Hey Everyone,

I was following a new-to-me travel channel on YouTube, and I was really into everything the host was covering -- until she mentioned that for her, the best part of a particular trip was the underwater cave diving.

Now I have to admit. My palms start to sweat at the thought of dry (narrow) cave exploration to begin with. But when she mentioned UNDERWATER cave diving (and that the smallest, most challenging tunnels are her favorites,) I was about to have a full-blown anxiety attack.

I don't want to knock anyone's hobbies if they're into these things -- and I can handle walking through caves with plenty of space just fine. I even think it's cool when they have built-in stairs for tours, etc. But going through caves so narrow that you have crawl or creep like an inchworm, pray that you'll actually fit through the whole thing, and then hope to see daylight again when your excursion is through?! I don't think so!!

Add pitch black darkness and WATER into the mix and I am OUT, both visually and mentally.

A while back, a friend somehow got me hooked (for a week or so) on watching cave diving accident videos (particularly the John Edward Jones Nutty Putty Cave accident -- I'll spare you the details,) and I couldn't help but come to one conclusion.

WHY DOES CAVE DIVING (especially underwater) EXIST???

For the people who love these things, have at it, and all the more power to you!!! You are most certainly much more adventurous than I will ever be and I admire your spirit!!

But the thing I can't help but thinking whenever I watch a "Cave Diving Tragedy" is "Wow, this never would have happened if they had stayed at home watching TV!" (or posting on CC.)

However, I know we're all built differently and some people are just naturally drawn to things that require A LOT more faith than I have!!! (If you are someone who loves cave diving -- or the thought of it -- I would love to hear what attracts you to it!)

How about you?

* What are some things that make you ask yourself, "WHY does THIS exist?"

I know people could make this super spiritual and list things like atheism and unbelief, etc. but this thread is meant to be more of a discussion about hobbies, careers, gadgets and tools, vehicles, etc. that we find perplexing.

* For instance, do you ever find yourself asking things like, "Why would anyone do this???" (Parachuting, snowboarding, underwater basket weaving, etc.)

* Do you ever go in a store, look at a certain cooking gadget, appliance, tool, gimmick, etc., and think "Why does this exist?!"

I was thinking this yesterday when I saw some kind of charm for one's water bottle, "Who on earth would feel a need to spend money on this?!" And I feel the same with a lot of "As Seen On TV" products -- the ideas behind them often seem genius -- but the execution of the products always seem to fail.

* Do you ever see certain foods and think, "Who on earth would eat this??" (Tripe, headcheese, souse, etc.) "Why is this even available?!"

* Do you ever see ads or signs for certain places and activities and wonder why or if anyone actually goes there? (Does anyone still go bowling or to places like Top Golf, etc.?)

If you've ever looked at something and wondered why it's even there, this is the thread for you!! Tell us about things YOU think are pointless in existing.

But on the flipside, if you see something listed in anyone's posts that you happen to like and enjoy, give us your defense as to WHY it deserves to be there!

I'm looking forward to some very controversial answers! :)

I understand fidget spinners. I do not understand why we have so many kinds.

If you're so bored that you need a VARIETY, you need a real hobby. Or a life. Or maybe both.

And if your money is burning that much of a hole in your pocket, I will be glad to help you out by taking it off your hands for you. Anything to help out a friend.

Fleas!

Absolutely useless except as a plague on humans and animals.

I was in Florida years ago and swimming at Venice beach.
Suddenly, I felt this burning on my shoulders after I stood up in the water.

I knew I couldn't be sunburning that rapidly, because the burn was spreading.

People started running from the water and the beach.
Me included.

What the heck is this?

Sand fleas! Even when I dove back under the water, they persisted in biting me.

Unbelievable. I had heard of them but never experienced them. And don't ever want to again.

People fleeing a beach on a beautiful day because of sand fleas.

They only stopped biting when I went to the outdoor showers and sprayed them off under high water pressure.

I don't know about fleas, but they did figure out why mosquitoes. Mosquitoes used to be pollinators. Then some gene got damaged and they developed a taste for blood. Scientists found the defective gene. Unfortunately they can't fix all the mosquitoes. We know the problem, but have no solution.

Personally I believe that damage happened when Adam and Eve ate the fruit. But that's just a personal theory.

First I've heard that about Mosquitoes. Thanks.

At least in the case of Skeeters it can be said they serve as bat food.

Fleas ,not.

Ach wasps
Why should we have wasps when we have bees already...and bees can make honey
Both can sting...but wasps are deadly, a nuisance, and only good for pollinating figs.

Underwater woven baskets were what Maori made when they ran out of bull kelp, and also to trap crayfish etc,
Caving...well you know my feeling on that. The glow worms are cool to see but otherwise worming you way underwater in the dark isn't much fun. Though I suppose someone has to do it...plumbers...miners...channel tunnelers....

