I could really use some thoughts, advice or especially past experience if anyone has it to offer. My wife and I are staring down divorce of a 21 year marriage. I am a Christian man, I am of course not perfect and have made many mistakes in life but I do love the lord. My wife says she is a Christian and I believe she believes but she often does not live like it unless it is an issue she can use to benefit herself. She does pray, she says she has prayed often for our marriage but I honestly cannot see where she makes any effort to engage in a Christian marriage. My wife says she loves me and does not want to get divorced but in years past has bragged to friends about how she can't wait to be rid of me. I honestly still love her and likely always will but the pain of this relationship is tipping the scales past any love for her I have.

A little background on our relationship: When Mary and I first got together she was very demanding and jealous of my time. She really didn't like me going out with friends or doing much of anything that was without her. If I would want to go out with guy friends for buddy stuff she would typically counter with lets do something together instead or can I go even if it was more of a male type thing. Eventually friends fell away and it was me and her. There came the time she wanted to move in together, I didn't feel like it was right or the time but she was very persistent and unrelenting. I gave in. So it went for us getting married at 19 and 22 years old and the timing of our two sons. All these things I didn't feel I was ready for but I gave into her with no real regret because I did know that I loved her very, very much and ultimately wanted to make her happy. This type of behavior is still very predominant today. My wants and needs do not matter. If I express that I am feeling unloved or I need things, often simple things, she dismisses my feelings. If she doesn't deem them necessary or legitimate than neither should I.

Mary comes from an abusive home. There was no real love in the house. When we were dating and I would spend time at her home I was often horrified or turned off by the behavior of her family. Her father was sometimes physically abusive to her mother or others but there was almost always shouting, cursing, screaming, disrespect and fighting. This was constant. It was almost like white noise before it was all over. If they were communicating it was very often with hurtful, belligerent language. I expressed my concern to Mary and her answer was that this was just how they love each other and the way they do things but it will never be that way between us. Being young and feeling that Mary really loved me I believed it. I felt good in that I could give her a much more loving environment than she was raised in and felt she would appreciate it. Within about a year of us being married it started showing up in our house. Fighting over stupid things way too often, she was yelling on a daily basis and profanity was part of how she communicated to me. I hated it, it was often like torture. I made my views very clear but it continued until it was just a part of life being married to her. As time went I would often withdraw myself because I would rather be alone than be involved in a bunch of yelling.

When things started to really change for me was after we had kids. We had a conversation where I said I thought we should go out and spend some time alone together as a couple. She acted almost horrified at the notion and expressed the sentiments that she would miss our son too much, that she didn't believe in pawning kids off to grandparents and that once you have kids, the husband and wife relationship disappears in lieu of a family relationship. She also told me in that time frame that a husband and wife "didn't have to do 'things' to show love, that being together was enough" She didn't understand and was hostile to the notion that a husband and wife should work on their relationship or really even have one. This person who fought so hard for us to have this ultra close relationship was gone, morphed into someone who didn't think we should have one outside of mom and dad. I understand these feeling sometimes come about after children but this was such a radical turn around it was breathtaking. I felt completely abandoned. She has since expressed that she was wrong for feeling this way in those years but her behavior really hasn't changed. While she enjoys us going out for dinner or drinks sometimes, she still largely refuses to put any work into building, growing or maintaining a relationship. Through the years I increasingly expressed that I do not feel real loved and that my wants and needs don't matter but there is no response from her outside of how ridiculous it is. This may sound exaggerated but honestly, I can not think of a single time I have ever expressed a want or need or expressed that I was hurting and she took it seriously.

One of the real low times for me came about 5 years ago. I had a bad blood clot in my leg when I was a child and have had circulation issues with it through the years. I got to a point where my leg was agonizing. It would swell to the limits of my pant leg. It was solid dark purple and cellulites scarred between the ankle and knee and I had large open, bleeding, oozing ulcers all over it that would not heal. One four inches long and wide. The doctors told me the venous structure in my leg was badly damaged and that my options were to get off my feet or complicated, risky surgery to replace the primary deep vein in the leg with a synthetic one. I was working 10+ hour days standing on concrete as a mechanic. Mary was extremely apathetic to the situation. She was not helpful and was even hostile to me changing jobs where I could work 40 hours a week for good but less money. She later said she didn't know it was bothering me that bad??? In that time I had horrible depression. My leg for a couple of years was getting worse with leaking, infected ulcers that were getting bigger not healing, I was very scared for my future and thought I might loose my leg, my marriage was falling apart and everyday I was in agony getting up and working 10 to 12 hours on my feet. One morning I was sitting on the edge of the bed and we had a brief hostile exchange. I lost it and started crying like a baby, I broke down. I told her with tears in my eyes that I was falling apart, don't you even care. She replied "I care but I'm not going to help you wallow in your own self pity" To this day she contends that this was justified and that I was making things hard on myself by being a drama queen. I eventually applied for and received Social Security disability which literally saved my life.

