Jas 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Jas 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Jas 3:7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
Jas 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

The tongue will sin more than any other body part.

If we can tame the tongue we will not have difficulty taming the whole body.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

No person can tame the tongue so God has to tame the tongue.

Oh
That's apparently a simple and well "supported" statement with the usual and expected
Quoting of scripture
No where in scripture does the spirit even imply
Simply leave it to me
If He did
Where would the battle be
In your perspective
There's really no need to put on the whole armour of God
God HAS to fight the fight
That's not my understanding
Not
My experience
The enemy is REAL
And ours
He stands defeated in eternity
But as a roaring lion goes about looking for someone to devour
If it were simply Gods job
There'd be no need for the scripture
Or maybe I'm abit too childlike

Oh my
I can see clearly now the rain has gone
A mere repeat is ego at its "majestic" highest
Sorry the elect cannot be mislead
May The Spirit of Pure Love fill your heart and guide your mind

It’s something he enables us to do when we begin to listen to the doctrine

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭12:36‬ ‭KJV‬‬

And so then the doctrine

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: neither give place to the devil.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:11-27‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s meant to change our thinking to what he’s telling us about ourselves so we’ll begin to understand my words matter I need to be careful what I say I have to answer to him later . It’s meant to spur us forward not demand we are perfect from the start everything is reformed about us in him but we have to accept what Jesus and the apostles were teaching us to believe and do and strive for

If we are convinced “ I can’t change this or that “ we won’t be able to but as we learn what’s happened in Christ and what his Will is our faith begins to move us into things we couldn’t have ever done without him

The doctrine in the gospel has the power to change helpless sinners into upright mean and women of God bit often we reject it

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We have to put forth the effort not to sin and then the Spirit will help us.

God will not force us to comply.

Wow
That's a lengthy sermon
But it says nothing of your own experience
The Christian community is to uplift encourage and edify
Not show their knowledge of scripture
And use that to justify a position
For all I know
When all's said and done-
We may well share the same view
But I'm talking from my experience
Which is backed up by scripture
I could defend my position if I desired
But id rather plead to the unity of the spirit and end this purposeless opposition
We have to put forth the effort not to sin and then the Spirit will help us.

Oh
Thanks for your wisdom

You mentioned taming the tongue.

We are to edify but this is Bible discussion so I quoted from the Bible about how no one can tame the tongue but by hating sin and allowing the Spirit to lead them.

2Ti 3:4 lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Not everyone allows the Spirit to lead them.

Which they should know to hate sin.

Gal 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

You do not want to get caught up in arrogance.

Lord it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the mirror
Cuz I get better every day
To know me is to love me
I must be a wonderful man
Lord it's hard to be humble
But I'm doing the best I can

Sometimes the Holy Spirit gives utterance, but we have to yield to Him.
Otherwise even if I speak in the tongues of angels and have no love, I am nothing.

Probably not the answer you are seeking, but this is posted in the Bible discussion forum, so people will actually reference the Bible in their answers.

I am challenged more by the people I knew before I began my walk, nearly forty years ago.

One of my personal, successful tactics is to acknowledge the Spirit in me... Talk with Him for a bit before I open my mouth.

"Christ consciousness"
is what a dear brother taught me.

I was a sailor, andy joke had always been, "I'm the guy that taught sailors to cuss." But when I was first hanging around mature Christians, my Christian sailor buddies would always give a gentle reminder to be conscious of my speech in the presence of females.

This was a tremendous help.

I write this as I'm sitting here awaiting roadside assistance after hitting a huge pothole, and losing my brakes and power steering in my 24' motorhome.

I don't recall losing focus on my speech during todays incident, but a driver aggressively honked at me when I was trying to find a place to coast to...

Something slipped out, not overly unacceptable, but I still quickly repented, and returned to being focused on the business of getting "un-stranded."

Interestingly, I've had the good fortune to have been trained to remain calm in stressful, life-threatening ordeals, through military and EMS training.

I have recognized that interpersonal matters seem to have a thinner "filter" that needs to be cleaned or replaced more often.

My lifeline to not letting myself succumb to the temptation to spew venom, I simply called a family member to assist me and a good friend to keep at an even keel. I'm laughing and making others laugh about this... I've learned, (admittedly, in counseling), to "under react" the moment something happens that you would normally overreact to, setting off that explosive verbal assault against your own body... AND a member of Christ's Body.

This insight may or may not help, but, it isn't always foul language that needs to be tamed, but inappropriate humor, comments, and conversations. That's a bigger struggle, because that is harder to filter and it's not as noticeable as blurting out regretful adjectives and other grammatical weapons.

I think you've alluded to something more important still, that being our "triggers". Something unforeseen, contrary, sudden, and we become triggered in the flesh, energized, and we have to be able to quickly recognize that, and de-energize it.

Some things trigger me more easily than others. Some things trigger a stronger response then others.

You mention learning to underreact, I think this happens as we choose beforehand to react appropriately to circumstances.

Approaching every social interaction with the intention that I'm to be helping and not hurting, giving and not taking, building up and not tearing down, keeps the goal in front of my eyes. And praying!

Much love!

