Actually, there is language in the Garden of Eden, revealing that in doing the things which seem right to us; we believe that we are like God, and that we would not die if we personally chose sin even though God said not to partake of knowledge of good and evil. What we did not know when we made that choice to sin (gaining also the knowledge of evil), we died into sin. This was and is Satan's deception. So to answer your question, when 'we' chose to sin, that is when we made ourselves like gods who believe power of God is in our own hands to do what we think is right (sin).
When we choose sin, following Jesus is not on our mind; sin is on our mind.
