I have a question about this:
Does one sit and wait for God to respond or....how does this work exactly please?
Thank you for your response.

Hi and welcome! It means to not be anxious or worry. Proverbs 3:5 says: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;" God knows what he's doing so we can relax and trust Him.

This is verse 10 from Psalm 46, a song with the heading, God is Our Refuge and Strength, derived from verse 1.

During a recent storm front that came through, when others were anxious of forecasts of heavy rains, strong winds, and possible tornados, I woke up the next morning and asked if there was a storm. I mean, it was obvious that there was as everything had been waterlogged and the ditches were flooded but I had slept right through it all. Mind you, I typically never sleep all that soundly, ever, these days but I always sleep tight in the middle of storms. I makes me I wonder that if I'm not anything like Jesus in any other way, would the disciples have had to wake me up also on the ship in the middle of a storm? I'm not sure if I'd sleep the same being out there in the middle of the sea.
But, when the disciples woke Jesus up when the storm rose up while they were at sea, Jesus told the winds, "Be still" and the wind was calmed. Even wind recognizes Him as God, and so we, even if isn't as easy for us, should also be as wise as the wind.

The admonition to be still might be a way to avoid the following

Mat 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

The desire to have God respond might be addressed by immersion in his word.

This is an excellent question and one that can be difficult to deal with. We wait for God to give us direction, but we must also recognize that we have received it. There is a joke about a man in a flood asking God to rescue him, early on a man in a canoe comes by and offers to take him to safety, but the man declines as God will rescue him. Later a speedboat drives past and again they offer to rescue him but again he declines. Finally, a helicopter appears but is again rejected. The man drowns and goes to heaven where he asks God why He did not rescue him. God's reply is that He sent a canoe, a speedboat and a helicopter, why didn't the man accept the help.

Hello SuzM, I think that this Psalm (which is about life during the troubled times that we all face) is less focused on sitting and waiting on God to act and more focused on trusting Him (and in His great promises to us) in the midst any of the troubles that come our way. IOW, no matter what calamities and/or evils may befall us throughout our lives here (whether they are from nature or from people ... or from anywhere else for that matter .. e.g. Ephesians 6:12), we know that He is the One we are to turn to as our safe refuge in the "storm", and that we have no reason, then, to fear any of it :)

I love this Psalm (and all of the Psalms of the sons of Korah, in general), so thanks for broaching it, and I also believe that it (Psalm 46, that is) is the basis for Martin Luther's famous hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

God bless you!!

~Deuteronomy
(David)
p.s. - here are but a few of some of the other Scripture verses/passages that come to mind about this.

Deuteronomy 33
27 The eternal God is your dwelling place/refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Isaiah 26
3 The steadfast of mind Thou wilt keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in Thee.
Isaiah 41
10 Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
Lamentations 3
22 The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Thy faithfulness.
24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.”
Philippians 4
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Good question. "Waiting" is not a passive activity. To be still means to be quiet in the soul. We do not need to constantly think about it. We do not need excessive emotions. For example, don't start worrying about a plan you have or trying to work out mentally if it really is God's will. For sure pray about it. Thank God for the answer. And go about life as normal.

God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham did not argue as he did when Sodom was about to be destroyed. When Isaac questioned Abraham, Abraham prophesied, likely unknowingly. "God will provide the sacrifice". Abraham had quiet confidence in God that, one way or another, Isaac would live.

Thank you so much everyone who took the time to answer my query. I really appreciate it..Blessings to one and all.

Now another question:
With the world needing help financially and food, and animals needing the same, how does one know where or who to help? It's all so mind-boggling! I don't wish to help those who use people (as surely there are), to siphon financial help for their own agendas.
What's that verse that says Jesus says anyone who helps those who need it is.....?
Thank you so much again! I'm really curious to know what you say.
Blessings to one and all!

