Hi NiNA,

The gift of tongues is a method of sharing the gospel across language barriers.

For example, if your native language is Spanish and I speak in English, then the spirit might convert the words that I speak into Spanish for you to hear. That is the gift of tongues.
Can you show any evidence from Acts 2 that what was being said 'in tongues' was 'sharing the Gospel' or that when Peter preached it was 'in tongues'?

Peter’s act of speaking in tongues in Acts 2 was not a moment of gospel proclamation but a moment of God‑directed praise. Luke says the crowd heard the apostles “declaring the mighty works of God,” which means Peter was glorifying God, not preaching a sermon. The miracle occurred in the ears of the hearers: people from many lands suddenly recognized their own languages as Peter spoke. What astonished them was not a message of repentance or faith but the unexpected experience of hearing a Galilean publicly magnify God in their native tongue. This sets the stage for Peter’s later sermon, but the tongues themselves were an act of worship that God used to gather and awaken the crowd.

For anyone to believe this as true you would first have to explain why someone should accept the glossolalia of the Pentecostals as New Testament tongues.

Are the modern day Pentecostal tongues the same as New Testament tongues?

Wansvic, is your claim confirmable??? Yes or No?
Sure. The bible is authentication.

What makes Acts 2 so striking is that Luke—who never hesitates to report tongues when they occur—says nothing about the three thousand new believers speaking in tongues. He carefully records the apostles’ tongues at the start of the chapter, then describes the crowd’s conversion through *intelligible* preaching, and then moves directly to baptism and fellowship. The absence of tongues at this decisive moment is not accidental; it is a deliberate narrative silence that shows tongues were not the expected or universal sign of receiving the Spirit.

To the contrary, Paul actually discourages the use of tongues in the gathered church, precisely because uninterpreted tongues do not edify anyone. His repeated instruction in 1 Corinthians 14 is that the church should prioritize prophecy—the gift that builds up the whole body through intelligible speech. Tongues, unless interpreted, create confusion and mirror the judgment pattern of Isaiah 28, so Paul restricts their use and elevates prophecy as the proper gift for congregational worship.

Paul never tells a tongues‑speaker to look for someone with a separate “gift of interpretation.” Instead, he commands the one who is speaking to *pray that he himself may interpret* (1 Cor 14:13). This shows that interpretation is not a second person’s supernatural ability to decode another person’s ecstatic speech; it is the speaker’s own Spirit‑enabled capacity to make his message intelligible. Paul’s instruction collapses the charismatic two‑gift model and reinforces his larger point: **intelligibility is the responsibility of the speaker**, and without it, tongues have no place in the gathered church.

Understand? The gift of tongues is NOT the ability to speak a foreign language. The gift of tongues is in the ear of the listener; it is when the hearer understands what is being spoken in his own language.
Paul explains many things concerning the miraculous manifestation of tongues. And when read without denominational glasses it makes perfect sense.

Paul reveals he prays and sings in tongues without understanding what he has said. (1 Cor. 14:14-15) This is personal communication between a man's renewed spirit and the Spirit of God for personal edification. (1 Cor. 14:4) This is the manifestation he discourages in a church gathering. (1 Cor. 14:15-19)

He then differentiates between the personal manifestation and speaking a message in unknown tongues that relies upon the gift of interpretation for edification of those in the church setting. (1 Cor. 14:26-28)

Those who speak a message in tongues during a church gathering don't typically give the interpretation via that spiritual gift. It does on occasion happen; however, as Paul explained: "If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Plain and simple ...

God did not leave the initial infilling of the Holy Ghost to human speculation. He provided a miraculous witness so there would be objective evidence that His Spirit had been received. Rather than relying on our opinions about another person's inward experience, it is wiser to accept the pattern God chose to reveal in Scripture.
How do you know it is from God?

The Devil will come in many forms working signs and miracles.
How do you determine which spirit it is?

God's pattern was always one of order and purpose.

Talking in a strange language that no one can understand and in a way that bypasses reasoning is not God's way.

God said if no one can interpret to keep silent.

1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

The interpreter is the individual or individuals being spoken to. If there is no one to speak to, then there is no purpose for the gift.

That isn't true. He didn't say that he prays and sings in tongues. He is arguing that if he did that, his mind would be unfruitful.

This is not true either. The gift of interpretation is not meant to interpret the gift of tongues.

Of course not, because the gift of tongues is in the ear of the listener, not in the mouth of the speaker.

A lot of people speak in an unknown tongue. Spanish people speak Spanish; French people speak French, and if they did so at my church, their language would be unknown to most of them. It doesn't mean they are speaking by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Again, the man speaking should pray that HE interpret.

The classic "speaking in tongues" is nothing but babbling nonsense.

The true gift of tongues has a purpose, which is to communicate from one to another. And why would this be needed? Because someone does not understand the speaker. So, the speaker speaks, and the spirit converts his words into a language that the hearer can understand. The speaker does not do this, but speaks in his own language. Yet the words come out in a language the speaker does not understand. Like the speaker attempts to speak in English, for instance, but the words come out in Spanish. The spirit makes this transition, not the speaker.

The babblers are nothing but fools pretending to have the gift of tongues. But for the one who truely has the gift, it's use is perhaps once in a lifetime.
