Only because they first were saved by God. From that, the Holy Spirit moved within them and repented them from the works of their hands, and they ceased from doing or desiring to do that, so God didn't destroy them.
Not in Jonah nor Matthew, only in the Catholic doctrine of Calvin.

In a sense it was overthrown.

For Satan and his minions were routed and God's Spirit took over the land.
Lol, nice try. The biblical word "overthrow" means to destroy. Sodom and Gomorrah were cities overthrown by God.

The very fact that God sent His word forth and the result was salvation means God's purpose was the salvation of Nineveh.
This viewpoint makes God a liar. He stated that he would overthrow Nineveh in forty days. Did God lie? Did God have every intention of overthrowing Nineveh in forty days? The last verse in chapter 3 tells us, "and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not."

Take scripture for what it states. If scripture goes against your theology, your theology is bad. Change your theology to align with scripture. Do not add to or take away from the clear reading of scripture to fit your theology.

I hope you arrive at that point some day.

No, it was a conditional warning, not His decree of purpose. . The purpose of such warnings is to incite repentance so that God can justly withhold the threatened punishment. Its God operating from the covenant of works, He said to Israel Jer 18

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

God did similar with King Hezekiah 2 Kings 20:1-6

What is actually reflected here is your inability to reconcile scripture. I can't be employing scripture and then be saying God is lying. I'm answering using scripture. Since no scripture negates another, when an apparent discrepancy arises, scripture must be reconciled. You may believe my understanding is wrong, but I'm never calling God a liar.

There was no condition stated. To add a condition is to add to scripture. God did not lie. He had every intention of overthrowing Nineveh in forty days. That is what scripture states. To fit your catholic theology, you have to add to the clear reading of scripture.

Scripture is reconciled. God did not lie. God repented from the evil that he said he would do unto them. God showed them grace only because they believed his word and repented. That is who God is.

For the sinner faced with the gospel of Jesus Christ, that sinner will be condemned if they don't believe God's word and repent. If the sinner believes God's word and repents, God will show them grace and cleanse them of their sins. It really is that simple. Calvin has muddied up the clear water of grace for some.

No. God actually had no intention of overthrowing Nineveh. That's my point. He sent His word to accomplish salvation. How do we know? We know because God's word always accomplishes its purpose, and salvation was the result. Ergo, God's purpose was not destruction, but deliverance.

It's really not that hard.

Did He successfully save them He died for ? Yes or No. He was sent on a saving mission Lk 19:10

10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Was He 100% successful in seeking and saving that which was lost ?
Why would you even suggest that it was Jesus that was a failure? Could it be a projection of your own failure to understand the true gospel?

Repent or else

Romans is addressed to the believers in Rome and is about how all sinners may be saved, which is by having faith in Jesus as Messiah, the Lord incarnate.
The introduction may say that but Paul focusses on the plight of Israel.

You along with everyone else cannot identify the subject of the letter to the Romans.

Romans 2:23-24
You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? For “the name of God is blasphemed among
the Gentiles because of you
,” just as it is written.

Why is Paul directly addressing the Jews this is first person?

Romans 2:25
For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law...

Paul is not talking in the first person to the Gentiles.

Unless of course you promote circumcision.

Romans 3:1-2
Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect.

Did you notice that Paul is talking about the Jews?

Circumcision is great in every respect!

So when does Paul start talking in the first person to the Gentiles?
