I think most people are tribal.
However, I identify with believers living today as well as those I've never met, in the Bible and around the world. I can appreciate individuals who have trained hard to develope athletic skills. That's why I posted that thread, Extreme Sports.....
I just don't follow sports teams or invest much time watching a game.
What about you?

At the heart of sport is competition. The first being to start a competition was Satan. Christians need to be very careful they don't get sucked in. I got obsessed with table tennis and I began to get aggressive. I started practicing and training more and it was taking over my life outside of work. The Lord told me to quit, and I did. Decades later, I started playing again, not often and mostly with my wife. We don't keep score. It's just a bit of fun.

Some of the voices you hear shouting at games are in fact demons. Ordinary people can turn violent and destructive, all in the name of sport. Be diligent to guard your heart.

I'm really not into professional sports at all... I like to watch Patrick Mahomes play, because he was from Texas Tech, but that's about all.
I do try to keep up with a very few college sports teams, and our local high school team, but nobody would ever consider me a "fan"....
I have too many other hobbies and things to do, to waste time "following" sports.

Like the guy said.... I don't know why professional athletes think that their opinions matter.... if I wanted opinions from someone that chases a ball, I'll just ask my dog....

Absolutely! Nowt wrong with sports, it's fans who get tribal about individuals and teams who practise them, instead of just appreciating the skill involved.

Hmm... I dunno.

Some of the facts in that video were technically accurate. But they were presented with a definite bias, almost like mainstream news channels "reporting" on an incident but slanting the report the way the station wants.

I'd bet my next three paychecks the author was not a sports fan.

I'd also be curious to see what kind of video a sports fan would make from the same data.

Okay I went and took a shower, got dressed, then knocked a few people unconscious in a video game, and while I did all that I was thinking about the words I need to express what I don't like about that video.

The author does the same thing he says sports fans do.

He might be right about why sports fans do that. I think he is. It sounds right. It aligns perfectly with my own observations.

But...

He presents it in a way that makes it clear he considers non-sports fans to be intellectually superior to sports fans. He tries very hard to make all us non-sports fans feel like we are better than them. So he uses this video to chase the exact same feeling of "I'm winning!" that he says sports fans are chasing.

I gotta say, if feeling like you're winning is the whole objective of the video, it's a piss-poor substitute. Sports fans get games all the time. We only get this one "you're better than they are" video. Sports fans can relive that feeling of their team winning over and over when they talk to their friends about it. Try discussing this video at w*rk next Monday and see what kind of reaction you get. If we want to feel like we're winning, sports fans have it MUCH better than we non-sports fans who get really into this video.

Side note: I have long felt like a lot of human behavior is for the sake of capturing the feeling of "I'm winning!" I don't think I talk about it THAT much, that I have singlehandedly caused it to be embedded in modern language all over the world. So I guess other people have noticed it too.

It seems like Paul the Apostle enjoyed sports too. That was probably popular with Greek Helenization and the Roman coliseums of the day. He kept it in perspective though, used the sports analogies and focused on planting churches.

As a teenager I was bullied by jocks and as a young man attacked by basketball and football players. Those experiences helped me commit to personal training in Combat Arts. The Lord used that to help me with self discipline, and delivered me through some of the most challenging experiences.
I have much to be grateful for.
He has delivered me from certain death many times. Some sports remind me of those times and how the Lord showed His mercy.

I was into sports when I was a kid because we didn't have video games or anything much more than matchbox cars, legos and tinkertoy so playtime was me and my friends playing football or softball or hockey or riding our bikes. I played football for my high school but after high school I lost interest when I realized that a lot of these pro athletes (not all, but many) were just dumb jocks who made a lot of money. There was even a morning radio segment everyday on the most popular radio station out here called "The athlete arrest of the day" and everyday they had an arrest to report on. I don't watch sports anymore but sometimes I'll tune into a football game for a few minutes because I just like football.
