Sounds really interestingOk I finished reading The Dictionary People
So Suze it's about the people who created the Oxford English Dictionary, which was 12 volumes back in the 19th century. It was like Wikipedia is today, a crowdfunded project. People sent in slips with different words on and the Oxford dons in charge of organising the dictionary in alphabetical order asked everyone to read books and send in all the words and the meanings they found, as well as quotes/sentences containing the words.
So it was a huge undertaking over several decades.
The author of this book Susan Oglivie, decided she would reasearch some of the biographies of the people who sent in the slips of words , find out their background and what kind of words and how many they sent in. The dictionary people were volunteers from all works of life.
Anyway it was fascinating and if you are a word nerd you'd like it. Its organised in chapters alphabetically so 'V' stood for Vegetarians and Vicars, both who contributed to the dictionary. Oh and chapter 'N' was for New Zealand! So it was nice to know some New Zealanders contributed words too. Mostly Maori words or flora and fauna words.
Well I've been reading some Australian books, I had been watching Kath & Kim again (research about Australia before I head to Sydney, get used to the accent etc) so one was called Look At Moi Ploise, and the other which I am in the middle of now is called Reckoning. It's a memoir by Magda Szubanski, who played Sharon in the Kath & Kim series.Sounds really interestingmight give it a go . Do u know what u will read next ?
I loved Cath and Kim , don't forget KelWell I've been reading some Australian books, I had been watching Kath & Kim again (research about Australia before I head to Sydney, get used to the accent etc) so one was called Look At Moi Ploise, and the other which I am in the middle of now is called Reckoning. It's a memoir by Magda Szubanski, who played Sharon in the Kath & Kim series.
She also played Mrs Hoggetty in the movie Babe. So far it's very interesting as she's half Scottish half Polish - her father saw some awful things in the war (Poland is where the Holocaust happened, Auschwitz concentration camps etc) and she explores a lot of her family heritage in the memoir, and also her comedy career, which took off after she appeared in some Australian sketch shows. She also had to deal with coming out as a lesbian which she tried to deny/scared to do so, so that's also part of it.
After that I will probably check out The fashion of Clueless, which is more of a coffee table book of photos of clothes/costumes from the teen film, that came out in 1995, when I was 15 so I was the perfect age for it back then. Just having a bit of nostalgia for the 90s/early 2000s..must be getting old!! There was something like 65 costume changes for Alicia Silverstone (the star) alone because she played a rich Beverely Hill-ite or Valley Girl and going shopping was her 'hobby'.
Why r u going to Sydney , if u don't mind me asking ?Well I've been reading some Australian books, I had been watching Kath & Kim again (research about Australia before I head to Sydney, get used to the accent etc) so one was called Look At Moi Ploise, and the other which I am in the middle of now is called Reckoning. Oh just for 4 days, visit my cousin, and sis roped me into helping out at the marathon. It's just across the ditch, but it will be exciting for me as I haven't been out of the country in 10 years plus never been to Sydney before. Why r u going to Sydney , if u don't mind me asking ?
I hope u have a great time , u could take some photos and put them on hereOh just for 4 days, visit my cousin, and sis roped me into helping out at the marathon. I shall check those writers out and take a look at the Sam Neil film , as for it being odd , all antipodean things r odd ! That's why I like themKel is a hoot (and great hunk o' spunk!)
You should see...My Brilliant Career with Judy Davis and Sam Neill in it. It's a bit old but its pretty good.
Yes the film industry has taken off over the past few decades here because its cheaper to film here and the locations (and tax breaks) make it easier, plus Peter Jackson really put us on the map as far as Middle Earth goes (Lord of the Rings series).
Can give you a whole list but I will put it in the Pros and Cons of New Zealand thread when I've had a think of what ones I've seen and recommend.
New Zealand writers -- short story writer Katherine Mansfield if you like colonial, turn of the century vignettes
Lynley Dodd, Margaret Mahy for children
Maurice Gee --he wrote for children and adults...Under the Mountain ...In my Father's Den...Plumb..I warn you that if you read a Maurice Gree novel that you're likely to have a dead body turn up in a creek at some point. He wrote about my hometown, but disguised the name as Loomis. Which is weird because who ever heard of a town called Loomis??
There have been some NZ authors that won the Booker Prize, like Elizabeth Catton, but I haven't read any of hers. The Luminaries looked way too fat, so I haven't tackled it....yet. Keri Hulme's The Bone People was an experience...
I'm not working at a bookshop anymore but if I was I'd be cluing you in on the latest as soon as stock arrives. Half of it will be pulp fiction ending up as remainders to eventually turn into toilet paper but I'm willing to give most books a try!
I'll do my best. I'm not a very good photo-taker though!I hope u have a great time , u could take some photos and put them on here.
Ha its not odd, I wrote that it's old! I mean...I think it was filmed back in the 80s but it was set in the colonial times.I shall check those writers out and take a look at the Sam Neil film , as for it being odd , all antipodean things r odd ! That's why I like them.
Oh gosh , that's not old , I still watch Bette Davis and Joan Crawford films ! Old is pre WW2 .Ha its not odd, I wrote that it's old! I mean...I think it was filmed back in the 80s but it was set in the colonial times.
Ordinary Australians exhausting themselves , collapsing , vomitting etcI'll do my best. I'm not a very good photo-taker though!
Besides, I think everyone's seen the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
What should I take a photo of? I don't do selfies.
Er okOrdinary Australians exhausting themselves , collapsing , vomitting etc. No one weeing or otherwise though please