Fast forward to today, our boys are 15 and 18 and Mary and I live largely separate lives. She still wants to control and keep track of my life but doesn't want to be a part of it. I have had questions about infidelity on her part which she refuses to take seriously despite very serious indicators. I have swallowed more abuse than I want to discuss. I am not perfect but honestly feel that by a 10 to 1 ratio I take it over give it and usually have to be provoked very badly. Our most substantial conversations are our fights and she refuses under any circumstance to talk about or work on our marriage. I ask and ask her to talk, bring things to the table to make our marriage better, work on things, try to come together with me but she will not and is full of excuses as to why she wont. She says she doesn't know of anything to talk about or anything to do. She says whatever she does isn't good enough so she's not trying. She usually turns her back and walks away from me while I am talking if we get into an exchange about working on our marriage. She tells me she doesn't want a sex life with someone with as much baggage as me. If we have a big, ugly blow up fight, I am beside myself upset and hurt. Five minutes later I hear her laughing and cracking up at things on TV. She says there's no point to allow herself to get too upset. We have been to counseling twice and she has been to counseling for anger issues and such twice. I have been once for depression. None of which made any improvement. I'm honestly willing to leave the past in the past and look forward but she will not talk, much less work on building a marriage. I HONESTLY have done everything I know to do. I cannot think of anything. I have tried being very easy going, giving and understanding, I have tried being tough and used the submissive wife approach, I have expressed pain and agony over our relationship and racked my brain for any words to use. I hate divorce, but I have spent a decade in depression and pain over her refusal to build a marriage with me and I see things still deteriorating not getting better. The bible's says many different things of divorce and means different things to different people. I think divorce is wrong and isn't supposed to happen but I can't do this pain anymore and if it's going to happen eventually I'd rather it happen now while I still have a few years(I'm 43) I crave someone to love and love me like oxygen. I am trying to get an appointment with a divorce attorney to gain some understanding of the legal process. The only(worldly) hope I see for our marriage is to try a separation and see if she decides what is most important to her. But I understand the chances are that separation will lead to divorce. My first choice is for her to want to build a marriage but I can't keep doing what we've been doing. The pain is overwhelming I'm not a quitter but this is no longer a rough time but rather a decade or more that I haven't been myself and clouded in deep depression. Do I resolve myself to move on or face living till I die like this.

I'm real sorry that you are going through such a tough time.
Her wanting you only for herself that can stem from insecurity because I was like that myself in my marriage: i felt insecure which resulted in jealousy and demanding. She dismisses your feelings and your needs I believe she was treated like that as well in her home with her parents. The root of the abusive treatment from her childhood is still there and I believe that needs work.
You mentioned that you've been to counselling. Was that counselling with christians or non christians? The reason I asked this is because, one day I head a man's testimony on a christian channel.
He had struggle through 20 years of marriage. They were both young christians in the Lord. They went for counselling and receive professional counselling from a christian counsellor who runs his counselling business for the public. At the end of the counselling sessions, she packed up and left. He was devastated and was depressed for a while but he finally came through the depression with the help of God and started spending alot of time reading the word of God. And he realised that the counsellor had not counselled them in the ways of the Lord. He felt that if the counsellor had advised them on the ways of the Lord, his wife would be with him today. He was urging anyone who was going through a situation like his to seek christian counsellors who could show the Lord's way.
You said you think divorce is wrong and that's right thinking because God feels the same. Could you make another attempt to seek christian counselling?. If she doesn't want, could you just do it for yourself, for your own well being at this moment?
I'll be praying for your situation.

Your situation is a very hard one, My prayers are with you.. Seems the questions are ones you need to prayerfully answer for your self. I do know there are probably good things that have kept you together for this long. Sometimes we look for the things that would justify the option we have open to move us to a situation that seems more pleasant. Sometimes we use someone else's fault and failures as the reason for our lack of contentment. I am not saying your issues are not real. I can see there is much hurt and a long history of disappointment and frustration.

Only advise I would have is Philippians 4. sometimes when all we see is the bad in someone and a situation that is all we will ever be shown.

