I always worry when I hear from another female friend of mine who say theyve found a nice guy and theyre happily dating them. Nothing wrong about that of course its the next bit they say. I ask them, what church do they go to? And the reply answer is always 'Oh he doesnt go.' The backup reason is either he doesnt 'like' churches and instead his church is himself and his hipster christian music and ideas OR he says he believes in 'God' but leaves it at that. Granted there are far too many feminised churches for men to feel comfortable in, the church is painted in pastel, the majority of the pastoral leadership may be women and the worship music sounds like you're going to prom with Jesus. In American churches there is commonly 60% women and 40% men. Not a lot of biblical masculine inspiration I know.

But going to church and having fellowship in the form of singing, corporate prayer, listening to preaching, getting to know one another and new people, its not a recommendation its a mandate.
Look at Jesus, from a small town from blue collar parents with a out of date tiny synagogue which no priest wanted to volunteer in. I bet he heard a few awful sermons in his time. He still went. He dealt with a lot of neighbors in the congregation whispering about him. His family didn't agree with him in church. He still went. He travelled to Jeruselem every year to learn and eventually teach and preach in the most corrupt temple in his day. He still went. What does that say? Despite the sin in church he still fought to help it improve.
Today, the most common complaint I hear about christians is actually against the church, the corporate body of christ. "Theyre a bunch of hypocrites," Christians and athiests alike say.
Only Jesus was perfect so why should we be surprised when tens and hundreds of sinners come together every Sunday and accidentally sin against each other?
There is an upside. Church is where you're with people who are there the same reason you are - to show your love for Jesus. You meet people who take the bible seriously and themselves lightly. You meet people who rebuke you for your sin in love and encourage and support you in your times of hard seasons. You meet leaders you want to look up to. You're in an environment where your surrounded by people of all ages and you learn to care for babies and children and respect and adher to the wisdom of the elderly.

Going to church doesn't make you a christian like being in a garage doesnt make you a car. But when you're around that social and spiritual environment and likeminded people you allow yourself to be positively influenced.

Heres why I worry about men who don't go to church.

  • No holy spirit driven love and passion for the body of Christ. Claiming yourself and your ipod to be 'church' is like seeing a walking hand (like from The Adams Family') it looks rediculous, klutzy and incomplete. You run high risk of favouring certain topics and books of the bible over others. You allow a foothold for Satan by not allowing godly men to teach you. You convince yourself that you can teach yourself better than your pastor. Pride and arrogance is a scary and deadly combination in a man. You also miss out of helpful resources that is otherwise provided at church.
  • Lack of spiritual commitment. Being in fellowship with other sinners (despite all being in love with Jesus) is HARD work. You hurt others and they will hurt you. The 12 Apostles was the weirdest collection of men with different gifts and ideas and upbringing. You don't think they argued? Paul and Peter definitely did. But they always drove for forgiveness and reconciliation and worked incrediably hard and openly DIED for God.
  • Lack of accountability. In church you hear a message that you didnt plan. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit presses the pastor to preach on something that looks at conviction of sin that the whole church is having trouble with. What happens to the bloke who didnt bother to turn up and is dealing with that sin? It goes unchecked and unrebuked.
In Ephesians it says that at the head of every man is Christ. If a guy is in a relationship or marriage and isnt in an environment (church) that mentors, leads, rebukes and encourages men it shows his incapability to put Jesus first, and if Jesus isnt first, how can his gf or wife trust him to lead like Christ? How can she trust him to train their children in their scripture, to discern truthful teaching, to read relevant and useful books? To one day lead other men in Christ? Can she trust that when he stands before God at his death, Jesus would say 'Well done, good and faithful servant'?
Ladies.. Its easy to submit to a man who places Jesus at his head. If he honours the body of Christ, he will honour you. If he pursues the kingdom of God on earth he will encourage you to pursue the same thing. If he has a servant heart to those in church he will have a servant heart for you. If he joyfully reads his bible your children they will follow in his lead. If he humbly asks for forgiveness and is repentant in public, how much more will he willingly do the same with you in private?

If a man wants to date you and says he is a Christian but doesnt go to church and shows no interest in it, take the level of their faith with a grain of salt and carry on looking. As a precious daughter of God you deserve the best man that God has planned for you. God created church community for a very good purpose. He wants us love and learn with one another not be in isolation. Men who want to be loving sacrificial spiritual leaders do not achieve anything alone. Encourage them to grow and meet other christian men but don't date them.

