Several lessons.
1. It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
The church is not supposed to be a great tree with fowls lodging in its branches. We are supposed to be a small herb that is good for food. When the Lord sowed the seed for the church it was the least, the smallest and yet it has grown into a monstrosity like the Catholic church with its Cathedrals and thousands of fowl birds lodged in its branches.
2. And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
However, if you are right with the Lord, if you have faith as a grain of mustard, less than the least like the Apostle Paul said of himself, then you can pray that the corruption of the world to be uprooted and cast into the sea and since you are fully trusting in the Lord Jesus who is Lord of All to do this, and not in your own strength, in your own political influence, it should obey you, not because of who you are but because of Jesus Christ, your Lord, who you are one with. This verse is in Luke and is spoken to the church that is raptured prior to the tribulation. Prior to the tribulation the corruption in the world is like a Sycamine tree.
3. And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
This word is spoken in Matthew and refers to the Jews who at the end of the tribulation will be battling all the nations who have all gathered together at Armageddon. They will be like a mountain of corruption. They start the age out unable to cast out a demon from an epileptic boy and they finish the age saying unto all the nations assembled against them to be taken up and cast into the sea and nothing shall be impossible to them.
4. This of course gives us the fourth lesson which is that the point is not how you start the race, it is how you finish it. You can start out as less than the least but due to sanctification and transformation of the Holy Spirit you can be transformed into someone who is one with the Lord Jesus and when you pray it is done. This is our goal. Some Christians emphasize the first five minutes of the Christian life when someone prays, confesses their sins, and is washed by the blood of Jesus. They are forgiven, they are redeemed and they are freed from the slavery of sin. That is a great five minutes, but the Christian life also includes the fifty years after those five minutes where you are transformed into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ.
Think about it this humble man who began teaching twelve men . This grew into a world wide Faith where even today people find rest and peace and hope in the same gospel .
Like a small seed Christianity has grown nto a far reaching place of refuge for the souls of lost sinners to come home to .