Sometimes when you look for the good in things then all you can see is good.

divorce is more painful then the pain you are suffering now. divorce will effect your children the rest of their lives.

I have heard the saying.. If nothing changes nothing changes..in reality God gives us power through the Cross to change only one thing.. Ourselves.

believe it or not you could make yourself happy in a miserable marriage (like the disciples found joy in shipwreck, beatings, imprisonment) and bring Joy to your family by finding your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self control in Christ. You wife can not give you these things only God can.

If she is divorcing you there is not alot you can do except endure..

Wives are commanded to respect their husbands.. this is not a command to men to make their wives respect them.. It is given to women so they will provide for the mans need to be respected.. Since it is her responsibility to do all that she is told even if sometimes a man is behaving in a way that is not deserving of respect a women still should give it undeserved..

Likewise as a man you are commanded to love your wife, even if she is not lovable. all you can do is obey what has been commanded to you as a man. When we take responsibility for our selves and do our part we have peace in spite of the circumstances. Sometimes that peace, love Joy flows from God through us and brings healing to our relationships.

Divorce is incredibly devastating to children (I know from my experience as a child). I love my children very much and would die for them. That is why watching that movie "The Hunger Games" was so difficult. I wish I could have volunteered in place of my son who fought in Afghanistan. (He made it back without a scratch. Three members of his unit did not. Their parents will never have dinner with their son again.)

If you are sitting on the fence and need something to tip your decision, please give some consideration to your children and their needs.

This breaks my heart. I have had many problems in my marriage as well and I think one reason I have stayed is because of our daughter. She would be heart broken if I left her daddy. But we are trying to work through things. I did not notice, may have missed it, but have you tried counseling? Even through your pastor? It may help. I hope you stay together.

I want to add that this is amazing. I don't think I have heard many people with this much feeling for their children. Except on movies, of course. This is amazing that you feel this way. I think more parents, not just fathers, but PARENTS, should be more involved and loving to their children. Today we do not see this as much as we should. People are too wrapped up in their self to really show the love to a child that a child deserves. Many kudos to you.

Wow, that is really tough....sounds like she has emotionally abandoned you :( .

Counseling would help but you have to stay with it for a while. But she may be determined to remain emotionally and physically distant; even if you live in the same house. She may like some of the benefits of living together but refuses to live in a genuine husband/wife relationship. Sex is not the most important part of marriage, but it is an important part. This doesn't sound like a marriage but just convenient living arrangements for her :( .

Yes, consider the children....your interaction with them would definitely decrease and they'd suffer emotionally if you divorced.

Do you have a pastor or close Christian friend that you can talk to? This could immensely help you come up with a plan. I can see how you're suffering here and I'm so sorry your marriage is not working out.

My husband and I know of a Christian couple with a relationship similar to yours...the husband has decided to remain in the marriage as long as the children need the parent relationship, then he says he'll leave. How very sad. But I don't think his wife loves him anymore and would like to see him move out. She says she's a Christian and I think she views divorce as OK, if her husband leaves. So she is making his life miserable to try to get him to leave.

I would definitely get some outside counsel-Christian counseling for you (hopefully she would agree to it also) and also some legal counsel.

Praying for you brother for healing for your heart and comfort and direction...may God lead you in this trial.

I am sad for you because of the situation you are in...if your wife is not bearing the fruits of God's love then she is not a christian no matter what she says...and you are only to remain with her if she wants to remain with you as a devoted Christian and not how she would like you to be and you are to separate from her if she is behaving wickedly or worldly...friendship with the world is enmity with God...if any of this is the case then you are free to leave because we are not to be unequally yoked..read Gods word on the subject in context, compare scripture to scripture, seek His will first and firstly and most importantly honour and glorify God in your life before all others...pray that God will lead you and help you through this very very difficult time and pray for your wife and children...you are the leader of the household and you are directly answerable to God and all your household needs to be in submission to you in love as you love them as Christ loved the church..if they are failing to comply then you need to pray about that and ask for God to lead you and guide you into correcting that situation...

Dear friend,

Your situation saddens me deeply because, on the surface, it appears not to have been of your own making, but more on that later. As people have pointed out, the situation is really beyond your control. I believe that you need to pray these very familiar words, "not my will but Yours be done', and mean it in your heart. Only God can determine the ultimate outcome of this relationship; all you can do is trust that He will work things out for the good of all concerned.

