Cheer up! No matter how bad it may seem now, we know how the story ends.....eternity in heaven with God. What are a few short unpleasant years compared to that?
And you dont have to wait until then to be happy. Just tickle yourself or something.
Because we are living in a world where we don't belong. We long to be with the Lord, but so often try to fill it up with the stuff of earth. Shifting our focus from ourselves to Him is the way to go.
It's scientifically proven that our brains are programmed with a negativity bias, put there since the cave man days to help our ancestors survive and not be eaten by predators or die of starvation, etc. But now days there are fewer threats, and we live longer and easier now days, but the ancient survival instinct to fear things and find problems to worry about is still there. When there aren't any direct problems to worry about, we start to worry about minor things that can't kill us, and they turn into ugly phantoms in our minds that make us unhealthy and make us feel distant from God when we pray.
Of course that's not to say we can't learn to be happy more. There are always ways to rewire your thought patterns over time and retrain yourself to notice the good in your life and the good in the world more, and focus less on the bad. Everyone can learn this at any time, no matter the outward circumstances.

It certainly helps knock us off our high horse, humble us up a bit. Like when we see or feel pain or suffering, for ourselves or for others? It makes us be able to empathize, and may give us the motivation to help them- as we are driven by strong emotions- for better or for worse!
When I'm feeling down, I try to remember a line from a Switchfoot song- "The shadow proves the sunshine." Just like there is good to combat evil, remember that there is happy to combat sad .
Because we feel unfulfilled by something. People are wired to be discontent with what they have. If you want to be happy, why not start by being thankful for what God has given you? Looking at all the blessings God has given us tends to make my mood lift when I'm unhappy. It reminds me that I am loved, that whatever bad thing happened will pass, and that our Father is greater than anything that made me unhappy. Hope this helps you too.
I love Julliana's answer. I think it sums it all up in the briefest way. To quote:
