I’m a slow learner who is a little confused. Maybe someone can set me straight

I’ve been told that if I keep the First Testament Commands, I am trying to earn forgiveness by works. This, it is claimed, abolishes the Grace of Christ. So apparently, these are forbidden works:

To sanctify the Sabbath - Ex. 20:8
To love God - Deut. 6:5
To hallow God's name - Lev. 22:32
To honor father and mother -Ex. 20:12
To return lost property - Deut. 22:1
To build a Sanctuary - Ex. 25:8
To pray to God - Ex. 23:25; Deut. 6:13
To rebuke the sinner -Lev. 19:17
To leave the gleanings for the poor -Lev. 19:9
To give charity according to one's means -Deut. 15:11
To ensure that scales and weights are correct -Lev. 19:36
To pay wages at the time due -Deut. 24:15

If this is true, then why don’t these commands also abolish grace? Are they not works?

Bring in the Poor - Luke 14:12-14
Render to Caesar - Matthew 22:19-21
Love Your Neighbor - Matthew 22:39
Celebrate the Lord’s Supper - Matthew 26:26-27
Feed My Sheep - John 21:15-16
Baptize My Disciples - Matthew 28:19
Honor Marriage - Matthew 19:6
Do Not Despise Little Ones - Matthew 18:10
Do Unto Others - Matthew 7:12
Keep Your Word - Matthew 5:37
Repent - Matthew 4:17
Follow Me - Matthew 4:19

If you willfully keep the commandments before Jesus under grace knowing you have perpetual salvation, (because you will slip up every now and then), then you're not trying to earn salvation with works.
If you willfully disregard the salvation of Jesus and try to 'show up' to God with how much you obey his commandments, that's trying to earn salvation with works.

Sometimes the ladder error isn't always manifested through the Holy word (as in denominational church commandments that God never ordained), but it's not something to worry about when you know you attain to grace.

Well, what you should have been told is that it is impossible to earn forgiveness by keeping any command other than that which expresses God's requirement for salvation, which is to believe in God's Son Jesus as Messiah and Lord incarnate, after which the indwelling HS will motivate you to do various loving works (John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Rom. 5:5, Eph. 2:8-10).

I recommend reading Isaiah 53 . It’s a prophecy of Jesus on the cross for us . It will help you understand Gods perspective on this matter . Beware there are many versions of gospel , get it from the word of God in writing! Prayerfully. Let God convince you ! Read and pray like your life depends on it , the more serious you read the word the more it will reach you . You can do this by reading on your own . My personal experiences confirm this . Many times . Faith comes by hearing hearing the word of God . Thank God we have his written word . The more you read it the more you will learn. The Gospel of John is great also to hear from Jesus . The scriptures prove who Jesus is “ the Son of God “ messiah / Christ the anointed one of God . Not God himself. But Jesus his Son . Believing in the wrong Jesus does not work only deceives. Let the Bible prove who Jesus is . They all confess that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God through out the NT . Start with Peter’s confession. And Jesus approved him . God bless you all as you seek the truth . It sets you free !

What you mentioned is works of love which always have to be obeyed and required.

When it is saying not saved by works it is not speaking of works of love but physical works like the Old Testament physical laws or anything else we try to do not rooted primarily in love of people.

Love is the fulfilling of the law so we have to have works of love to fulfill the law.

Fall short on those works and there is no salvation.

Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Rom 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Love is the fulfilling of the law which include the commandments that have to do with not offending people.

How can a person think doing them is works and not necessary when they are necessary for salvation.

Mat 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
Mat 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Mat 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Mat 19:19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Jesus told the rich man to keep the commandments that have to do not offending people which is love to inherit eternal life.

And sell all he had and give to the poor for that is love.

Which the love of money is the root of all evil for it neglects the poor and needy.

Millions of people claiming Christianity violate that which if a person teaches godliness is gain withdraw from them.

Rom 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Rom 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Rom 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Paul said we do not void out the law but we live up to it.

Which the law is spiritual, holy, just, and good, which are the moral laws, laws of love that must be obeyed.

You cannot call them works like they are not important and not necessary when they have to do with salvation the same as confessing Christ.

2Ti 3:4 lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

They are a requirement which not all obey.

Charity, love in action, works, is greater than faith.

And faith works by love.

John said do not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed, works, and in truth.

Love is only valid in works.

