There is this show, I think it is on tlc, it is about this man and his four wives. It has been on a couple of seasons now........and I wonder a few things. Does this show being on air mean that we have lost the debate on whether or not it is okay to be homosexual? In other words has the media decided it is time to try de-sensitize us to another taboo? Another quandry I have is I have seen this family go places and women running up the the husband wanting to join in on this by being another of his wives. What woman would want to share like that I wonder? How many men out there would really want to deal with that sea of raging hormones? I'm curious to see what my sisters and brothers out there think of this phenomena.

Lets leave aside the fact that God says ONE Wife for the moment. I think they are all nuts. I'd find it hard enough dealing with one wife, not to mention the fact that you'd end up playing favorites which isn't right, and the women would just end up fighting and competing for position. It would end up being complete anarchy. Just look at what happened with David, Solomon, Jacob. It was a nightmare for all of them, and Solomon was lead astray by his numerous wives.

I think its proverbs that says something about being happy with the wife of your youth. Then there is somewhere else that says a husband is to leave father and mother and cleave unto his wife, and there are dozens of passages where it says wife.

Wife singular!!!!!!!!!! Anything else is anarchy and God is order not chaos!

That's just my thoughts anyhow

I think back then, wives were completely submissive. Not like today where wives and husbands are seen as equals.

If Solomon told one of his wives to go wash the horses, she wouldn't say to him, "Is that all I am to you? A horse-washer?! You can go wash your own horse, mister!"
:D

Yeah, she would say, "Ok, I'll wash the horse for you if you worship Baal with me."

And Solomon would say/did say, "Ok, deal."

Or she could say, "..if you worship Ikea with me this afternoon." (The god of attractive, affordable furniture) :)

Proverbs 21:9

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

Proverbs 27:15

A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike;

Proverbs 21:19

It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.

Proverbs 25:24

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

Yikes. That's only one wife!

Great! this has been a pretty lively chat so far! Yay! Some o' you guyses is arfully funny. :) Still this being on t.v. does bug me. I don't want to see that kind of thing shown as attractive or ok. Plus they talk about thier religion which makes me worry people will be lead astray spiritually if attracted to this lifestyle.

You know, I can see your concern but at the same time I don't think I would consider it sinful. Through the OT God shows us this concept of wanting a one-on-one relationship between us and HIM. The Israelites had to beg God just to get a leader, because God wanted to be their only leader. In the NT, we see that it can be beneficial to never marry, but also that it is sometimes better to marry than not to.

I guess my point is simply that it seems in the case of one wife (or no wife) God is presenting a recommendation. His strong desire, to make things easier for us, but I don't think that I can consider the act of polygamy in itself a sin. 'Sins' are really actions that go against love. I don't know this mans, or any mans, reason to marry multiple women, but I don't think entering into such a relationship is sin. If he is truly capable of loving each of His wives with the love of God, I see no problem at all. The problem comes with man's inability to love perfectly. So, he is presented with many more opportunities to sin.

As for the discussion of their religion, it's almost impossible these days to avoid talk of other religions. If you stay home and avoid all sorts of media you might be able to accomplish it. I wouldn't desire a polygamist relationship, then again I also wouldn't desire to be single for the rest of my life. To me it seems like a lifestyle choice that may lead to sin, but so could living single or marrying one wife.

1 Sam 12:8
New International Version (NIV)
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

God wasn't angry because he took another wife, but because he took another man's wife (not to mention the killing and adultery).

Also, solomon wasn't condemned for having more than one wife... it was because his wives brought their gods with them.... reckon it'd maybe be ok if they were all Godly women?? ;)

hahaha sounds like God didnt have too many problems with Solomon having of wives in the old testament... just foreign wives with different gods..

But of course... the new testament is the word now right? poo to the old testament with it's complete lack of relevance to the New Testament and our these days!... Wait a minute... (a warm glass of satire anyone) :p

Sure, 1 Tim 3:12 (The only place in the NT I hear)
"A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well."
This is written to timothy where he was... never repeated, and only regarding 'deacons'...

Apart from 'the law of the land' that says I can't have more than one wife these days.... and of course the lunacy of trying to understand more than one woman absolutely *wink*.... sounds having more than one wife is ok......... :D hahaha.. am I saying you should have more than one wife?? Probably best to act as though you will be a 'deacon' in the least... still... interesting food for thought :)

(i know i know, naughty daniel)

I still don't beleive God was pleased with them getting more wives. God knew the trouble that would be given to them when getting more wives, as well as there are verses where lots of bad things happened to them 'cause of making those choices they did. God created one man and one woman, this is the way He sees it most fit.

Humans during those times in the bible is a lot of the same as how they are today; When they keep on feeding and listening to the bad sinful thoughts as well as giving into it into actions, they are already cursed by it and trouble comes their way. Because as today; They opened up for more sin to come into their lives. Does this pleased God in any way? No. And it still does not pleases God. Yet, He let us go through it whenever we make a foolish or bad decision, and many have to learn the hard way. Same as for many of those in the time of the bible.
