The rod is just a measuring stick like a staff.
It's not used to BEAT people with...but to lead and guide
Proverbs 23:
11For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee. 12Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. 13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. 15My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. 16Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. 17Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

A "staff", among other things, was used like a cane, to steady the shepherd on uneven or stony terrain. If it had a "crook" it could be used to catch a sheep. A ''rod'', speaks of power; a weapon. It could prod a sheep out of the way to avoid tripping over it or to strike an unruly/dangerous ram across the nose to protect the shepherd from being "rammed" : This was and is an ever-present danger for shepherds. Even modern shepherds will tell you "never turn your back on a ram".. But here, it is speaking of "measuring"? I don't think so.

Oh ok

So I can beat up my kids with a stick?

How much should I beat them, I mean do I just break their legs so they can't run? Teach them a lesson?

Ok, and how old do they have to be so I can do this before they fight back and punch me in the face?

Again, nobody has any tips

Maybe should go to a different forum. What can expect from CC where possibly there are Pentecostal Holy-Roller types where carpet time is completely normal and encouraged?
I missed this. Discipline begins at home. If rules are not enforced there, the child has no boundaries and will not obey anywhere else. The Bible has the answer, as always. Give the disobedient child a spanking. Works a treat.

Am not the parent so can't.

Does it have to be mum or dad or both. Or the big brother/sister.
As long as it's done at home right?

How about the men who beat up their wives though. Can't explain that...maybe they overstepped the boundaries or didn't obey their husbands. Lots end up in hospital with injuries.

So... do you spank them with a rod?

How do you treat your dogs, do you have them on a leash with a choker? Do you whistle at them. like Captain Von Trapp did to his 7 children in the Sound of Music? They may obey you out of fear but they won't love you or want to be around you if that's all you do.

What we can do in schools is if the child is disobedient send them home to their parents. but if the parents don't 'spank' them or tell them off or give them a hiding or however method they use to beat/punish them there''s nothing the school can do except expel them if they keep on with that behaviour.

Then they'll just have to go to a different school and be someone else's problem.

My children are adults. My daughter has four of the most spoiled brats you would not want to meet. They are all autistic. Her idea of "discipline" is time out. The eldest boy is more or less OK. He really is autistic. The younger son is utterly rebellious. I saw the look on his face when he thought no one was watching.

I did not have to spank my children often. They knew better. I used my hand or a wooden spoon. I don't know why you brought up violence against women. I spanked my kids as did my then wife from time to time. I never lifted a hand against her.

People wonder why some kids are roaming the streets late at night, vandalising, carjacking and randomly stabbing people. The law is idiotic. A 13 year old girl was charged with 100 offences. It did not go to court because she apparently is too young to know the difference between right and wrong. Now organised crime gangs are employing children because they know that the kids are not going to be charged.

Discipline starts at home. It's in the New Testament as well.

'A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother." Proverbs 29:15
"Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Strike him with a rod, and you will deliver his soul from Sheol." Proverbs 23:13 & 14
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently." Proverbs 13:24

Teenagers should be corrected verbally. There comes a time when physical discipline is ineffective.

I don't have a dog. I walked a dog often for some years. It was a hunter and took off continually. The first time I walked it, the stupid beast tried to drag me in front of a passing car. The owner (now my dear wife) got a harness for it and that helped. Every time the dog took off, I'd pull back on the leash and make it sit. I did this continually until it quit pulling on the leash. The dog learned to walk with me and not take off.

So autistic children should just be spanked...or not spanking makes children autistic? What are you getting at? Your adult children are really bad parents?

Violence against women is often the same as violence against children.

I don't know why men beat their wives, but it happens.

Not sure how a hand or a wooden spoon is the same as a rod....

Aren't wooden spoons used for cooking/baking?

Wouldn't you be better off using a bamboo cane or a really long chopstick?

What do you do?

I thought of having furniture barriers or a string curtain.
Or maybe a hamster wheel for them.
signs dont work as they cant or dont read them.

If they dont listen and keep disobeying, do you just ban them for life or what. Tired of playing traffic cop. Solutions please!

The easiest way is to take them downstairs and lock them in the shackles that are attached to your wall.

The better way is to go outside and play something with them, something that requires lots of running. That way you'll wear the little angels out and they'll be less apt to run as much when you go back inside.

Also, maybe avoid giving them foods full of sugar.

Hey, I quoted Proverbs 23:11-17. I thought this was a "Bible" discussion in a "Christian" forum.
Violence starts in the home too.
Sounds like you disregard what the Bible says on this.

yea you quoted OLD testement not New Testament

What does NEW Testament say about treating/disciplining children?

Fathers don't vex your children or something like that? Elders teach your young?

This is a FAMILY forum on CC. Not a Bible discussion Forum. That's a different forum.

haha the library was in the basement, already.

I didn't have any shackles. I had a few power plugs around the place, but not enough for everyone to get charged.

Also I wasn't allowed outside at both schools at lunchtime, I was on duty in the library! The library was open during lunchtime, and they came in straight after they had eaten lunch.

Sometimes they would even bring their frozen juicies, and then chuck their plastic wrappers on the ground! Not even in the bin. I also remember picking up snotty tissues.

is that what you do.

Treat your kids like dogs. Ok...

Why yes, yes of course.
I put all my kids on leashes and take them for walks and let them go to the bathroom on people's lawns and stuff

I think most people would think I was kidding which I am, but apparently some don't recognize when someone is joking.

So... do you spank them with a rod?

Children should be spanks as needed according to God's Wisdom:

Proverbs 29:15-17
Scolding and spanking a child helps him to learn. Left to himself, he brings shame to his mother.
When rulers are wicked, their people are too; but good men will live to see the tyrant’s downfall.
Discipline your son and he will give you happiness and peace of mind.

Proverbs 23:12-14
Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Proverbs 22:15
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of discipline will remove it far from him

Proverbs 13:24
He who withholds his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him diligently

Proverbs 19:18
Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying

Welcome to the end times where so many have fallen away from the Lord and will not hear sound doctrine.

That's not NEW testament...times have changed brother.

Chastening isn't the same as BEATING a child.
