I've read about nuclear testing in the Pacific about the veterans who were roped into observing while the blew up coral reefs etc.
The scariest thing would have been witnessing that mushroom cloud and knowing while it may not kill you outright, even if you are near it, you will get radiation poisoning and the entire region is now contaminated.
When it went off, the veterans reported that their entire world glowed white hot, so even their bones were illuminated, like it had x-rayed the entire place. They would have told everyone to evacuate the area, but I don't think everyone knew the danger.
Years later, there were sky high cancer and infertility rates of all those affected by the blast.
The ocean is far and wide, but now there are huge garbage patches of human waste, and plastic, and oil spills, and entire coral reefs dying from acidifcation. So, its like the great Deluge but in reverse, this time, all marine life is endangered.
People used to say 'there are plenty of fish in the sea' but now they don't dare say that, if you eat too much of it, you'd likely get mercury poisoning, if not plastic in your fish.
