Hey guys. I had a debate with my sister today about evolution and creationism.

Since turning to God and becoming Christian, I firmly believe God created us all. However my sister believes otherwise.

I'd like to hear more arguments for the creationism side. Is there any outside of the bible?

Just tell her to read the bible. In there she will find all the proof she could ever need. challenge her to read it and to believe the same thing when she is done. ;) God is really really good at answering these kinds of questions in the most beautiful never forget kind of way

You see, her argument is the bible was written by man. She won't read it, unfortunately. :(
 
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16, ESV.

On the creationism vs evolution thing, God obviously created the Earth. However, many people tend to get the facts mixed up and go all the way and say that evolution as a whole is bogus, when it is not. Evolution refers to the changing of life over time. Adaptation and all that. That DEFINITELY happens. I just don't believe that we evolved out of monkeys. Neither does the Bible. Genesis 1:1 states "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth." Doesn't really get any clearer than that.

I don't really understand why in society today that faith and science have to go against each other. I personally think the two can coinicide.

Why do you believe evolution and God are mutually exclusive ideas?
 
Until evolution can explain how life begins and where consciousness comes from, I don't see how there can really be a debate between evolution and creationism.

There are so many scientific proofs to back up Creationism! If you want a really comprehensive breakdown of the biology, geology and history behind Creation I suggest you check out Ian Juby. He has done a huge 24 part series that beaks everything down in an understandable and interesting way. Complete Creation, Second edition

I've had the chance to hear him talk and ask him questions and he is a really down to earth human being who is all about making intelligent debate not simply regurgitating facts at people. He is also a Christian and uses scripture throughout to help you back your faith.

He also does little bite sized CrEvo rants, where he take a topic that has come up or been asked and do a quick 6 - 10 min video, where he again breaks it down to the science CrEvo Rants (Creation/Evolution rants)

One of the problems that come with evolution explaining consciousness is that there is no complete agreement on what consciousness is. Evolution will never explain where life came from because that is a prerequisite of evolution to start. Abiogenesis would be the field that would describe how life can arise from non-life.

Exactly my point!

What we're really arguing here is if there was a literal 6 day creation or if it is allegory to easily explain God's power and providence over all things.

That really just comes down to pure opinion and quite frankly what you NEED it to be. Do you need it to be literal in order to believe it? Do you need it to be allegory in order to believe it?

Or does it not matter at all and you simply believe that God has providence over all things and are content to leave it at that?
 
The debate on evolution vs creationism can actually be simplified, with the two viewpoints going hand-in-hand.

For example, one may believe in the natural and scientific process of evolution, as observed among certain animal and plant species.
However, that does not exclude the perspective that a superior power (i.e. God) or "intelligent designer" has provided and/or triggered the means for evolution to take effect.

Therefore, much like a farmer and farmland, God may be viewed as the farmer, and the end-results (growth, development and harvest) the scientific by-products of the farmer's work.

I'd recommend 'Christian Beliefs - 20 Life Transforming Truths' by Wayne Grudem. Get the DVD and a study guide. Do all 20 of course but there is one session that should enlighten you and your sister better.

Session 4. What is creation?

Wayne talks about creation probably more in depth than other speakers. He even talks about human theories (Materialism, Big Bang, Evolution etc) and explains what each theory entails. He also contrasts Biblical creation and the human theories.
 
I think trying to give natural explanations for a supernatural event, is missing the point entirely. It's a category error.

Genesis 1-3 is a supernatural event. Why should we try to explain it on a naturalistic basis? That would be like saying the Resurrection was just a function of the laws of nature. It would no longer by "definition" be supernatural. To be supernatural, is to be beyond the scope of nature.
 
I personally recognize the reality of biological evolution, because there is absolutely overwhelming scientific evidence for it. Let's remember that God commanded that "the earth bring forth" plants and animals, he didn't pop them into existence out of nothing. Sounds a lot like guided evolution to me.

God is the author of both the bible and the universe, so these two revelations cannot contradict each other. I believe the "days" in Genesis actually refer to long periods of time; geologic eras. If you read Genesis in this way you will find remarkable parallels with the history of earth as explained by modern science. God is the creator and sustainer of the universe, he authored the laws of physics and guided the evolutionary process from start to finish.

However, I reject the ideology of darwinism, which says that evolution is unguided and without purpose. God ordained and guided evolution to bring about all life on earth, e.g "let the earth bring forth".

My view is that of BioLogos. By the word of God the earth brought forth life. This is entirely compatible with the account in Genesis.
