the rich young ruler said "rabbi"
- he is none other than a Jew

he is a "ruler"
- under Roman conquest as a Jew he can only be a high ranking member of the synagogue

he is rich, and expects there is something "he" can "do" to receive eternal life
- he can only be a pharisee, because the sadducees deny the resurrection
 
he claims to have kept the Torah, but he knows he does not have eternal life by keeping it - - because he asks Jesus how he can earn it through works, but claims to have perfectly performed the works of the Torah

if he had kept, "love your neighbor as yourself" would he be rich, or would he be sad to hear he must give up his possessions?

if he did not believe that giving all he had to the poor was what he lacked, why was he sad?
 
Jesus tells him, you know the commandments.
he replies, these I have kept.

he indicates thereby, he is not asking how to be empowered to keep the law. he is asking why keeping the Law does not result in eternal life (as he understands keeping of the Law)
 
Jesus tells him that he lacks something that is nowhere commanded in the law.

Salvation is therefore outside the law, as it is written, if righteousness came by the Law, then wherefore cometh Christ?
 
is he sad because it is impossible to do what Christ told him?

is he sad because selling his possessions and giving them to the poor would be tantamount to admitting that his life had been previously wasted?

is he sad because he thought Jesus was wise but now second guesses it?

what was Naaman the Syrian's reaction when the man of God told him to do something simply accomplished?
 
why does God respond to

"only I AM good"

?

why does He repeat this in all 3 synoptic gospels?

Maybe you think mentiioning scripture is the same as quoting it.

But let's move forward.

You correctly posted ONE of the qualities of BELIEVE because believe meant something very specific in NT times...
which I'm sure you know.

The one quality you posted is. TRUST

If we BELIEVE someone we will TRUST that person.

If we trust that person, we will learn from that person and tend to do what that person teaches...
if we're trusting of the person, we will do what they say we should do.

The person we're following is Jesus.

This is what HE said to do and what HE taught:


Matthew 5:13
13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how * can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

Jesus said WE are the salt of the earth.
He also said it should not become tasteless or it would be good for nothing...useless.


Matthew 5:19-20
19 "Whoever * then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever * keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 "For I say to you that unless * your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus desires obedience to His commandments.


Matthew 7.21
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Matthew 7:23
23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'
Disobedience to God is lawlessness.


Matthew 7:26-27 The Foolish Man
26 "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 "The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell -and great was its fall."



This is just Matthew 5 and 7,,,,there's much more - to say nothing of what Paul and the others taught.

Salvation requires belief IN God
and obedience to God.

No need to apologize.

You DID call me a liar.
THAT would require an apology since I never lied to you.
But I really don't care.

What I DO care about is persons belittling the sacrifice of Jesus by insinuating that He did not teach good works.
You cannot post one verse that states that we are not to obey God....
but there are many verses that state that we are to obey and that we are to do good works.

Doing good works does not annul God's grace.
It's more in keeping with the idea that we thank God for our salvation by doing what He commands and doing it joyfully.


1 John 5:2-3
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.


John says that there are commands to observe.
Your posts seem to contradict John.
If this is not your intention... your wording should be adjusted.

and you refuse to confess, much less repent, or explain how you can be saved by a gospel of works if you are found to be a liar worthy of eternal damnation...?
