 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

There will be a peace treaty in the Middle East and the Gentile nations will cause all Hebrews to go to Israel which God will turn them to the truth.

The world will attack Israel and God will save them.

Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the
LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

The destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. was a punishment upon Israel which they were scattered in to the world and the heathen continued.

The day of the LORD is when God saves Israel and favors them and punishes the world for their sins in which the heathen continue no more in their power.

1Th 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

1Th 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

1Th 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

1Th 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is in the future.

Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Act 2:19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

Act 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

Act 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

This is not the destruction of the temple in 70 A. D.

The last days is when the Spirit is available to the world to receive salvation which started at the day of Pentecost.

The notable day of the Lord happens after the last days when salvation is available to the world.

As long as the Spirit is available for salvation it is still the last days in which the day of the Lord is after that.

As long as the Spirit is available for salvation the day of the Lord will not come.

The last days does not only happen in the first century for the Spirit is still poured out.

When the Spirit is no longer poured out for salvation then the notable day of the Lord will come.

Which is when God punishes the world for their sins which the Bible says the day of the LORD is when He punishes the world for their sins.

But He has not done that yet.

Rev 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

The mystery of God is finished is when the world knows about God which is the day of the LORD.

God has not been revealed to the world yet so the day of the LORD has not come yet.

Which the day of the Lord will start at the resurrection of the saints.

And continue through the wrath of God which He will punish the world for their sins.

Leading up to the battle of Armageddon when Jesus saves Israel.

And continues through the millennial reign when Jesus rules the earth.

Isa 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

And goes to the end of the millennial reign when heaven and earth pass away.

The day of the LORD is a revealing of God to the world which they will know who He is which the mystery of God is finished.

So it could of not happened yet for God is still obscure to the world.

Ask the atheists for there is no atheists when the mystery of God is finished which is the day of the LORD.

Luke 21
20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; 22 because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 25 “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Appears to be two events one for Jerusalem then follows the age of the Gentiles. When the age of the Gentiles
is fulfilled that's the time when Jesus returns.

At Pentecost of 33 C.E., Peter explained that what was occurring was the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy concerning the outpouring of God’s spirit and that this too was due to happen before “the great and illustrious day of the Lord.” That “day of the Lord” came in 70 C.E., when, in fulfillment of his Word, God caused the armies of Rome to execute divine judgment upon the nation that had rejected the Son of God. In a similar way, will be the destruction of this evil world at Armageddon.

I don't see how this part has anything to do with the destruction of the temple. Do you? Is there a record of this happening?

"I will give portents in the sky and on earth: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and notable day of the LORD comes."

"I will give portents in the sky and on earth: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and notable day of the LORD comes."

Josephus wrote that there were unusual signs in the sky before Jerusalem's destruction; there was certainly fire and smoke when the temple and city were burned which would have turned the sun to darkness and also possibly the moon to blood.

Also Josephus mentions other cities in Judea, particularly Galilee, being burned by the Romans during the first war in 66AD.

If you want to see a clear distinction between the end of covenant Israel and the end times.

is fulfilled that's the time when Jesus returns.

Excellent point! Using a harmony of the gospels is very beneficial.

The prophecies of Joel and Malachia were addressed to Israel, the Jews; and Peter in Acts 2 is addressing Jews, while their temple still stood.

Joel 2:27 “ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God”
Mal 4:4 “Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel”
Acts 2:14 “ Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, saying, Ye men of Judaea”

The temple was the major edifice for the Jews in their Old Covenant religion. It was so very important, that Matthew writing with a Jewish emphasis includes in 24:3, the disciples understanding that destruction of the temple was the “end of the world(age)”, and it was the end of the Jewish religion in literal, forceful fashion. In Mark 13:3, Peter is among the 4 apostles specifically mentioned as being stunned at the prophecy. It did indeed happen just as Jesus said:

Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. (Mark 13:30)
Truly I tell you: the present generation will live to see it all. (Mark 13:30) This translation making clear what “generation” meant, and who it applied to, is written in similar words in the NEB, REB, GNB, Weymouth, Williams.

The words “I will shew wonders in the heaven above, And signs on the earth beneath; Blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood,” is apocalyptic language, which is not to be read literally. Apocalyptic language is symbolism as found in the OT and used at times in the NT, especially in Revelation.

The only reasonable and logical view knows that Jesus was not mistaken, and “this generation” in normal language meant that generation to whom he was speaking. To insist that apocalyptic language is meant to be understood literally would cause Jesus to be in error in his timing, or “this generation” is to be twisted out of normal language to support a particular chosen theory of eschatology.

I grew up embracing the Scofield 1917 Edition and had dispensationalism pounded into my brain weekly for years. To me, at that time, dispensational footnotes were held in a high esteem almost like scripture itself. Dispensationalist footnotes were almost as important in my mind as salvation by God’s grace. BUT, I WAS AS JUSTIFIED BY GOD THEN, AS I AM NOW. I WAS JUST AS DETERMINED AND GENUINE IN MY BELIEFS THEN, AS I AM NOW. In a real sense, all of men’s systems of eschatology are theories, not solid gospel truth.

Down through church history the three major views of amillennial, premillennial and postmillennial, concerning Revelation’s 1000 years were seen in the church. Dispensationalism began to take hold in the beginning of the 20th century. The new teaching that there was to be a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, and that the mass conversion of Jews at the end of the age meant establishing an Israel in Palestine with Old Covenant features; held some very unorthodox views. A serious error is the teaching that in that rebuilt temple, there was to again be an altar with animal sacrifices. For years as a dispensationalist I did not realize that insisting on literalism in Ezekiel 40-48, brought back animal sacrifices. That cannot be!

First he says, ‘Sacrifices and offerings, whole-offerings and sin-offerings, you did not desire or delight in,’ although the law prescribes them. Then he adds, ‘Here I am: I have come to do your will.’ He thus abolishes the former to establish the latter. And it is by the will of God that we have been consecrated, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Heb 10:8-10)

The destruction of the Temple was for this fact:

John 4:21-24

Authorized (King James) Version

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

The building destroyed, not rebuilt as man has done. God lives in us and through his children that are willing to trust God to do love and mercy through them also
The Ecclesia, it is not the church, Ecclesia are the "called out ones" as Church means building, a church put in the Bible, which is a lie, as I see the change made for man to have a part in this salvation given them from God Father to them