Jas 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Jas 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Jas 2:25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

We are justified by works and not by faith alone.

Some people will say faith produces works but works produces faith.

No works then no faith.

1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Paul said he could have all faith so he could remove mountains but if he did not have charity, works he is nothing saying the same thing as James.

We are not saved by works but by faith when we first come to Christ for that is all we can do.

But after we are saved we have to have works of love for faith to be valid.

Jesus is the Son of God , God himself sits on the throne and Jesus is now at his right hand interceding on our behalf . God raised Jesus up to his right hand . God did not die on the cross as some false gospels claim . God is eternal and cannot die . The devil would love the idea of God to die . But it’s not possible that’s why Jesus was sent to shed his blood and die . And 3 day risen up by God . God was with Jesus as he claimed many times throughout his life , but never claimed to be God himself. God forsook Jesus on the cross to die condemned for us . Read Isaiah 53 . Jesus said my God my God why have you forsaken me on the cross . Wake up people God cannot forsake himself. The Lamb of God was for us . Amen !

No one can be justified by keeping the old covenant. New covenant believers follow Christ and the Holy Spirit and their standards are higher than that of the old covenant; so if someone follows the old covenant rules, they're trying to be justified by a system that God has already declared inferior.

Rev 4:2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

If Jesus is sitting next to the Father why is there only one throne in heaven.

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, "until I make thine enemies thy footstool".

1Co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
1Co 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
1Co 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

If Jesus at the right hand means He is sitting next to the Father then why is it temporary and will cease when Jesus' enemies are conquered.

Where will Jesus go.

That is not what Jesus at the right hand means.

1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Jesus at the right hand means that God exalted the man Christ Jesus to exercise the throne of power until His enemies are conquered.

And when they are conquered and all things subdued to Him then the Son shall submit to God stop exercising the throne of power that God may be all in all.

Jesus said my God my God why have you forsaken me on the cross .
He was quoting Psalm 22 as it was being fulfilled...

Also a PS in case you have not been told? Denying the divinity of Jesus is the number one theological no-no here.

Jesus submits to the one God and Father that gave him all the power he has . God is head over all including Jesus . Your verses all state the obvious. Jesus is the Son of God not the One God which is the Father . Jesus sitting at Gods right hand as the Son of the Almighty God is so obvious.

I’m a slow learner who is a little confused. Maybe someone can set me straight

I’ve been told that if I keep the First Testament Commands, I am trying to earn forgiveness by works. This, it is claimed, abolishes the Grace of Christ. So apparently, these are forbidden works:

To sanctify the Sabbath - Ex. 20:8
To love God - Deut. 6:5
To hallow God's name - Lev. 22:32
To honor father and mother -Ex. 20:12
To return lost property - Deut. 22:1
To build a Sanctuary - Ex. 25:8
To pray to God - Ex. 23:25; Deut. 6:13
To rebuke the sinner -Lev. 19:17
To leave the gleanings for the poor -Lev. 19:9
To give charity according to one's means -Deut. 15:11
To ensure that scales and weights are correct -Lev. 19:36
To pay wages at the time due -Deut. 24:15

If this is true, then why don’t these commands also abolish grace? Are they not works?

Bring in the Poor - Luke 14:12-14
Render to Caesar - Matthew 22:19-21
Love Your Neighbor - Matthew 22:39
Celebrate the Lord’s Supper - Matthew 26:26-27
Feed My Sheep - John 21:15-16
Baptize My Disciples - Matthew 28:19
Honor Marriage - Matthew 19:6
Do Not Despise Little Ones - Matthew 18:10
Do Unto Others - Matthew 7:12
Keep Your Word - Matthew 5:37
Repent - Matthew 4:17
Follow Me - Matthew 4:19
I think you are confusing what we do to be saved, and what we do because we are saved. The things in both of your lists are not things we do to earn our salvation. Nobody is saved because they do things like returning lost property, leaving gl]eanings for the poor, rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, or honouring marriage. We are saved by God's grace alone, as Paul wrte to the Christians at Ephesus:

(Eph 2:4 NKJV) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
(Eph 2:5) even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
(Eph 2:6) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
(Eph 2:7) that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
(Eph 2:8) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
(Eph 2:9) not of works, lest anyone should boast.
(Eph 2:10) For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

