Does the word "fetish" make you feel yucky?

Often I'll hear people mention something they are really in to as their "fetish".

I have always heard that word associated with rather yucky things, hence to me it has negative connotations, and shouldn't be associated with non-yucky things.


Is it just me, or does this word feel yucky too?
 
Yeah, I often associate the word "fetish" with seedy sexual practices or various forms of perversion.

I prefer the term "turn-on" in lieu of "fetish." It communicates the same feeling, but does not evoke the same level of awkwardness.
 
It does have a rather negative connotation and can make even unyucky preferences seem sleazy. When I hear the word these days, Fifty Shades of Grey pops into my head.
 
I actually think of CSI. I first learned the word "fetish" from Gil Grissom...go figure.
 
I mean I understand what the word is normally used for, but I don't have a problem with it. I mean it's normally a sex thing, but if done within marriage it seems fine with me.
 
I collect/really like shoes and I've heard people say things like, "I have a shoe fetish". To me, that doesn't mean you're just a fan of shoes. It conjures up visions of someone who might break into your house, steal your shoes and do stuff with them that might make you never want to wear them again.

However, I would have to agree with Nautilus in that if you're married and you want to wear a gummybear in your belly button and have your spouse call you King/Queen Bombula of the Gummy Tribe, I don't feel the need to judge you. But I don't want to hear all about it or see the pics on Facebook either.

Its hard to find the proper words I noticed in that other thread to get a point across without being offensiv. Let the real begin

Nautilus: I know what you mean. There are some things I'd like to say over there, but I want to be tactful so I want to give it a little more thought. Real is emotionally/mentally mature/healthy as far as I'm concerned.
