Why does God allow divorce for infidelity if in other verses he condems divorce? If a spouse cheats, how do you know if you should stay or go?

"(When God brought Eve to Adam, He said "For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife and the two shall become one flesh." Genesis 2:24. God would later say, "I hate divorce."

I understand that the word clearly indicates - Divorce is out! However in human sinful terms Moses has given us a way out regarding infidelity. Because infidelity crushes the spirit of trust, and loving relationships are built on trust! Actually God never said we may divorce due to infidelity it was Moses! Matthew 19:7

A clear command from God regarding divorce was: -

"Now, for those who are married I have a command, not just a suggestion. And it is not a command from me, for this is what the Lord himself has said: a wife must not leave her husband. But if she is separated from him, let her remain single or else go back to him. And the husband must not divorce his wife. - 1 Corinthians 7:10,11

It is explained in the next verse Matthew 19: 8 - Anyone who divorces, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another commits adultery . So I understand - if you get divorced on the grounds of unfaithfulness and remarry it is (not adultery) any other reason will lead to adultery!

My view of it is that God permits it for only one reason, but would rather it not happen.

"Why does God allow divorce for infidelity if in other verses he condems divorce?" I agree with the above posts, I have heard there are 4 reasons for divorse 1. adultery, 2 abuse, 3 addictions, and 4 abandonment. If someone insists on leaving you can't make them stay.

If a spouse cheats, how do you know if you should stay or go? If if is a one night stand, and the part confessies, asks forgiveness and truly repents, perhaps one could allow the marriage to be restored. If there is constant cheating, and done in secret, where someone can't be trusted, the case is stronger for not allowing the marriage to be restore. Between those extremes, the case is weaker.
Likewise.

Matthew 19 -
1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

Adultery breaks the vow of holy matrimony (the vow to be faithful, cleave only unto your spouse) and separates what was joined by God.

However, you do not have to leave your spouse if they commit adultery. God does hate divorce, so if you can work it out at all and are not in danger of any kind, I would encourage both husband and wife to do so prayerfully, especially if you have children. Divorce is a no win situation for anyone.

Excellent adivce, in my opinion. There is a ministry especially aimed at couples who are trying to recover from adultery. It is called "Hope & Healing" Ministries; founded and run by Gary and Mona Shriver. Their telephone number is (209)667-5012. Their e-mail address is [email protected].

I would urge anyone who is facing this crisis in their marriage to contact Gary and Mona. They know the pitfalls from first-hand experience, and might be able to offer advice to get couples through their issues.

God bless.

thank you for the enlightening through the words of God..I am almost at the brink of jut giving up with my marriage of 11 years due to my husbands rather unforgiving heart and harsh remarks. I keep telling myself i will have to forgive and i have been but for how long..now im turning to someone i dont desire to be around with.
