Would it change things for either of you if he was sacrificing it for God? Hypothetically, if God knew that the two of you, by your powers combined, would produce a super hero (err disciple) doesn't that seem like a worthy sacrifice? It really isn't that far from what has happened with many, going back to biblical times.

The above scenario certainly is hypothetical, but I think it leads to an entirely non-hypothetical conclusion. Following God's will perfectly results in perfect love. Following God's will closely results in close to perfect love.

If both people are seeking God's will, then there should be no "selfishness" concerns to ask this hypothetical man to stay. Remember... He CAN still say no, and that too may be God guiding you.

In the end... If you're adrift on the ocean in a row boat and spot the shore, do you pray to God "please bring me to shore Lord" or do you grab the oars and start rowing?
 
When I look at the people he has been able to help, I really DO feel that he is doing God's work. No superheros here. Just hardworking folks. :)
It was the right decision then. Still is. Who knows? Maybe he IS the one, but the timing just isn't right. I could never have asked him to stay here and he could never have asked me to leave my son alone after he lost his dad to wander the planet. Grown ups have to make grown up choices and they aren't always easy. There have been others, this was just one example.

And I agree with you about the rowing. That's why I posted this, to pick other peoples' brains about it. :) It's been on my mind that I have been taking that whole self-sacrificing love thing a bit too far and I need to cut it out before I end up with 72 cats. :)

Yep :) I really was addressing a hypothetical man and not suggesting that you shouldn't have let him go.

Well... on second thought, maybe you should go chasing him around the world? I'm sure that would be super attractive and most definitely get you the guy!
 
It sounds like a 'right people, wrong time' kind of situation, they suck for sure, it's good to use these kind of situations to check our response is coming from the right place and we aren't falling into bad habits.

I like this :) It is good to think about the drowning man from time to time, God is the great enabler, he helps us help ourselves, but we often forget.

Well if you aren't prepared to hop a few oceans.........how do you expect the guy to know you're interested!!!! :D :p :)
