Thanks, Celeste, for beating me to the punchActually Jimmy, many of the elections of the 19th century were worse for the name calling as this one, the main difference was that they did not have the visual medium like Television to broadcast their political tripe. The election of 1800 was one of America's earliest and candidates did not even dare to run directly for office back then it was thought to be far too socially forward. Some of the elections of the 1850's and 1860's were horrible given the editorial cartoons were amazing in their insulting and derogatory content.
Sense when has our country been a country of only two political parties? Yes, the Democrats and Republicans have been the major parties, so much so, that the others have a hard time revealing themselves. But, we have always had at least three parties in our country for at least the last 100 years. If you are not aware, we do have the Constitution Party, the Libertarians, and the Green party. There are probably a few others I'm unaware of, but there are at least 5 parties at this time nationwide in our country.

That may be but when it comes to presidential races only two parties matter
Don't forget the "grass roots" party![]()
That's because we have been trained to think that way. Not to mention that the other parties tend not to have all the money that the Republicans and Democrats have. If the independents really wanted to, they could strike fear into both the Democrats and Republicans, by voting for a third party.
When a 3rd party runs for president, the outcome is that it splits the vote of its end of the spectrum.
Ross Perot was relatively conservative. When he ran, it split the Republican vote, and the Democrat won.
Ralph Nader was relatively liberal. When he ran, it split the Democratic vote, and the Republican won.
Whether or not this is "fair" or "wise" or "the way it should be," this is the way it IS. You can cry and moan and hold your breath until you're blue in the face, that's not going to stop it from being true.
Simply having additional parties is not enough to break the practical 2-party system that exists in this country. We need a total upheaval, and I honestly don't know what it would take to undo what has been done. I think both current parties (D and R) need to go away, and the electoral college needs to go away.
3rd parties occasionally win in congress. Perhaps having a president elected or selected from among the congressional leaders would be one solution.