Oh
That was direct
Thanks for being blunt
But I was actually looking for an honest discussion on the personal reality of the subject
Maybe Paul took an unusual stance stating what I want to do
I don't do
I think maybe it wasn't just actions he was referring to
But
More probably words
It's ok
If you want to hide behind quoting scripture on this subject to save you from an honest share
But don't get caught up in indirectly accusing a brother of self deception
That's not a safe place to stand
You'll find it sinks
I know this
I've stood there often

Taming the tongue

this can be done by our Maturing in our walk with Christ -----the battle in fighting this and having victory is -----Purge the Heart of worldly stuff ------that is the Battle ------and it is not an easy battle to win ------most of us will never reach the victory ---as it takes ---Stamina to Mature and stay the course --

To tame the tongue first requires you to purify the Heart -----What is in the Heart the mouth speaks

Ai
a person's words reveal their true inner character, thoughts, and emotions. What is stored inside (the heart) inevitably overflows into spoken words and actions.Proverbs 4:23

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to tame the tongue, transforming speech from a source of poison into a vessel for blessing and grace. The Holy Spirit provides the necessary power to overcome unruly speech.

I say --------If God can shut the mouth of a lion ----He can help us Tame our Tongue ------

Proverbs 4

23 Guard your heart more than anything else,
because the source of your life flows from it.

Hebrew word for purify

Lexical Summary
barar: To purify----
show yourself pure , cleanse (be clean), , purge (out).

So the Question is -
-------How do you purify your heart -?????????-----

You need to Mature from being Carnal minded Christian -----James 4 speaks of this ---Carnal Christians who are double minded and unstable in their thinking and ways -----you need to Purge the mind to the worlds way of thinking to God's way only ----and stop trying to think and Speak and live as the world thinks --speaks and lives ----purge the heart of all worldly Pollutants ---

To Tame the tongue takes woks on our part with the help of Holy Spirit ----

A pure heart, characterized by inner integrity and sincerity,
naturally produces gracious, kind, and good speech.

There are Spiritual benefits to Taming the Tongue

Spiritual Benefits:

Signs of Spiritual Maturity: According to James, those who control their tongue are spiritually mature, capable of controlling their entire being.

Avoids Grieving the Spirit:
Uncontrolled, unwholesome speech saddens the Holy Spirit; guarding the mouth maintains a close relationship with God.

Reflects God's Character:
Choosing gentle, true, and encouraging words instead of gossip or slander aligns a person with divine nature and reflects inner spiritual health.

Purifies the Soul and Heart:
controlling the tongue is considered the first step to mastering all senses, which cleanses the heart and allows for greater devotion.

Brings Life and Blessing
: Words have power; controlling them avoids destruction, instead bringing "honeycomb" healing to the soul and life to others

Some things trigger me more easily than others. Some things trigger a stronger response then others.
You make valid points in your full response, some of which are stated more clearly than my thoughts could convey.

As for the trigger response... Yep, me too.

For me, I recognized that I'd trained myself to assign a negative value to things: sounds, sights, memories, people that remind me of memories, the wrong word, tone, or attitude of others.

I used to be an impatient person, so I intentionally would stand in the longest, slowest line at the grocery with just 1 or 2 items in my hand. And when someone kindly points out the empty express lane, I humbly decline with a smile and tell them that I'm an impatient person, so I intentionally stand in the longest, slowest line at the grocery with just 1 or 2 items in my hand...............

The beauty of that story is that when I feel impatient, I have it memorized in my mind, and tell it to others, because it helps me to be accountable to them. (nothing worse than being reminded, "Hey, what about that story about training yourself to be patient?")

I studied a book called "Make Anger Your Ally" (can't recall the author)

It was a just a book to read, but I couldn't just read it. I took notes, highlighted it, and then read it again.

I worked on impatience to avoid impatience triggers; I worked on anger to avoid anger triggers.

When my triggers are not so sensitive, I don't use my mouth inappropriately. (Of course, I'm a Barney Fife fan and have ultimately learned to "nip it, nip, nip it in the bud!")

For me, the triggers aren't the events around me, they're inside me. It's up to me to learn how my mind responds the moment before I trigger... I found that I was setting myself up subconsciously to find a reason, or excuse, to use inappropriate speech.

Lately, I have found myself correcting my bad choice of word, or words, that I spoke to someone who uses at least two or three in a sentence. It's hard work to make yourself self conscious... But we have Someone who can be a reminder not just "who we are," but "whose we are."

Galatians 5:16-17

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

In Ephesians 4:22-24 we are told:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

The word "renewed" of verse 23 is translated from the Greek word ananeoō: to renew ... to be renewed in mind, i. e. to be spiritually transformed, to take on a new mind

The renewed mind is not our carnal mind with Bible verses in it ... the renewed mind is the mind of Christ. That is such an amazing truth. And this is something God works within the born again believer (Titus 3:5-6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour)

What I do in my life as far as being transformed by the renewing of my mind.

every now and again during my day I do what I call a "check up from the neck up". I observe what "works" are being exhibited in my life in the moment, right then.

If what I see exhibited in my life is the love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (fruit of the Spirit), then I know I'm good to go ... mind renewed, living in the Lord, abiding in the Vine, etc.

However, if what I see exhibited in my life is the works of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21; Eph 4:25-31; Col 3:5 ... just a sampling, not an exhaustive list), I know I have been drawn away. Once I realize I have been drawn away, I turn my heart back to the Lord Jesus Christ and go from there. And the Lord is always there when I turn back to Him.

And, yes, sometimes that is moment by moment, depending upon the circumstances I face at any given time in my day.

From my extensive study, which goes far beyond just what is in the Protestant Bible, I have come to suspect that a key part of Sin, which we cannot defeat on our own, is what we call "the ego". No part of our consciousness will fight harder to maintain itself than our ego, and our ego will drive us to do many things we do not really want to do, but we still feel forced to take the action, including saying things we don't really want to say.