Well said, but not right thing for everyone. Nowhere in scripture does it say going to church or not going to church is a sin. The relationship you have with the Lord is yours, and, YES, the fellowship with the body of Christ is a GREAT thing but don't think for a minute, or, even a second, that not going to church is a SIN. It is not.

Following Him and not letting Satan's influence sway you, through any guilt association, including someone telling you. 'You should go to church or you're sinning,' is what being a Christian is ALL about.

Scripture: I am the Way, the Truth, the Life, no man comes to the Father but by me.

The Lord leads. But, again, very well said, and, admittedly, my fondest and most changing experiences have come from church but that is not important in the grand scheme of things. Religion, denominations, even rulers (God ruled the Israelites and they demanded a ruler so they were given slave-driver Saul) are NOT what God truly intendd for humans when He made us.

Yes not going to church is not a sin. That is not the issue here or the reason for this post, I have seen men like this, in fact have been this man myself and have learned that trying to be a man of God without the support of other Godly men and teaching is not truly possible. Without the church your boundaries fail, not all at once, but bit by bit you cave to the pressure of this world and your prayer life and biblical study slowly disappears. The fellowship of others of like mind/beliefs is needed and beneficial, don't get me wrong, your own walk (prayer, bible study, worship) is the most important, but without support we tend to stumble.

I enjoyed your post, CanadaNZ, and agree with most of it. I have to say that your "going to the prom with Jesus" comment about the music truly made me laugh out loud.

Perhaps the very reason churches seem to be so feminine is exactly because of the lack of men attending and leaving the decision making to the women. It would be awesome to see that change. Churches, families and the Body of Christ as a whole would be far stronger if more men actively participated. Thank you.

You say you 'worry' about guys not going to church, Can, and, that, to me, is not your worry. Further, in this above post you're again using imperative words like being man of God without church 'not truly possible' and 'you cave' to pressurres of this world and 'is needed.'

Truth is, fellowship with others in church (or anywhere) is not needed and certainly it is not for everyone, but , yes, some of your unimperative words are very true of the Truths of scripture like, 'we tend to stumble' without support, and, CanNZ, you say, fellowship of Christian others is 'beneficial.'

Can, I am praying I don't speak here with false teaching, as I would NEVER say things to hinder a fence-straddled thinking should I make the commitment to Christ as church is a GREAT WAY (probably the greatest) to get to know Christ inimateky, personally, but it is NOT the only way . The Lord leads . And, ultimately, God wants an inimate relationship with us and everything else He just may NEVER have you, including going to church. Heaven is what this life is all about, this life is ALL about being out of your body and with Christ, as Paul days in Corinthians, and, condemning others lifestyles with no church while you are having to go to state with Christ is a worry not of yours but Christ's . That is, IF He wants no church going in a Christian's life to be a worry. So, be like Bobby McFerrin, so to speak, don't worry about others, worry about yourself (your Walk) , and, yiu will not just be happy either, your joy will be full :)

I truly believe you need both, take a good read through 1& 2 Timothy and tell me that Paul is not supporting church fellowship. Yes individual relationship(church) with Jesus is the most important and primary way we learn, but I have seen so many people leave the church claiming they don't need it and then seeing their walk with God erode and fall apart. This has happened to everyone I have know who has done this. I once believed as you seem to, but between the collapse of my own faith and walk with Christ without the support of a christian family and countless others around me through my life, I have been a firm advocate for finding a christian family to live life with, to study the Word with, to correct and discipline with. It may not be perfect, but IT IS beneficial.

You sure seem to have a grip on why men don't go to church; you know,

Yaright, this is the wrong way to respond, Jesus would not responde this way would he?

CanNZ, you speak Truth and I truly believe what you say that church is important, beneficial, to a Christian's life. It is ! But, again, using imperative words housed around your belief satements of what it takes to be a Christian is not what God would say to do. It is something Satan would do, but not God :) God is Love.
Just because you've seen other Christians Walk awaybfrom church and, hence, Walk.away from God does not mean every Christian that walks does not stay firm in the faith, even IF you have 100 friend examples of their crumbling after leaving the fellowship of church and ZERO examples of success-leaving-church-friends . Nope, that doesn't change the fact that their can be Godly men out there firm following God while not going to church.