That's a good question and one that's been on my mind a lot lately. I see your profile says you attend church. Do they have any people there in need, or outreach programs to the poor or homeless? That's where I'd start. The early believers helped each other primarily. There's nothing wrong with helping others who aren't believers, but I believe our first responsibility is to our immediate family and our brothers and sisters in Christ.

It's not easy to know for sure. My wife and I heard about a middle aged couple who are new believers. The husband has a serious injury that stops him working. My first thought was to help out as we were able. I've never met them, but I trust the woman who told us. So we gave some money to her and she passed it on.

She dropped in to see us today. She had a "thank you" card with her for us. She told us that the husband, a truck driver, was deeply touched. We are blessed to be in a position to help.

A few days passed from the time we gave until today. I had some doubts creep in as to whether or not we'd done the right thing. We helped someone years ago that turned out to be a user. All we can do is pray and ask God to lead us. It's a joy to give, but sure, we want to help as God leads us.

I agree that this is an excellent question. I tend to help those I can see and know. I may not know them personally, but I can observe how they are living and what they do with the help I offer. If they seem to waste my offered help, then I need not continue, but if they seem to use it wisely then I can continue to assist. As for the animals and the environment in general, I again look to my immediate area first, and that includes my own lifestyle and yard. I try to live gently and to act to make my yard more wildlife friendly

I see no patience here on earth, maybe ba little. Yet this world moves fast and wants answers now. Each person has this going on in them also. I assume, really can only speak for me in my experiemces

When in past I have been impulsive, I have gotten messed up in the muck of this world. When I go to my prayer closet. I close out everyone, everything else. I say to God in there as I'm feeling presently, whether ir be good or bad. I end with being vented from my troubles. I let them out. Troubles not fixed, just vented and not haunting me as was. then a little later I hear new and get rested in trust to not stop.
Best for me to trust God to get me through all troubles, even those not yet fixed as many can't be, being here on earth, My learning is in process how to be content in all things happening, happened and whatever might happen in future events, whether good or bad.

I have watched over the years in not quitting, Col 1:21-23 is truth just to stand and wait patiently in God's love for us all. That is proven to me in 1 John 2:1-27
So yes decide to wait and not care about how long it might take to see new. It is like saying I am ready, to even die today. I am ready to be homeless, this is trust to God loves you and all others too
No patience here in this world we are in. As there is no impatience in Heaven God loves us all
Otherwise Son would not have gone to that cross willingly at all, I see this in thanksgiving and praise. So I will wait.
A short while here on earth compared to eternity forever with Father and Son who loves us all Jeremiah 29:11
A new you happens through risen Son for us all that choose Eph 1:13 to me at least
I, saw after belief to God

Ephesians 1:6
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Ephesians 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

I then started responding and have been learning ng not to create anymore

God teaches truth still, 1 John 2:27, believe, receive be new in the same love and mercy done for everyone by Son. To see not to think you got it, as if better than anyone else ever. Now being thankful God gives it free. No charge and give as led, which is not monetary only.
God just loves us all, each person individually. Wants what is best for each Jeremiah 29:11
I in past said to God, why are you being good to me. It is my kindness that teaches truth to all. Romans 2:1-4 so I know do not judge as did in past. God will take care of that, so I can rest. I call that God-quill over Ny-Quill so I can rest medicine.
I heard, "I" God Love you unconditionally, than I said wha about others? I heard you let me take care of you and I will take care of the rest. I saw no need to worry, God has got it all in risen Son for us all. Wow Isaiah 6:1-7
I replied so I can do whatever I choose? I heard Yes! I thought wow. Then saw to discern what is really good for me my Soul. I saw to not harm anyone else again, that was plain and simply not good for my soul to harm others as in 2 Samuel 12 the story of David am man after God's own heart
So I chose Father and Son to lead through me in the same love and mercy Son did for all. John 13:34
This is the rest of the story as Hebrews 4:9-13
So rest and learn once rest in God you will and have God's wisdom Luke 21:14-15 humbly so