In case any have the illusion that Jesus is sitting on the throne as God Almighty, read this in Revelation ch 5 v1 And I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back , sealed with seven seals . ( obviously God sitting on his throne . ) verse 6 And I looked , and behold , in the midst of the throne ( notice not on the throne ) stood a lamb as though it had been slain ( Jesus the Son of God ) verse 7 THEN HE CAME AND TOOk THE SCROLL OUT OF THE RIGHT HAND OF HIM WHO SAT ON THE THRONE . (God Almighty no doubt here sitting on his throne )!
Verse 9 You are worthy to take the scroll, and open its seals , FOR YOU WERE SLAIN, and have REDEEMED us to God by your BLOOD…. ( no doubt this is Jesus the Son of God ) . Here is a written heavenly view prophecy by Apostle John . Amen nothing like the written word of God to see if it is so !

Yes, that is exactly my point.

Those who claim the old covenants are works that have been abolished, and replaced by a new covenant of grace, are denying God his throne. The church has replaced YHWH with a false god that makes no judgements or demands, and dispenses cheap grace (grace without cost). How can anyone who reads the Bible, even if they only read the Second Testament, come to that conclusion?

It is NOT denying Yeshuah his divinity by recognizing His relationship with The Father.

I agree with you and did not say anything contrary. Several posts have indicated I was preaching salvation by works. Where did that come from? My post was only about those who preach the First Testament laws have been nullified by grace. I am beginning to believe the label “salvation by works” is cast about much too freely.

God gave man free will. By grace we are called, we can do nothing to entice that call, but we can reject it and we sometimes do. The moment we accept His grace we are commanded to behave in certain ways. If we reject those ways, we risk rejection of the salvation. God’s grace covers our human weaknesses; praise Him. It does not cover willful disobedience.

We are given a helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide our ways. But how can we know if the whispers are from the Holy Spirit or from something far more sinister? What is the standard we use to discern truth? It must be the commandments of God, first given as physical requirements; eventually elevated by Christ, without alteration, to their full spiritual meaning. The law has not been abolished, altered or set aside. That was my point, perhaps poorly made.

Thank you and sorry for any misunderstanding of your earlier post.

At some point in time Bible teachers made "salvation from the second death" the most important message.
When I read the scriptures, being conformed to Christ stands out as our paramount concern.
We are saved to be with the Lord forever by grace through faith. This is the work of the Lord.
We are saved from the ways of the world - and the entrapment of an earthly life defined by the schemes of the Enemy - by practicing the works designed for us in Christ, from the beginning of the world.

Being entrapped by the world's schemes may lead to sickness, untimely death, and/or loss of commission by God but it will not condemn us, again, to the second death. Whatever one with the Spirit of God in him/her lacks upon death will be learned in the millennium. Herein, when the power of the Enemy is bound, they will be conformed to the image of Christ. 1000 years are allotted for this instruction.

I’m a slow learner who is a little confused. Maybe someone can set me straight

I’ve been told that if I keep the First Testament Commands, I am trying to earn forgiveness by works. This, it is claimed, abolishes the Grace of Christ. So apparently, these are forbidden works:

To sanctify the Sabbath - Ex. 20:8
To love God - Deut. 6:5
To hallow God's name - Lev. 22:32
To honor father and mother -Ex. 20:12
To return lost property - Deut. 22:1
To build a Sanctuary - Ex. 25:8
To pray to God - Ex. 23:25; Deut. 6:13
To rebuke the sinner -Lev. 19:17
To leave the gleanings for the poor -Lev. 19:9
To give charity according to one's means -Deut. 15:11
To ensure that scales and weights are correct -Lev. 19:36
To pay wages at the time due -Deut. 24:15

If this is true, then why don’t these commands also abolish grace? Are they not works?

Bring in the Poor - Luke 14:12-14
Render to Caesar - Matthew 22:19-21
Love Your Neighbor - Matthew 22:39
Celebrate the Lord’s Supper - Matthew 26:26-27
Feed My Sheep - John 21:15-16
Baptize My Disciples - Matthew 28:19
Honor Marriage - Matthew 19:6
Do Not Despise Little Ones - Matthew 18:10
Do Unto Others - Matthew 7:12
Keep Your Word - Matthew 5:37
Repent - Matthew 4:17
Follow Me - Matthew 4:19
Well all I will say is.. wow.. if only I was this slow of a learner. ;)
