the problem is the mind cant tell the difference between real and fake so we need to be careful what we watch.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: Ephesians 5:8

Neither give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:27

Psalms 101:3
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. Psalms 101:3

22 "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22-23

which leads to

"14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them."Matthew 13:14-15
If you don't like them, don't watch them.

Personally I don't like them... Sooooo... I don't watch them.

Dumping on people who do watch them, because they watch them, is very fruitless and frustrating. It's like standing outside an ice cream store and talking loudly about how harmful sugar is. The people who are going there for ice cream don't care. They just want a scoop of triple chocolate, to go.

I mean... You CAN keep badgering people about watching horror movies if you want. It's an open forum and that's not against the rules. But I can tell you right now you're not going to get anywhere.

I'm not debating whether it is detrimental. I am positing that you are wasting your time preaching at people that it is detrimental. People who like it are not going to stop watching it just because you berate them.

I understand what you’re saying. My intent isn’t to preach or berate anyone. I’m simply pointing out the spiritual cause and effect—like how sowing certain things into our minds and hearts produces certain outcomes.

I know what you are saying and agree to a point. I think some have a hard time seperating reality from make believe and parents especially should monitor what movies kids watch and what games they play.

It has a stronger negative effect on children, but exposure to violent media impacts adults as well Studies show that when we watch violent content, the brain doesn’t always separate it from reality. That’s why people can feel fear or stress from something that isn’t really happening. Over time, this has an effect. It makes people less sensitive to real suffering that's desensitization. It also raises aggression, increases risky behavior, and in kids especially it can weaken memory and attention and promotes violent responses.

Physically, our bodies respond to horror the same way they would to a real threat—higher blood pressure, stress hormones, fear, anxiety that can linger even after the movie ends. Horror and violent media don’t just numb us spiritually by normalizing evil, they harm us mentally and physically too. Truth is, nothing good is planted by filling your mind with fear and violence. And if sowing seeds produces a harvest, then what kind of harvest do you think this kind of media brings? You could even call it Satan’s seeds, planted in this generation.

Reality Threshold in the Brain: The brain evaluates incoming sensory signals against a "reality threshold." If a mental image or an external visual signal is vivid enough, the brain may interpret it as real, even if it is imagined or fictional.

Emotional Immersion: When watching highly engaging or realistic media (like horror or reality TV), the brain activates similar regions as if the events were happening in real life, leading to emotional responses as if they were real.

Seeing-is-Believing Heuristic: People often apply a "seeing-is-believing" approach, assuming the content they see is authentic or factual, which makes them susceptible to manipulated or fictionalized media like deepfakes or sensationalized TV.

Difficulty Detecting Fake Content: Research shows that even when aware of fakery, individuals often cannot reliably detect fake or manipulated videos, and are biased toward accepting them as real.

Impact on Children and Vulnerable Groups: Younger viewers or those with certain mental health conditions can be especially vulnerable to mixing fiction and reality, leading to distress, fear, and confusion.

Media Priming: What people watch influences their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors more than they realize because media primes the brain with accessible memories and emotions linked to the content.

According to social cognitive theory and cultivation theory (Bandura, 1986, 2001), repeated exposure to television influences viewers' construction of reality. Heavy viewers may come to see TV portrayals as authentic states of human affairs, which can affect their attitudes, perceptions, and behavior (Margaret Bennett, 2015).

Emotional responses to fiction can be strong, sometimes even stronger than real-life documentary viewing, causing viewers to internalize and react to scenarios as if they were true (Pouliot & Cowen, 2007).

Perceived realism mediates how much influence a viewer gains from media content, including attitudes toward risky behavior and social roles (Ward & Carlson, 2013).

Desensitization: Repeated exposure to violent images can reduce emotional distress and empathy for real-world violence, making viewers less sensitive to aggression and suffering. (Bushman & Huesmann, 2001) (Bushman, Huesmann 2006) (Bushman & Anderson 2009) (Krahe et al. 2011)
See: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4393354/

Increased Aggression and Risky Behavior: Viewing violent media is linked to higher levels of aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, especially in children and adolescents. It can impair behavioral inhibition and decision-making, increasing the likelihood of risky actions. (Lillard et al., 2015).
See: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10262287/

Physiological Stress Responses: Violent and horror scenes can provoke elevated blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones, sometimes causing long-term psychological and physiological effects.(Pouliot & Cowen, 2007)
See: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4393354/

Fear and Anxiety: Horror movies in particular trigger fear responses, which can cause nausea, hyperarousal, and lingering anxiety even after viewing.(University of Michigan study, 2016)
See: https://record.umich.edu/articles/long-term-fright-reactions-extend-beyond-scary-movies-tv-shows/

Cognitive Impact: Continuous exposure to violent media can weaken attention, memory, and executive functions, especially in developing brains of children and adolescents.(Kronenberger et al., 2005)

I will ask God to help ween me off it. He helped me to stop other sinful habits, so He can probably help me with this as well! I think some people aren't willing to try and stop because they can't imagine not stopping the habitual sin and/or think they won't be able to find something godly and satisfying to do to replace it.

I'm not sure how long this will take because I have two other sinful habits that the Holy Spirit is helping me to break right now.

🙏

I think Horror movies are problematic for us as Christians and I use to watch the Alien films, The Thing, and etc. You can feel if the Holy Spirit is allowed to show you that there is darkness to them and the morose, macabre, and mutilation of God’s Image, us humans (Genesis 1:27) is not good for us to watch.

I went to see the Exorcist the first night it played.... it was (and still is) about as realistic as you could imagine.... I still will get chills if I hear a recording of that voice....

Do I believe that Satan can drop down and possess someone against their will, at any time? Nope. I am firmly grounded in my belief that we belong to Jesus.... "greater is he that is in me, than he who is in the world".....

Do I think that weak-minded people could be affected by seeing that stuff? Yes, I do.
I believe that they can be affected by ANYTHING they see.... CNN, Jerry Springer, soap operas, video games, rap music, heck, country music....

I also saw it when it was in theaters. There was a rumor a catholic priest had a heart attack watching it. I figure the producers started the rumor to hype the movie.

No, I don't. I play a game where you kill corrupted lords(leaders who have become monsters) in order to become the new one and either end the world or continue it(and become a monster after however long). I have not become more or less violent. I don't think our content changes us as much as we choose our content based off of who we are. I play games, I would never play a porn game or a game that is pure violence. I know people who have played both who aren't violent, though porn for sure is a sin. We seek out what we desire, I do not believe these things change us to make us more---whatever. I do however think that because of what's already in our hearts, we seek out certain things which are bad and in turn become more insensitive towards those things and seek more of them. That is basically the root of addiction.

Violent people may play violent games, non violent people may play games with violence.

People who watch scary movies may just do so to enjoy them, some murderers may watch them to get ideas, though I'm sure they would go elsewhere. It's all about what's in the heart, and why one might enjoy that movie. Either way, I do not think they shape us, as much as we desire and our own desires shape us.

Like sex scenes in movies don't make me perverted, I honestly get scared...like traumatized... I'm a big baby and I have never watched such things. I think this sensitivity is good, others may argue for whatever reason, but the point is that no amount of watching those things would change me because inwardly they disturb me greatly. I feel like they are a violation of what I should be seeing. I watch for a minute to see if there's a significance , and if its just porn-y I most certainly look away or change the movie depending on the frequency.