I would have 2 practical suggestions. #1 - If you do ultimately split up, forgive your wife. You have pointed out ample reasons why she is the way she is. No matter the outcome of your current problems, you need to forgive her and move on with your life. Any bitterness or resentment that you harbor will only serve to poisin you, and will give Satan a great opportunity to drive a wedge between you and God.

#2 - Treat your children with love and respect. And by that I mean tell them the truth in love. They are old enough to understand the situation, and glossing over it will not do them any favors. Explain your position to them in a non-judgmental manner that does not cast aspersion on your wife. Show them that you love them deeply and want the best for them, and it probably wouldn't be a bad time to reinforce to them that they have a heavenly Father who will always be available; even when you are not.

Now. That said, I would also suggest that you possibly consider getting into counseling yourself; not seeing a counselor, being a counselor. You have learned from sad experience that all the fears and doubts you had going into your relationship have come to fruition. In his second letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle, Paul, warned us, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?" (2 Corinthians 6: 14-15) I don't know your personal circumstances, but if you could stop just one other person from making the same mistake you did, that would be bearing some awesome Godly fruit.

God be with you in your struggle.

so sorry for what you are going through, seems like my situation but reveresed, ultimately its your decision...seems like u need a (((((((((((((((( great big hug))))))))))))))) and prayers.
blessings teresa

Dear Wagon,
I think this says it all ". My wife says she is a Christian ... but she often does not live like it unless it is an issue she can use to benefit herself. " This is not the Holy Spirit fruits of a true Christian and follower of Jesus Christ. I do believe every issue you have so openly and painfully shared with us, points to this fact.
Remember when Jesus cursed the fig tree. I was "acting like a tree and should have had fruit"..but it had nothing..and so was cursed. Many of the issues that haunt your relationship has roots from the past. They can be dealt with, but only through Christ and not apart from him.
Since you have made the decision to seperate and/or divorce that move should be quite telling for you. Regardless, I pray it wiill be a move toward a new season for you.
God be with you.

My prayers are with you and your family. Your testimony is heartbreaking and I truly empathize with you. I believe that one of the roots of your difficulties is the Generational Curse that is following your wife; one that will ultimately follow your children and grandchildren if changes are not made. It appears to me that your wife did not experience affection in the household, at least not between her parents. She may not even realize that she is demonstrating the same behaviors that she experienced as a child.

Does your wife have friends or other relatives that have households that readily display affection and genuinely care about one another? I only ask, because we often need examples or role models to help develop our characters. Now don't get me wrong, Jesus is the absolute best role model, but if she is not really following Jesus and his teachings, then she would more than likely overlook his example and lessons.

As far as divorce, I have a question for you: What do you hope to gain from divorce?

If it is love; Look to Jesus. If it is peace of mind; Look to Jesus. I think that your answer lies within you and most definitely within the Word. It has already been said in at least one other post that the only one that you can change is you. Before seeking a divorce, seek to strengthen your relationship with Christ, fellowship with other believers, be the man that your sons need to see. Study the Word with them. Do everything that you can to break the Generational Curse that they are bound to inherit. I realize that this is the ultimate sacrifice for you, but helping to lay a better foundation for them will result in much love, peace and joy for you as you guide them into manhood and prayerfully loving relationships.

You may even go as far as romancing your wife, you will need a thick skin for this because she may not respond the way that you want. The beauty of this is that you will feel better, just giving out or displaying love. Who knows, she may eventually learn to appreciate these little gestures. Be Blessed!

Agreeing in prayer...with the post above.
May God give you wisdom and understanding too!
Love in Jesus, Shekaniah

I'm going to hit on only one thing here: Do you think perhaps part of the relationship problem is the fact that you paoint out her flaws before you point out what is good about the woman. You immediatly start questioning her faith, saying she only is using it when it helps her. Please, watch the movie Fireproof. Try it.

I agree, watch the movie Fireproof.

Also, I know a Christian married couple and was surprised to find out that they were separated for about a year. Then someone told them about this book The Five Love Languages. They both went through it and it saved their marriage, and now it's better than ever! It's a Christian book about how to best love each other and understand each other. It's renowned even on a secular level.

The Five Love Languages.

I'm praying for you people but you should remember that this is just some of the problems in marriage and these problems are been caused by the devil, so don't allow the devil to destroy your marriage. Commit it to the LORD and you will overcome this problem. I'm very sure that when you overcome this problem you will see that the devil was trying to destroy your happiness. May the Holy Spirit be with you and your wife and give you people the strength and wisdom to overcome this.
