Someone once told me it is symbolism, showing that women must submit to men as they are part of a man, but not sure!

Just a guess...but since God made man from the earth, using part of him was essentially using the same materials.
And think of the symbolism...man gives up part of himself to have a wife. She is flesh of his flesh, bone of his bone. And this makes sense because of what Paul said in Ephesians 5:28-33.
And God said the two shall be one flesh...quite literally! I think it's also symbolic of Jesus and the church--He gave His body for His bride.
I think there may be a question in the translation of the word "rib". Could it really mean "side"? Did Eve begin, literally, as half of Adam? This idea makes all of it take on a new significance. I think before sin, woman was made from half of man, equal in every way, and husband and wife unified in all things.
Of course, sin changed all that, as we know. Just some ideas to kick around.

lol All in good fun. Honestly I don't know. But it symobolizing the unity between man and women is prolly the best bet.

I think symbolism is key.......there is definitely a reason for God taking a piece of the man to make the woman. I believe that this connection has more value and depth than most of us understand, and for all you men out there, you all have much more responsibility than you might get as well, because of this connection.

Lilith is a non-biblical myth. The way Gensis is set up doesn't refer to God making a women before Eve, but emphisizes what's been said. This is Hebrew literature, and in no way refers to God making a women before Eve.
