12.5 Million a month! cost to tax payers.... hummmm

observers complain that the program suffers from poor oversight, in which phones go to people who don’t qualify, and hundreds of thousands of those who do qualify have more than one phone.

Last year, a federal program paid out $1.6 billion to cover free cell phones and the monthly bills of 12.5 million wireless accounts

I think these phones need to be eliminated and instead use that money to help elderly people pay for their medical expenses or utility bills. Help those who can not help themselves.

OFM it is more like 2.1 Billion a year cost to taxpayers.
I am not sure exact amount, but 12.5 million seems rather low. I bet goverment spends more than that on toilet paper.:D with the poop flying around....

So I ed jew-ma-cated(educated) myself on the internet and looked it up.

Spending Off the Hook: Free Phones Costing Taxpayers $2.1 Billion Per Year

I wonder...where does all the money come from to pay for all this stuff?

Every public assistance program has issues with fraud, corruption, and waste. Using that money to try and benefit elderly people wouldn't be any better.

OFM Have you got yours yet? I am still waiting on mine to show up at my door step...hehe

Honestly if we can give over 700 billion to rebuild in other nations, we can afford a billion or two to buy our own people phones so they can have a sense of security.

yes I agree, I think the free phone was originally intended and offered to elderly because Life Alert is the alert button that calls for help when someone one falls and needs help needed to have a phone line in order to function. Intended for Medical or Emergency reasons. Of course what was a good idea has been taken advantage of once again, and we are all at a lose now. (my opinion)

The Bible tells us we (each person) are/is responsible to care for their aging parents and those in our family that can not help themselves, if this is not possible the Church should step in. To expect a corrupt govement to be honest in taking money to help others is like saying the easter bunny really lays chocolate eggs.

This views are my views and not from internet.:D

As long as there are humans walking on this fallen corrupted earth there will be corruption in stuff. For some stuff the government is the best remedy for helping the poor. It's not perfect, but for some situations it is the best remedy.
