I recently read the book 'Conclave' and then watched the DVD. There is a place where the Dean of the conclave is giving a homily in St Peters basilica where he talks about the 'sin of certainty'. This got me thinking, is there such a thing? We have all come across people who are so 'certain' in their beliefs but something does not ring true about them. Then there is the unteachable who are so 'certain' they are correct and you are so wrong!.

What are your thoughts? Is there such a thing as the sin of certainty?

I agree. Those two examples you gave seem to show how certainty could be a problem.

Is there a place for 'honest doubt' in the light of 'certainty', in our lives, or is all doubt, sin?

Speaking strictly about my Christian walk, there are some things I'm absolutely certain about; but there are many I'm not. In either case, the wise thing to do, seems to me, is to always practice humility.

I am reminded of a quote I read many years ago...........
" When I was young, I had all the answers, now that I am old, I have only questions".
As a 73 year old, that resonates with me.

The source of all sin is pride. The "Sin of Certainty" is nothing more than a dull reflection of the source.
