Are tattoos and piercings bad?? I've had some people tell me that they are, but I've had others tell me that they aren't. There are a couple members on staff at my church that have tattoos, but I dunno. I'm really into them, and there are a couple things I wanna get done, if it doesn't go against God. Basically, I want something (possible Psalms 34:18) tattooed on my wrist, a bar in my ear, my tongue, and my bellybutton pierced. Is that going against God's Word though, since I'm marking my body up? Opinions are appreciated.

It comes down to your own conviction. I would pray about it. What do you think God would want you to do or not do? What does it mean to you, to get or have those things. The following is something I personally keep in mind...

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body," 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

That's the verse that was going through my head too. :)
I know my reasons for wanting to make those changes to my body.
But, I'm not sure if they go hand in hand with God.
I'll definitely be praying about it.

I think you are going about it in the right way. It's good to question things and pray about them before making decisions that are hard to change. YOU will be blessed for that. The desire to do what is right in the Lord's eyes is also very precious :) Keep it up! By the way, I love your signature!

Are tattoos and piercings bad?? <...> Is that going against God's Word though, since I'm marking my body up?
My philosophy is this - if you ask if something is wrong, someone will be willing to agree. This is especially true on the net, where you don't have a personal relationship with a mentor, just opinions from strangers who may not have your best interests in mind. Instead of bad/good, let's keep in mind some basic principles.

It's simply not true that the body in its original form is perfect and any modifications are necessarily bad. For one, we are born with imperfect bodies and sometimes require modifications to live; e.g. some birth defects require surgery if a child is to live beyond a couple of days. Obviously, ornamental body modifications don't have the same purpose, but we need to get beyond the idea that the body we're given is necessarily pristine in its current state and that any adjustments are bad - I don't think it's realistic...

... or biblical: God commanded a very "interesting" body modification for males, for instance; e.g. Genesis 17:13. Because it was part of a covenant with God, they underwent an extreme bodily modification. It may seem normal these days because some cultures do it to most of their male children, but it's extreme. I'm certain that if God had given them the choice of a nice wrist tattoo, they would have jumped at the opportunity. Did God command them to defile their temples? Quite to the contrary, he found glory in this.

Concerning the passage in 1 Corinthians 6, we must read the context. Going up just one verse, we read:

All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
If this passage is applicable to tattoos, etc., why did Paul say he's talking about sex, apart from all other sins? In the next chapter, Paul continues talking about sex, marriage, etc. A little later, he even says:

Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.
I'm not saying that body mods are good, neutral, or bad, but you've got to be careful. I think what you say, that you'll keep praying, is really the only way to approach it. Otherwise, you'll get strangers like me saying that you should just go ahead and do it.

Well God said to Moses to tell the Isrealites this: "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD." Levitcus 19:28

I don't want to be rude about it, but the same chapter also says:

Do not mate different kinds of animals.
Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.
Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it.
Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
<...>
Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them. I am the LORD.
Anybody who's worn mixed fabrics, if they decide to quote the tattoo verse, is setting up a stumbling block for themselves as well as others. This is the time for fear and trembling, not "hey, there's a verse about tattoos in here."

It not a salvation issue. You won't not be saved anymore but god tells us things for a reason. If you get a tat and discover the design you got is a false god or has ungodly meaning that would be bad. The bible says we are in the world but not of it. We are supposed to be different than the world and not do what they (secular, non believers) do so we can be an example. The bible talks about christians as a bride of christ and its also a desicion to be pure for jesus. I have tatoos from before being saved but none since. Falls into spending money on tat instead of using our money to help advance the kingdom of god. Where your treasure is there shall your heart be also. The closer I have gotten with god I have seen the disire for certain things grow weak. I personally don't desire another tattoo. It has to be a conviction of yours. If you do get a tat you won't lose salvation. If you don't do it because you are setting yourself apart for god. There is no wrong or right answer for you. Pray, wait for convictiin from the holy spirit. If you get one your not any less of a christian. I would study carnal minded vs spiritually minded subjects. Christians should teach and rebuke in love not judgement but people do judge by appearance so pray and think before reacting to any idea or decisions about anything in life.

My tattoo definitely wouldn't be anything against God. Like I said, if I did, it would probably say Psalms 34:18 on my wrist, or something like that. That's one of the verses that has helped me through some of the toughest times of my life and has constantly reminded me that I CAN make it through because I have God on my side.

I'm definitely praying about it though. Thanks for all the replies! :)

I thought about putting scripture as a tat before to. Thinking it would help share my faith. At the same time if you believe in end times and the tribulation and such, christians are persectuted now and wil get worse. Your tat may be biblical but some people may take offense. Not saying you are or would be but we can't do gods will by contadicting his word. If bible speaks against tats even a scripture tat is contradiction. Just something to think about as to how someone else may view it. Like I said I thought about it for me to and moved away from it. I personaly would like a big miral of jesus coming out of the tomb or something but a tat is permanant. Either way just givin you something to think about not judgeing a fellow believer. Its a big decision. Go with what you feel in your spirit

I agree with burakhmalachi, but its not about it being an inconvenience to others, but rather it later on becoming an inconvenience to you. There might not be anything wrong with it, but your preferences and opinions may change in the future and you won't be able to take it back. Instead try getting a wrist band or poster or wallpaper or something to just remind you. God bless

Plus that reference is always taken out of context. It's talking about in reference to mourning for the dead. Like in memory tattoos

Bad spiritually? Depends on the tattoo, but the very notion of getting one = no.

They're not exactly awesome for your physical health, but you could do much worse to your body.

I didn't bother to read through all the posts (it's late), so I'm probably just reiterating what others have said. But there's my two sense anyway!

I'm not pro- tattoos or piercings but I have many friends and family members with them. The only thing I really wanted to add here is about the belly button ring. Why do you want one? I thought about getting one once... But it's not something that is normally viewable.. So you'd have to be pulling up your shirt or wearing belly shirts to show it off and in my opinion that's something that Christian girls shouldn't be doing. That's upping the temptation level for the men around you. I wouldn't want to be the center of someone's lustful thoughts. So just keep that in mind!

I honestly never thought about it that way! I was thinking more for summer and the beach, because they're cute. I didn't think about the rest of the time. Thanks for posting that. I'm definitely reconsidering.

I have one ear piercing in both ears and I like wearing earrings. There are so many cute earrings out there and I love them. I don't see how they COULD be a problem. Unless there's tongue, lip, eyebrow....yuck...they cause teeth and other issues (I'm sorry if I offend anyone with those kind of piercings. It's nothing against you personally and I don't think it's a sin for you to have them...I just do not prefer them. :) ). Now nose piercings I'm not against either, I personally wouldn't do one because it sounds like more of an inconvenience than something cute. And tattoos? I'm not against them as long as they don't have occult or satanic symbols on them. Once again, I personally wouldn't get one either. Because once it's there, it's there. So when I do "tattoos" I go 110% fake. :p

Don't apologize! I try to dress the way a Christian should dress -- modestly. You're right when you say I'd have to make some adjustments to that if I got my belly button pierced. I actually really appreciate you pointing that out! :)

i have had 16 piercings, 3 tattoos and working on some 2 more.

The most important thing i can really say is if you want something wait, especially tattoos. I have always waited at least a year before i have ink laid down. When i come up with an idea, if i can stay passionate about it for at least a year i feel comfortable with getting it laid.
