But I don't want this topic to go Haywire it's a serious question but there are some pre-qualifiers that I'd like you to Define

1.Smoking cigarette tobacco is not a sin for example if one has a cigarette in the morning or perhaps after meal it is doing no more damage to a person's body than eating a steak and therefore claiming oh it's bad for you is a misnomer. To the point marijuana is considerably less damaging than a cigarette. If you are already going to claim that smoking cigarettes is a sin then I'm not actually interested in your response as I already know what that response is.

Currently many states allow medicinal use of marijuana and some recreational if we advance time let's say 25 years and we do make an assumption that marijuana is now recreational with similar guardrails that alcohol has.

Based on this premise would Church environments still claim that smoking weed is a sin.

The truth with anything including alcohol is everything should be in moderation as Paul states "everything is permissible but not all things are edifying".

And let me reiterate I'm not asking for anybody to tell me that it is currently a sin. And the assumption is that it is in moderation.

Im asking specifically, in the future when weed is legal recreationally will the church still think it's a sin.

Nicotine is my drug of choice. Don't drink alcohol or take drugs. Never even smoked pot.

Smoking pot may or may not be a sin, I'm not a judge or jury, but I do know that it is probably not a wise thing to start down that path.

I have known several potheads in my life, and I chose not to be around them. Seems like the most important thing for them was to score their next dooby. Their priorities were all screwed up.

I wouldn’t say any is of pure sin, it think it would be more the temptation to it or I control of it would make it ungodly. It’s ungodly, now maybe not an entire sin , but they are all unclean and ungodly. Now I’ve drank in the part heavily so I’m no saint. So don’t take it the wrong way but all of the above are unclean and ungodly, and usually lead into ungodly circles or ways of life. I don’t think a cigarette will get you to hell as it has no effect really on your behaviour majorly . Now weed and alcohol do in big enough amounts. I think it would be fair to say god would be against all. Whether it’s legal or not. Sex is legal. But god is not for fornication. These are always hard things to really have a clear definition on. I think our heart knows best through lots of prayer.

Why do you think it's not a sin? On what do you base this belief?

I spent many years working in mental health facilities as a registered nurse. By far the most common reason that young people presented with psychosis was from the use of marijuana. So I would say without a doubt that for the Christian it is a sin against the temple of the Holy Spirit.

We are called to be of a sober mind.
Really anything that effects our natural state and corrupts our temple is looked down upon.... from gluttony to herion.
The chances of it to be addicting are high and can cause health problems physically and mentally and often spiritually.
Some of the related words in the bible is sorcery, witchcraft, drunkard, pharmakia which come from pharmacy.
Drunkenness is a sin according to the word whether it covers all of these or not I couldn't say.

Smoking even a small amount of tobacco is harmful to your health. Scientific evidence indicates there is
no safe level of smoking, and even light or occasional smoking carries significant, long-term risks.

Key Health Risks of Low-Level Smoking

  • Heart Disease and Stroke: Smoking as few as 1 to 10 cigarettes a day, or even just one cigarette a day, greatly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Even light smoking can cause blood platelets to become stickier, increasing the risk of dangerous blood clots.
  • Cancer Risk: Smoking is linked to at least 13 types of cancer, including lung, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer. Research shows that smoking just 6 to 10 cigarettes a month (fewer than one a day) still elevates the risk of cancer.
  • Long-Term Damage: Even a few cigarettes a week can damage your blood vessels and cause DNA damage that can lead to cancer.
  • Early Death: People who smoke fewer than one cigarette a day still have a 60% higher risk of early death compared to non-smokers.
  • Respiratory Issues: Light smoking is associated with chronic cough, phlegm, and reduced lung function.
  • Addiction: Even smoking 1 to 5 cigarettes a week can be enough for a person to become addicted.
Common Misconceptions
  • "Social smoking" is harmless: Social smokers are still exposing themselves to carcinogens and cardiovascular risks.
  • "Light" cigarettes are safer: Research has shown that "light" or "low-tar" cigarettes pose the same health risks as conventional cigarettes, as users often inhale deeper or smoke more.
  • Exercise undoes the damage: There is no research showing that a healthy diet or exercise can undo the damage caused by smoking.

Regarding moderation, see post #7.
Add to that the fact that spending money on drugs including alcohol is a waste of money,
unless there is some valid medicinal use of drugs (cf. 1Tim. 5:23, Eph. 5:18).

I stopped reading after this sentence. With regards to steak, if you're referring to a beef steak that's a superfood that is very good for us... unless you drink the globalist kool-aid that would have us eating insects and lab grown fake meat.

Paul tells us that all things are permissible, but not all things are good for us. Tobacco is permissible, but it carries health risks. Alcohol is permissible, and even advocated for in places, but overuse of it is bad. Now marijuana is likewise permissible, but I would greatly question how wise it is and observe that overuse is definitely bad.

After my state legalized marijuana, I thought for a little while about legally buying some. A younger friend I was talking with then asked me how long it had been since I had indulged. I admitted that it was the late '70's when I last smoked. His observation was that I was used to regular beer level marijuana, and today's product was more like 151. I will pass.

1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Marijuana use carries significant risks, including addiction, impaired brain development in adolescents, worsened mental health (anxiety, depression, psychosis), and respiratory issues. It can cause memory, coordination, and learning problems, lower educational/career achievement, and increase risks during pregnancy.

Anything that hurts the body and impairs the mind would be wrong.

Would it be alright to impair the physical temple.

Some people think tattoos are alright.

But would it be alright to put graffiti on the physical temple.

Also God created people the way He wants them so why change the body with tattoos and substances.

We are not a canvas and we adorn the inner man not the outer man.

