Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”One work.
Not "works!"
Believe!

Believing in Jesus Christ is the one work God accepts!
In John 6:29, Jesus said - "This is the work (singular) of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent," when He answered the Jews (who were taking a legalistic approach) when they asked, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works (plural) of God?" Certain folks mistakingly believe that believing is just "another" work in a series of works in a quest to receive salvation by works.
So, who's right?

No, read it again. It says, "kept by the power of God through faith". IOW, that by Himself and alone, He will keep those of His inheritance
through faith unto salvation. Nothing can change that, not even the actions of those of His inheritance. Once the testator died the beneficiaries of the will were established forever and cannot be added to nor removed from it - it became forever settled.
THROUGH faith, as in via faith!

Faith comes by hearing. Romans 10:17

Faith is the bridge God lays down so we can be crossed over into eternal life.
If you don’t hear about the “something” first, how can you have faith about that “something” without hearing about it?

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Man must have the faith in His heart, otherwise we can’t please Him.

In a sense I see belief/faith as a gift since they do not originate in us. God draws (John 6:44) and enables (John 6:65) and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)
Also, man is allowed to choose whether or not he wants to follow Him.

Meaning by way of….

Salvation is based on a condition…faith.
If you don’t have it, then there is no salvation. We must have faith in order to please Him.

But there are other verses that you must follow too. This is just a part.

Yeah, I thought so. It seems more of a misunderstanding in peoples’ perception in grammar of that one word “through.”

It’s a caveat, based on something conditional.
Not conditional at all. You're really having a lot of difficulty with that verse, aren't you? Do you see "by the power of God" in it?
That should tell you all you need to know - that God is in complete control. and for those of His inheritance, He, and He alone, will unconditionally guarantee they are kept unto salvation by faith until salvation is fully realized in its final form. It is as unconditional as anything can be since it is by God not man.

Part of the problem in reading these posts is that they are repetitive copy and paste.
  • @Genez seems to clearly think belief is a work God requires of man
  • I can't tell for sure what @mailmandan thinks:
    • Is belief a work that man does to receive salvation but not part of a series of works to receive salvation?

@Genez - you say you agree with him - does he agree with you?

He was breaking down the logic correctly...

Is belief a work that man does to receive salvation but not part of a series of works to receive salvation?

Works was a man made system for others to follow to secure eternal life.
But, one sole work of believing is not related to such a system.
Believing is not to be confused with a system "works" as it was being used in that day.
Works as prescribed by those whop dared to give them were not having any consistent thing to do.
One religious hypocrite could name several things, while another, would speak of other things to do to be saved.

He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16:31

That was a single work. The only one that was to bring salvation.
There is no merit in believing.
The one being believed in holds the merit in regard to Jesus Christ.

If I take something to cure an illness, and it does?
It is what was taken that caused the cure.
That substance holds the merit!

Not the one taking it.
Willing to take it did not cure him.
What was taken, did.

Absolutely conditional on man having faith. W/o it, it’s impossible to please Him; which you obviously dismiss.

In John 6:29, Jesus uses a paradoxical play on words to change the viewpoint of the audience's request for works. Jesus clarifies that the work God requires is not a system of works in order to merit eternal life, but the act of believing in Jesus in whom God has sent.

Understood. But it's unclear if he is willing to say that belief is a work man does.

He and I and another few posters went through this Scripture fairly extensively in early 2025.

When Jesus says 'this is the work of God - or the work God requires' - 'this' looks to be pointing back to John6:27 where Jesus commands them to work for lasting food for eternal life that Jesus will give them.

The wording can say that working for this food is for the purpose of believing in Jesus whom God sent.

So, in effect He is commanding them to work to believe in Him, which is essentially what I read you to say - belief is a work men do in response to Jesus' command to work to believe.

Jesus elaborates further in the drawing instruction.