Again, your thread is with a lot if great said things, just don't blanket statement that without church a man of God will fail.

God bless :)

I realize now that I missed the most important point. . .Look at 1 Timothy, chapters 2 and 3. God has called men to be the leaders of His Church. If a man is not going to church or always changing churches cause he can't find the right one, rebuke him, he as a man of God has a responsibility to God and to the church to lead, by example or literally. If he has a problem with a church, tell him to stand up and be counted and work for change. If a church has a strong male leadership already, see if you can slot in or look for a church that needs more men and go there. God has loved us first, it isn't enough to just believe (yes that much does save us), we need to respond. If you truly love God you will be about the work He has called you to do. This is a call to all the men who love God -- Don't wish the church was different. . .STEP UP, WORK, LEAD AND BE WILLING TO BE LED BY OTHER CHRISTIAN MEN.

God Bless

-----CanNZ: If a man is not going to church or he can't find the right one, rebuke him.

CanNZ , you're heart means well, the Lord leads, and, therefore, I can tell, but please tell me where in scripture this statement of imperity and self-righteousness exists???

I will tell you where. Nowhere. God just does not judge in that way, no way, no how, and, further, no what, when, why, and, of course, where about it.

------
I Timothy 2 and 3 states ways that a man should act if choosing a bishop's life, and, as Holy Spirit-breathed (inspired) scripture goes, thiese two chapters work well to explain the inductive awesomeness of studying scripture for a bishop (pastor).

But, again, your saying that men NEED to go to church is imperative wording, God ONLY knows what we need individually, as I've said in other threads God's relationship witheach and every one of His sheep (believers in Him) is PERSONAL. So, your rebuking men for not going to church is not (oh no, a double negative, lol) what God would tell you to worry about . Worry about you and your walk with God and let God worry about all the men that are men of God but not attending a church. It is just our place to judge, CanNZ, period.

And, I pray the Lord led every word I said here because I want you to encourage men to go to church, that is a good thing. That is a God thing, but your adding the rebuking is another thing, vdare I say whose thing THAT is.....Satan's. :(

God bless you, CanNZ, for your firm faith and steadfast belief in our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, keep on rocking and talking for His sake and not your own and you will be greatly blessed. :)

EXCELLENT topic!

Yes, I agree that it is very important for a man to go to church. I have heard the excuse a LOT that the person thinks church people are hypocrites, or that there are no good churches in the area, etc. But in reality, they've tried like one or two, or maybe even dozens, but they have lefts dozens of churches un-tried, and just assume that none of them would work out. And really, they just don't go to church because they don't want to.

Although, some men have been drastically turned off of church because at many churches, you essentially go, hear a message, worship, and leave. And yeah, you can easily do that on your own. You can find WAY better worship on Youtube, and hear WAY better sermons through a podcast. But what people often miss is that the Bible doesn't say to go to church to worship OR to hear a message, but to have fellowship with other believers. Many people go to the service and think that they have "done church". But really, they are missing out on SO MUCH by not joining in on small group Bible studies and serving in the church's various ministries, where you actually meet and bond with other believers. Now there are churches that don't have ministries like that, and that is a crime. If a church doesn't have small groups or places where anyone can serve, I think that church needs to change or be shut down.

So yeah, while a man can still technically be a Christian without going to church, he isn't practicing being a Christian.

you make a blanket statement about men, and the tell me not to make a blanket statement? Yours is the way of the churches of men HYPOCRITE

CanadaNZ, I agree with your sentiments concerning church attendance. While I agree that not attending church, in and of itself, is not a sin, I personally feel that lack of desire to fellowship regularly with an established body of believers is directly reflective of your walk with God. And that is my own opinion, drawn from years of seeing believers fall into the trap of "I can be a committed Christian and not attend church". I've not seen it work yet!

Amen, church is more than sunday service, it is the people of God coming together to worship, learn and grow.

Agreed. Just don't make a judgment statement that a man cannot be a man of God without going to church because that is smothering him and God will not like it. Let God do the rebuking.

Yaright, what blanket statement did I make?

Also, explain what you mean by 'hypocrite.' Thanks, God bless.

Yes it is sad to know few of them doesn't care about their partners Christian act, as long as they have a partner is their concern...