Wasps are very beneficial.
Paper weaver wasps are incredible engineers. Their nests are quite a feat.

Well they invented paper, which us humans copied I suppose.
It was first invented in China but people on CC were like no it wasn't the Chinese it was the wasps! As if the wasps just gave us paper. They didn't want to admit that perhaps the Chinese came up with the idea, maybe they had observed it from the wasps.

Well what about flight, did birds invent that as well? Nobody wants to admit a New Zealander Richard Pearse invented the first human flight? Before the Wright Brothers?

And black water rafting...is a kiwi invention too.
Question...why does New Zealand exist? I mean, most maps don't actually have New Zealand on it like we the invisible islands. Most people have never heard of us, and think we are crazy for naming mountains, or would prefer it if we or mountains just didn't exist.
Are we people, or are we birds? Why do kiwis exist when they can't fly?

Bees are very useful in New Zealand, after all, our parliament is a beehive. But wasps are a nuisance. We have the highest densities of german and common wasps in the world. Wasps have stung me. Wasps ate all our caterpillars so I didn't see ANY butterflies this year.
Actually now we are getting hornets as well, and the govt is warning us if we see any to capture them and destroy them as we don't want them invading as well.

Black water rafting
sky diving
bungee jumping
bowling
parachuting
Jet boating
snowboarding
mountain climbing
white water rafting
jet boating
live volcano seeing

They all exist for the benefits of adrenaline pumping, because people really need their adrenaline pumped, and extreme adventure adrenaline junkies benefits New Zealand's economy.

I tell you it's All About New Zealand. We are the middle of the earth. All bow to New Zealand the greatest country that ever

existed :D

I live in southwest Tennessee, with red wasps. Red wasps have no concept of personal space and a very irritable temper. They are not as strong as hornets, but they are just as cranky.

Come on down, I'll introduce you to them. I'm sure you will be best buddies.

Mosquitoes! Ugh!
That's one of those things I often ponder over and ask God "Why? I mean shouldn't the flood have knocked them out? If they served as food for animals on the ark, then shouldn't they have vanished after everything was said and done? Whhhhhyyyyyyy???"

Why do you think I live north of you?
Do you even know your geography? Personal space lol.

oh no the flood only knocked out the dinosaurs, or at least, decimated the population.
the mozzies hitched a free ride, they were too small to be invited 2 by 2 onto the ark. Also, their eggs may have got in the ark and hatched afterward.
After the flood when the water receded and there were puddles everywhere the mosquitos hatched and bred

God uses insects to set an example eg the ants and grasshoppers in Proverbs etc. Hornets, locusts, God used them when He sent the plagues.

I'll never forget reading about the Dustbowl in America. That was a lesson and a half in bad farming practises.

I couldn't agree more about fleas and mosquitos -- and thank you Lynx for bringing up this very interesting fact about the skeeters!! I guess it's like a lot of creatures before the fall that must have been vegetarian -- but obviously changed after humans sinned. 😢

One of the many oddball things about me that I have a hard time convincing people is real is why I don't spend much time outdoors. Not only am I sensitive to sunburn (even on cloudy days,) but I'm one of those people that any biting insect will find -- even indoors. I can be in a group of people and NO ONE else will get bitten except me, so they all think I'm making it up -- especially when it's tiny spider and and flea bites that no one else can really see.

I have some potted plants outside and have to wear gloves when I prune them, or I'll get microscopic bites all over my hands.

I absolutely hate it. I used to go on morning walks but would have to coat myself in 2 kinds of bug spray, and even then, I'd come home with bites on my scalp and ears. My feet and toes are also popular spots they like to feast on. Whatever is out there WILL find a spot to bite me. I was recently talking to someone in the medical field who was familiar with this, and it was a relief to find someone who knows it actually exists.

I had a boyfriend once who had lived in a household of animals that... wasn't the cleanest... and the fleas would hitch a ride on his clothes -- and hop on over to me. He lived with his parents at the time and I offered to help clean, but they were EXTREMELY offended at the thought, so it was just something I had to put up with.

Sometimes being single isn't so bad!

Wasp stung me on my toe and I couldn't work for a week. Huge blister, so shoes couldn't fit and I wasn't able to walk.

I made the mistake of gardening barefoot, or was it wearing only jandals. Don't do that, wear crocs at least. With socks

Red Wasp or Yellow Jackets..
I see no useful benefit to either.

When I see any paper wasp nest, I anniahlate (sp?) it.
You have to wait till it's dark, when wasps are not active, and pop it in paper bag, then stomp on it with not barefeet.

You could spray it with insecticide, but thats a bit messy/hazardous and you might not have a can of Raid or Mortein at hand.

Burning citronella candles, having mosquito nets, or using a fly swat/rolled up newspaper can help with mozzies apart from bug spray. The annoying thing is keeping them from going 'eeee' in your ear at night if they somehow get inside.
