I will say that Obama is not as far Left fiscally despite his rhetoric. But Obama is most certainly the farthest Left candidate socially that we've seen.
So you are drawing a distinction between economic policies and social policies? Do I understand you correctly?
You are saying that his economic platform may or may not be particularly "right" or "left" or "center," but his social policies are left to an extreme?
If I am understanding you correctly, I think I can see where you're going. No other president has ever even suggested that homosexuals could serve openly in the military, and Obama lifted DADT.
No other president would ever admit to using drugs. Clinton came close with his, "but I didn't inhale" line. And here's Obama, openly admitting that he has used controlled substances.
I don't think that's a matter of Obama being particularly liberal. I think that falls under the category of, "in time, the liberals always win."
Allow me to demonstrate:
A few hundred years ago, it was "common knowledge" in the western world that white people were simply superior to blacks and asians. God gave us dominion over other races, as evidenced by our advanced technology, and it was our right and responsibility to govern the less capable races. This was just accepted as fact, unquestioned.
And then some people started questioning. Is intelligence or fitness to govern really a factor of melanin, or lack thereof? At first, these people were radical. "That's crazy talk," they were told. But they persisted. And in time, they were proved right. Now, it's only extremists on the other side who think that race has anything to do with intelligence.
And a few decades ago, it was just universally accepted that women were incapable of most tasks outside the menial labor set aside from them. A woman certainly would never be able to figure out math or science on a level that would allow her to pursue a career in those subjects, her mind just wasn't up to the task. Everyone knows girls aren't good at that sort of thing.
And then a few people challenged that. They were called communists, radicals, destroyers of families. We can't let women work outside the home, it will end civilization as we know it.
But they did. And they were good at it. And now some of our greatest scientists are women. Women are responsible for some amazing inventions and life-saving technologies. Far from destroying the world, they have improved the standard of living significantly.
Given time, the liberals always win.
So, when you tell me that President Obama's acceptance of homosexuality strikes you as being "overly liberal," I sit back and smile, because I know in time, people will look back at this period of history, and wonder why people were so upset by gays getting married, and what the big deal was, anyway.
Given time, the liberals always win.
