Anyone who would like to discuss 'multiple personality disorder' or 'dissociative identity disorder' please respond to this post. I need to learn as much as I can about the condition because I believe Our Lord identified that condition when He spoke to the folks in His hometown synagogue saying;
(Isaiah 61:1) "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD anointed me To bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners;

For some 20 years I was a Licensed Mental Health Counselor [who is also a believer in Jesus]. I have had much experience with people who I believe genuinely have DID as well as those who THINK they do not but in reality do not or else have some related condition. It is much harder to get an accurate diagnosis in cases of lower spectrum dissociation which often confuses those of us in the mental health field. Once, I took on a client who said she had DID but, after a time, I came to the conclusion that she did not. One reason is that she was INTO the disorder and hung out with other "groupies" on the internet. People who really have DID are terrified to reveal their condition to others. This makes sense when you consider that DID is all about concealment and hiding.

Another professionals have to sort through is the degree to which an individual dissociates. In some people, the parts are more or less separated than others. There is a matrix based on the level of trauma the person has experienced vs their ability to dissociate.
Neurologically, I conceptualize DID as result of the fact that the human brain is not a single unitary system but consists of multiple sub-systems each of which can operate more or less independently when the stress becomes high enough. When a person is traumatized (which happens when they have experienced some stressor has have exceeded their ability to process it. Young children (especially 4-5 year olds) who have less resilience, and a less developed sense of identity and a less logical way of thinking tend to fragment more than others. Treating such individuals requires a lot of time, close involvement and commitment to the process as well as a lot of prayer. I have seen many abandon the process when it gets too intense. In my experience, such a client is very likely not to continue in the process.

As to the issue of demonic possession, we cannot discern according to outward appearances. Many things that look like demons may not be. In my experience, believer who is attuned to the Spirit can sense the presence of demons who, after all, are spiritual entities (who formerly were angels). I have read of many accounts of humans who encountering an angel of God will fall on their face.
I have felt strange sensations when I was about to open a door and go into a house where a professed witch lived. I did not know what I was doing back then. I just wanted to help. However, as soon as I was in proximity of the house I felt something strange and evil. Humans who have DID have never impressed me that way. They come across as humans albeit humans who are bound and who have the human emotions consistent with their suffering. I never mistook them for a demons. Anyway, take that for what it is worth.

To understand DID I must have a practical, working knowledge of the spiritual realm. I'm afraid I understand so little about the spiritual realm. Jesus referred to this when he said,
“If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?” John 3:12

We who are followers of Jesus Christ understand that there is a very real spiritual world. The core is hearing voices from the spiritual realm, not from their 'head'. Unfortunately, we usually think of the spiritual world it as being a way off up 'yonder somewhere. Jesus tells us clearly that the spiritual world in all around us when he says in Luke 17:20-21:
“When asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God will not come with observable signs. Nor will people say, ‘Look, here it is,’ or ‘There it is.’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

I do know that the spiritual realm is home to both good and evil spirits. While neither the core nor the alters are demonic in nature, they can, just as we can, allow evil to enter them and influence certain behaviors. I refer to Matthew 12:43-45.

I guess I haven't thought about this too much because it seemed to evil to me. But I did appreciate your breakdown. My initial thinking was that the alters were all somehow demonic or separate from the actual core/spirit. Is this something you have or think you have ruled out?

I do think the voices schizophrenics hear are demonic, largely because of what the voices say.

Alters as they are ordinarily understood are not demons which are entities which possess a mind as well as emotions yet do not have physical form. Alters are dissociated sub-systems of the personality which form in order to deal with trauma which were the person. We should never confuse alters with demons since this hinders the healing and restoration of the person. We cannot 'cast out' alters since they are wounded parts of a persons personality

From what you have said, it seems that you have little experience with Schizophrenia. Most research has found that the "voices" they are are sub-vocalizations which sound real only because the person's executive system is unable to locate the or discern the voice.

If "most researchers" assert that "the "voices" are sub-vocalizations which sound real only because the person's executive system is unable to locate the or discern the voice", why are the voices always evil?

It's just another case of "most researchers" being wrong, as they don't use scripture as the foundation for the beliefs they preach, and because there is no liability to them (in this life) for their claims without proof.

My understanding of the term 'dissociation':

Dissociation, when used in a psychiatric/medical context, usually refers to the fracturing of a person's identity or personality. There can be multiple causes of dissociation, one of which is trauma. Something traumatic happens to a person which completely overwhelms their ability to cope with the incident. This triggers a survival response during which one or more portions of the persons core, or 'heart', becomes separated into pieces referred to as 'alters'. There can be many kinds of alters with completely different functions.

An alter normally lives in the spiritual realm while the core will live primarily in the material world. The alter can express itself in the material world either by permission of the core or by overpowering the core and manifesting on its own. Some alters hold the memory of the trauma that induced the split and their purpose is to shelter the core from the devastation it would otherwise experience. Usually, when asked about the trauma, the core will experience amnesia and be completely unable to recall the traumatic event. In doing so, the core is able to 'survive' and continue on.

The core is aware of the alter and will often speak of 'hearing voices'. Because most psychiatrists deny the existence of anything 'spiritual', their response is usually to tell the person the voices they are hearing are 'all in their head'. The tools of their trade are designed to investigate the material world, not the spiritual.

I've learned that this sometimes happens to children who experience unbearable traumas.
Sometimes those carry into adulthood.

While studying this topic, I came across the most experienced psychotherapist on this topic that I could find. He was a non- Christian who actually recognized the spiritual nature of multiples and auditory schizophrenics in a large prison system.

From what I understand is that the adult multiples were communicating with others in the system even if the physical men were not in contact. This and a number of other clues led the non-christian therapist to believe that malevolent demon spirits were the alters.

My theory from those and other experiences is that many of the childhood alters are a coping mechanism. However, the adult acquired multiples may be demons who entered through some spiritual doorway.
