The problem with this argument is that it assumes man's fallen condition proves he cannot respond to God's call. Jesus never taught that. Yes, mankind is sinful and needs God's grace. But Jesus repeatedly calls people to
repent, believe, come, hear, and follow Him:
Repent ye, and believe in the gospel. (Mark 1:15 ASV)
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 ASV)
If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. (John 7:37 ASV)
The "bad tree cannot produce good fruit" passage is about recognizing false prophets by their conduct, not proving that a person cannot respond to God's invitation:
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (Matthew 7:17 ASV)
Jesus consistently presents faith as the response God desires from those who hear Him:
This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (John 6:29 ASV)
God draws people, but Jesus also says people can refuse:
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself. (John 12:32 ASV)
And ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. (John 5:40 ASV)
If people were incapable of responding, Jesus' invitations, warnings, and rebukes would make little sense. Scripture teaches that salvation begins with God's grace, but Jesus also teaches that people are responsible for whether they receive or reject the truth He gives them.
