yeah it's been a really bad year.
ALhtough last year was pretty bad too.

In 2026, severe and damaging floods have impacted at least 44 states

Notable 2026 Flood Events & Affected Regions

The destruction has spanned multiple regions, with several states suffering severe infrastructure damage, home inundations, and emergency rescues:
  • The Southwest & Plains: Remnants of Hurricane Polo swept through the region, bringing life-threatening flash floods, property damage, and road washouts to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. [1, 2, 3]
  • The Gulf Coast: Remnants of Storm Arthur dropped over 20 inches of rain in portions of Louisiana, alongside heavy regional flooding in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. [1]
  • The Midwest & Ohio Valley: Intense multi-day rainfall caused severe river and flash flooding, damaging homes and requiring dramatic water rescues across Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio. [1, 2, 3]
  • The Northeast & Northwest: Rapid, heavy precipitation events also broke records and caused flash floods further inland, affecting states such as Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Alaska
  • Nebraska: Omaha and Lincoln are currently recovering from historic, "100-year" flash flooding triggered by a massive storm system. [1, 2]
Overnight on September 30 into October 1, the remnants of Pacific Hurricane Polo combined with a highly saturated regional atmosphere to dump 4 to 6-plus inches of rain in just a few hours across Omaha, with some localized areas receiving up to 10 inches. Nearby Lincoln broke its all-time daily rainfall record by recording 6.15 inches
  • North Carolina:
  • North Carolina (The Outer Banks)
A massive, slow-moving nor'easter battered the Outer Banks with persistent 30 to 40 mph winds and destructive 15 to 18-foot waves. The continuous onslaught eroded protective sand dunes, resulting in extreme ocean overwash and catastrophic damage: [1, 2]
    • Infrastructure Collapse: Severe flooding completely buckled and cracked major portions of N.C. Highway 12. A critical 14-mile stretch of the coastal highway—including near the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge—saw roughly 500 feet of pavement entirely washed out or undermined, isolating Hatteras and Ocracoke islands from the mainland. [1, 2, 3]
    • Home Destructions: The intense beach erosion left oceanfront properties on stilts incredibly vulnerable. In Buxton, a dramatic series of coastal collapses occurred where six beachfront homes collapsed entirely into the ocean over a single 24-hour period. Severe shoreline losses are also threatening oceanfront homes further north in Rodanthe and Corolla. [1, 2, 3, 4]
    • Community Disruptions:
On Tuesday, September 29, torrential rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Polo pushed the McLeod Dam—a 20-foot earthen dam located near Garfield in northwestern Doña Ana County—to the brink of imminent failure. Floodwaters completely overtopped the dam wall, eroding portions of the structure and threatening to send a massive wall of water down the valley that could wash away homes and a large section of Interstate 25. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Current Status and Evacuation Updates
  • Emergency Evacuations: The National Weather Service issued a rare Flash Flood Emergency, prompting local police to go door-to-door using loudspeakers to order the urgent evacuation of over 1,000 residents. The affected communities downstream included Hatch, Garfield, Salem, Rincon, and Placitas

The 2026 U.S. wildfire season is substantially outpacing historical benchmarks, tracking roughly 40% to 60% above recent averages.

As of late September 2026, wildfires have consumed over 8.5 to 8.6 million acres across the country. This year-to-date total has already surpassed the typical full-year historical average of approximately 7.0 million acres, solidifying 2026 as the most destructive wildfire season by area burned in more than a decade. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2026 Statistics vs. Historical Averages
