Lately, as I have been trying to let go of my wordly desires, and focus on the Lord and His plans for me, I have found myself questioning something.

In the Bible, it says, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4).

Of course, He will grant us our desires as long as they glorify Him, and consequently change our desires if He sees fit. But the other day, I was talking to a friend recently about our life plans, be it marriage, having kids, or career-wise. And it led me to wonder, at what point should we keep thinking of our desires, while placing them completely before God?

I don't know if that question makes sense, but what I'm trying to say is, we should first focus on God, and He will give us what we need. But, if He knows the desires of our heart, how do we stop thinking about them and just live life for Him? Do we need to ignore our desires or feelings, in order to focus only on God and have it be His way? Or, is it okay to contemplate on them? Like, recently, I have been contemplating the idea of one day having a relationship and marrying, for example. But, at what point should I stop thinking about it after putting it before God?

Does that make sense?

Its makes sense .I'm not sure the answer, maybe partially. One you can see it as Need,
like Fulfilling the women *your needs*, to be like God that maybe be giving life in a man child . Let The Lord be part of the thoughts stick with them . Natural need is blessed by the Lord .Or just turn the thinking around ,like you Said To Glorify The Lord ,that what it's really all About .

If you want one scripture I can provide but I think u already know it
so
i wait if need it ? Starts with Trust ......ends ....Paths

Hello Anothergirl, the secret to that (to living your life focused on Him instead of on the things that we think that we want from Him, that is) is found in the opening or command half of the verse.

Psalm 37
4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

The only question that remains, then, is how to best do that, yes :unsure: (we can also talk about that, at least what has worked for me anyway, if you'd like to).

Do we need to ignore our desires or feelings, in order to focus only on God and have it be His way? Or, is it okay to contemplate on them?
Well, no, v4 doesn't say that. It's really a matter of what we are principally focused on throughout the day. So, the key to obeying our half of the verse, the command of v4, that is, is to always stay focused on/delight ourselves in Him, rather than on the things that we think that we want from Him.

Like, recently, I have been contemplating the idea of one day having a relationship and marrying, for example. But, at what point should I stop thinking about it after putting it before God?
These are wonderful things to contemplate, of course, but you can and should turn away from them (as your ~principal~ focus) and return to delighting yourself in Him, instead (because even though being married and having a family of our own is HIGH up on His list for us, in the end it is He who is our portion and our hope .. e.g. Lamentations 3:24, not the things that we want from Him, no matter how good they may be, yes?).

So, when you find yourself thinking principally about marriage/children, for instance, one of the easiest ways to return to being focused on Him again is to find ways to rejoice in and thank Him for giving us this great blessing :) IOW, v4 is not telling us to stop thinking about the things that we want, rather, it's telling us to put our wants/desires in the right context by focusing on/delighting ourselves in Him, first and foremost (e.g. Matthew 6:33).

God bless you!!

~Deuteronomy
p.s. - the following passage, when properly understood and practiced, can be very helpful to us as we seek to delight ourselves in Him (or as it has also been put, as we seek to "practice the presence of God" in the moment by moment of our daily lives. Is it not both AMAZING and WONDROUS that our transcendent Creator, the King of the Universe Himself, wants to know us personally, and to be part of (the biggest part of) our daily lives :giggle:

1 Thessalonians 5
16 Rejoice always;
17 pray without ceasing;
18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

(While the passage above often seems overwhelming, especially v17, it's actually something that is simply wonderful instead, and we can talk about that too if you'd like :))

I don't think that there is anything wrong with you desiring to be married one day. After all, God is the one who ordained marriage. I would simply suggest that you focus on the "one day" part, as in living one day at a time. If marriage is God's will for you, then there will be some sort of required preparation. Just let him lead you, one day at a time.

There's nothing wrong with thinking about it, in my opinion. Just remember to always put Him first and don't get impatient. Impatience can have all kinds of bad consequences. Impatience was Sarah's mistake when she told Abraham to sleep her servant so she would bear him a child.

An elder of a church I once attended told me, if something must be done quickly, it's probably a mistake. That piece of advise has served me well.

Nothing wrong with having hopes, dreams and plans; it's only when we start thinking we're running the show that things go sideways. In other words, you don't have to stop thinking about it after putting it before God, just think about Him more.

Psalm 103
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul;
all that is within me, bless His holy name.

(then David shows us how...)

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and do not forget all His kind deeds-

(...and why)

Psalm 104
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul!

O LORD my God, You are very great;
You are clothed with splendor and majesty.

He (should, always, be) our first love.
Afterall, why would it please God to give you to an idol?

Many people misunderstand this verse. God does not give to us the desires that currently exist in our hearts. As we delight ourselves in Him, God actually places within our hearts good and holy desires. We begin to find ourselves made more and more into the image of God and His desires become our desires. Those things which were once of great importance to us no longer appeal to us because God has replaced them with far greater and eternal desires.
