I think people are more panicked that interest rates on US bonds have increased 3.5-4.5% in the last five years. Since our debt is $40 trillion that works out close to $2 trillion which is half of the annual tax revenue for the US each year. For example, if you made 100k a year imagine that in just the last five years the interest payments on your debt had increased by 50k a year. We are now selling two year bonds and using the money made from those sales to buy 30 year bonds. That is the same thing as using a credit card to pay your car loan.