1Co 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

1Jn 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

1Ti 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
1Ti 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The love of money is the root of all evil for it neglects the poor and needy, and love is the fulfilling of the law.

What is more important the needy or spending money on our wants.

I know many people do not want to hear that loving to enjoy their wants and justifying themselves.

Weed was once an illicit drug and, therefore, consuming it was considered a sin because, to do so, one disobeyed the laws of the land.

Now that weed is legal (in many states) simply using it is not necessarily a sin. It may be in some cases, like while driving or using heavy machinery, but the substance itself is not inherently evil.

With that said, sons of God are to be led by the Spirit of God. If any substance impairs our ability to respond to the Spirit it should be avoided. Furthermore, if your action causes a brother or sister to stumble, do not do it; at least do not do it in front of them. Are you able to use weed and not smell like weed to your godly family or to not present as "high" to them? If not, then do not use it. Would you lose credibility in your mission field by using weed? (your mission field is where God has established you) If so, do not use weed.

There is more I could write about this. If you have questions just ask.

Blessings

That is true it does raise the potential of problems. And I personally wouldn't suggest people start smoking pot. But if they did, moderation and appropriate setting.

As for being in the missionary field or involved in church activities where you are an example it would be a bad idea. Society hasn't progressed to the point where weed it accepted (legally) just as much as alcohol.

Two more things. Weed can bring about deep spiritual insight, albeit risky. Yet if you were ministering to a jungle tribe of native who use mushrooms or some DMT concoction, the idea of weed creating issues is laughable. So, it is situational. As Paul has said:

1 Cor 9:20 And to the Jews I became like a Jew, so that I might win the Jews. To those under the Law, as under the Law (myself not being under the Law) so that I might win those under the Law.

The part I bolded in your comment is very true.

And just in case you never deep dived into the scripture about intoxicants......

Saffron is classed as one of the permissible “drugs that cause joy”. It contains the GABA agonist safranal, as well as safrole which is used in the manufacture of MDMA. Safrole is also found in Cinnamon, along with eugenol, which is another MDMA precursor. Agarwood is sedative and analgesic. Spikenard (pronounced “spick ‘n ‘ard”) is the ointment rubbed on Jesus’ feet, much to the annoyance of Judas who betrays his master immediately afterwards (John 12, Mark 14). It boosts neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine and GABA, and is classed as a nootropic, meaning that it assists in memory formation. Pomegranate is rich in serotonin, melatonin, and other tryptamines. Henna is the one plant without any known psychoactive chemicals, though maybe the ancients knew something we don’t.

And so that i can beat a dead horse ....

High Priests

The recipe was protected by mortal taboos and guarded by a certain family of the Levite priestly tribe. Levite priests also made the wine, which was psychoactive of course, but all the more so if they were extracting alkaloids into it as did most ancient tribes. They also made the Shewbread, which was consumed at dosages the size of a single bean - which seems more appropriate for a hit than a snack.

And the delicate priests refused to take it altogether, but the voracious ones accepted and consumed. It once happened, one took his own share and his fellow’s: he was nicknamed “robber” till his death.

In the Tabernacle, which was off-limits to all but the Levites, the Shewbread was served together with Frankincense to most of the priests sitting together. Meanwhile, the High Priest went alone into the Holy of Holies, a 4½m3 innermost chamber beneath four layers of thick skins and material and sealed with a thick veil.

The Tabernacle

The chamber was used exclusively to divine with angels via the agency of ‘handfuls of sweet incense beaten small… that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony’ (Leviticus 16:12). This is not a stick of Sandalwood, rather it is a Holy hotbox for a very high High Priest, basted in oils and allylbenzenes and then smoked in a wide range of psychoactive vapors. The incense contained opioid receptor agonists including Galbanum and two grades of Myrrh, as well as Saffron, Agarwood, Cassia, and Cinnamon. Another analgesic burned reverently around Asia called Sassurea costus was added, as well as spikenard, the nootropic. This addition makes sense given that the High Priest needed to remember his divinations through a haze of tranquillizers and psychedelics.

The High Priest entered the chamber alone with his power plants, surrounded by magical objects and familiar spirits, as did the medicine-men of the Amazon and Siberian planes, and would return from communion with wisdom to share with the tribe. When the High Priest drew back the veil of the Tabernacle, a pillar of smoke would rise at the door. The pillar of smoke that guides the Israelites is described as appearing at the Tabernacle door, and perhaps it leads the tribe by leading its shaman, as was proper back in the day. Following signs and divine designs, Moses leads his people to a vision at Sinai.

yes, and so can eating a large steak and patatoe. What you should do is qualify your statement to show excessive use of Tabacco is more dangerous that the basic food we eat.

The point is there is NO safe amount of smoking. Nor is smoking essential for survival, as is protein (or eating).

i don't believe pot & cigarette smoking is a sin. certainly, it's not healthy. i do not believe pot smoking should be legal. smoking too much pot or drinking too much alcohol is a sin. even alcoholics hear their brain telling them to stop but don't. a chronic smoker will be told by himself or herself to stop. God give us all the ability to know when to stop anything. the u.s. allows pot smoking to be legal because they want to collect revenue from it. they have all kinds of fancy speech to prop something as good for you. medicinal use & recreational purposes are just an excuse to sell it. anything humans do to the point of gluttony is sin. churches, most of them i think, will consider it a sin. i know a church which makes you sign that you will tithe 10% always to join. holy heavens, how controlling! some churches go overboard on women wearing jewelry. another church would allow only 3 hours at a church picnic, gathering or other event!! who the heck are they to tell you when your good time is up? unbelievable.
