Guys,

What IF you found out your best friend was having an affair? He has been your friend since the 7th grade, some 30 or so years.

And you were the only one who knew about it, that was not involved.

What would you say and/or do to comfort/correct/advise/etc... ?

The Bible teaches we should not "company" and not "eat" with fornicators. You should try to distance yourself from their company. You should pray for them and any advice you give should be in the way of repentance and salvation because obviously they are not saved. Definitly pray about it and distance yourself from their company. I do not believe you cannot talk to them. Do not be ashamed of Jesus Christ. It is them that needs to be ashamed for what they have done, not you.

Sorry, should have informed, he is a Christian. Very devoted, at least he is bearing fruit. I can not judge his Salvation. As far as I know it only happened the one time, but I think he needs to tell his wife. So we assume he has repented and asked for forgiveness from God

He is afraid it will end his marriage. I say man up and reap what you have sown.

Definitely advise him to stop and instead address the problem of why his marriage isn't working. He is not only hurting his wife, but he is also offending the Lord. God Himself said in the old testament that adulterers should be stoned to death.

Rebuke and depart. But also encourage to repent and when repentant restore him fully to fellowship.

If he were to continue down this path, then I would definitely agree with the "rebuke and depart" statement. If he has in fact repented, then perhaps just the former is necessary.

Seems like you're looking for a fairly straightforward answer to whether he should tell his wife or not. Personally, I say: yes, he should "man up". If his wife can forgive him, disaster is not eminent. But if it does end his marriage, one could argue it's his penance. By keeping it secret, I think he's drawing the sin out further.

That's brutal... but if i considered the situation reversed, and It was me being cheated on, and my wife's best friend didn't tell her to tell me and I found out later... Id forgive my wife, perhaps stay with her, but i certainly wouldn't want my wife being friends with someone who had known, yet hadn't tried to help my wife make the right decision.

But more importantly.. the longer he doesn't tell her, the harder it's going to be for his wife...
If he comes and confesses quickly, he's still been an adulterer but he may seem more repentant...
If he doesn't, and leaves it for longer she may very well view that he has contempt for her.

The issue's deep my friend... but he can't not be honest if he wants to save his marriage. He broke covenant with her... the only way for it to be repaired is with her forgivness... her ignorance still leaves it broken. If he wants to see if she will help him mend it, the sooner the better.
