The catch: Taxpayers paid $154/night for EVERY room, plus meals. Occupied or empty.
Only 24% of rooms were used at one point. That’s $600+/night per person actually housed.

New Jersey is the current flashpoint. Gov. 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥's own administration disclosed that a software error at the Motor Vehicle Commission — tied to vendor IDEMIA — automatically registered 𝟔,𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 to vote, and roughly 400 of them cast ballots in elections since 2023. Dhillon gave Sherrill five business days to hand over the names, nationalities and addresses of everyone affected. New Jersey's answer so far: no. A Sherrill spokesperson accused the administration of "weaponizing the Justice Department," while Dhillon's office is openly weighing criminal charges — leaving noncitizens on the rolls for over a year after a state knows about it is a federal crime.
New Jersey isn't an outlier. Homeland Security has already flagged more than 𝟐𝟓𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐬 on voter rolls across California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada alone. And DOJ already has a Supreme Court win in its pocket: the justices reinstated Virginia's purge of roughly 1,600 suspected noncitizens after a lower court tried to block it.
Every state stonewalling DOJ's records request is betting the Court sides with them next time. Virginia already says otherwise.
